Athens Pride

Athens Pride is the organisational force behind Greece's largest LGBTQ+ event and one of the most significant Pride events in southeastern Europe. The annual Pride march and festival, held in June at and around Syntagma Square — the central square of Athens that faces the Parliament building — draws in excess of 150,000 people and has grown in both scale and political weight in recent years. The symbolism of the location is deliberate: holding the largest LGBTQ+ gathering in the region directly in front of the Greek Parliament in the years when that Parliament was debating and passing marriage equality legislation gave Athens Pride a political dimension that pure entertainment events lack. The organisation also runs year-round programming including community events, film screenings, discussions, and advocacy work. For gay travellers visiting Athens in June, the Pride week is the obvious focal point of the visit, offering a combination of political statement, community celebration, and — particularly in the evening events — excellent nightlife.
