War Grandchildren and Their Mothers: Love, Anger, and Stomach Aches
War grandchildren (born approx. 1945-1975) often experienced a mother who was characterized by great fear of life and an enormous need for security. As children, they were left alone with their emotional wounds during and after the war and learned to keep their feelings under wraps. These traumatized war children were later unable to provide emotional care for their own children, even if they could provide materially. They lacked a sense of self and could hardly allow real closeness. Thus, they remained distant and alien to their children. But they blamed themselves and felt responsible when their mother was unwell, and this continues to this day. At the same time, they repeatedly experienced devaluation by their mother and her unpredictable anger. But the inability to save their mother gnaws at the self-esteem of even the adult children. And this has repercussions in all areas of life.
