TRAILER

The vacation island of Hiddensee in the Baltic Sea was and is a legendary place of longing and a synonym for freedom for many. Whether artists, punks, celebrities, nudists, or sunbathers – for decades, people have flocked to the mere 17 km long strip of land. In her documentary, Annekatrin Hendel explores the island's history over the last 100 years. As early as the glittering 1920s, Hiddensee was considered a refuge for the intellectual avant-garde, such as Nobel laureate in literature Gerhart Hauptmann or silent film star Asta Nielsen. To this day, Hiddensee is also the scene of many political conflicts that play out in the rest of the nation – Germany in miniature, so to speak.
Annekatrin Hendel's black-and-white documentary was awarded "Best Feature Documentary" at the Sweden Film Awards.

"Hiddensee" is a quiet declaration of love to the small Baltic Sea island, but at the same time more than that.
