Step off the train at Centraal, cross the water, and within five minutes you are on the Warmoesstraat: a narrow medieval street of hostels, coffeeshops and shuttered doorways, with the Oude Kerk's bells above and the leather bars quietly getting ready for midnight. Amsterdam has been a cruising city for generations, and it still is, but the scene is smaller than its reputation. AT5 reported in 2025 that of 29 darkroom venues counted since the 1990s, only nine of those addresses were still in use, with 11 darkrooms in the city in all. What remains is compact and easy to reach: a handful of leather and cruise bars around the Warmoesstraat and the Nieuwezijds Kolk, a big cruise club on the Kerkstraat, one gay sauna, a few cinemas with cabins, and the Vondelpark, where night-time sex has been officially tolerated, not legalised, since 2008.
Legal in one line: the Netherlands opened civil marriage to same-sex couples in 2001 and gay life in Amsterdam is open and legal, but sex in public is not: under Article 239 of the Dutch Criminal Code (schennis van de eerbaarheid, offending public decency), indecent acts in a place open to the public can bring up to three months in prison or a fine. Indoors, in licensed venues, you are on safe ground.
How the scene works
Amsterdam treats the darkroom as a planning matter. In 2015 the city became, according to AT5, the first Dutch municipality to define the darkroom in its zoning plan; venues now need a darkroom permit or fall under sex shop or sex cinema zoning. That makes new openings rare. When AT5 looked in May 2025, it found 11 darkrooms in the city, drawing on a list kept by Richard Keldoulis, who runs one of them: Amsterdam Gay Shop, B1 (then under renovation), Bears Amsterdam, Club Church, the Cuckoo's Nest, Dirty Dicks, Drake's, Sauna NZ, Spijker, the Eagle and William Higgins' le Salon. Keldoulis put the long decline down to changing nightlife habits, dating apps among them.
Most venues are closed early in the week. Homohoreca, the long-running Dutch gay hospitality register, notes that many are shut from Monday to Wednesday, and lists all hours as subject to change. Check each venue's website or socials on the day.
The Warmoesstraat: leather and fetish
The Warmoesstraat once had a dozen or more darkrooms, according to AT5. Two gay cruise venues are left on the street itself, next door to each other.

Eagle Amsterdam
Eagle Amsterdam (Warmoesstraat 90) dates from 4 October 1979 and moved to this address from no. 86 in 1994, according to Homohoreca. It is a men-only leather, denim and cruise bar on three floors; Travel Gay describes a dance floor, smoking room, lounge, a cruising area upstairs and a darkroom in the basement. Expect dark music and a crowd that builds after midnight. In November 2026 Nighttours listed it from 22:00 to 04:00 on Thursdays and 22:00 to 05:00 on Fridays; it is generally closed Monday to Wednesday.
Dirty Dicks
Dirty Dicks (Warmoesstraat 86) has been at this address since June 1994, according to Homohoreca, and is described by Cruising Amsterdam as a fetish and denim bar. It is men only, on two floors, with a bar, darkroom, maze, cabins, a smokers' lounge and a play zone, and hosts weekly theme parties. Nighttours mentions a fetish dress code; Travel Gay says you ring the bell to get in and that condoms, lube and gloves are free. Homohoreca listed it from 20:00, until 03:00 on weekdays and 04:00 at weekends, as of October 2025. It is busiest on weekend nights.
Around the Nieuwezijds Kolk
West of the Damrak, a few minutes from the Warmoesstraat, two long-standing bars open in the afternoon: useful if you are leaving on an evening flight.
The Cuckoo's Nest
The Cuckoo's Nest (Nieuwezijds Kolk 6) opened in November 1984 as a leather bar, according to Homohoreca. There is a bar on the ground floor and, as Travel Gay describes it, a large basement play area with a maze and private cabins; AT5 counted it among the city's darkrooms in 2025. Homohoreca listed it from 13:00, until 01:00 on weekdays and 02:00 at weekends, as of May 2025. Things get going in the early afternoon.
Bears Amsterdam (formerly The Web)
Bears Amsterdam (Sint Jacobsstraat 6) took over the premises of The Web, a leather and cruise bar from the mid-1980s, and has been open since 10 May 2025, according to Homohoreca. Nighttours describes it as a bar for bears and their admirers. The Web was known for its large upstairs darkroom; AT5 still included Bears Amsterdam in its 2025 darkroom list, but the play area may have changed, so check before you go. Homohoreca listed it from 13:00 to 02:00 at weekends and 18:00 to midnight on weekdays.
The Kerkstraat: Club Church and Spijker
Club Church
Club Church (Kerkstraat 52) is a dance and cruise club that has been running since 2008, according to Cruising Amsterdam. Travel Gay describes a large bar, a dance floor, private cabins, slings, showers and a free cloakroom, with themed nights such as underwear, naked, drag and sports; Nighttours mentions a weekly underwear night and dress codes that change from party to party. It also hosts fetish parties such as xxxleather, whose dress code, misterb&b says, is leather, rubber, uniform, skin or sportswear. Travel Gay listed it, as of 2024, as closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, with late opening until 05:00 on Fridays and Saturdays and a Sunday afternoon session. Check the party calendar on its website: the theme decides the dress code and often the crowd.
Spijker
Spijker (Kerkstraat 4) is a bar from 1979, originally a leather bar, now described as a queer and gay bar. It is mostly a social bar with a mixed crowd, but AT5 counted a darkroom here in 2025.
Cinemas and shops with cabins
Drake's
Drake's (Damrak 61), about five minutes' walk from Centraal, is a gay shop with a cinema and cruising area behind it. Travel Gay describes cabins with video screens, glory holes and a small darkroom, with entry through the shop. As listed in 2024, it opened daily from 12:00 to 19:00, with a day pass at €13 and free entry for men under 26 with photo ID; check current prices at the door. AT5 included it in its 2025 darkroom list.
Other cabins and fetish shops
AT5's 2025 list also includes Amsterdam Gay Shop, William Higgins' le Salon and B1, which was being renovated at the time; AT5 noted that three of the 11 darkrooms operate under sex shop or sex cinema zoning rather than a darkroom permit. Check status and opening times before you go. For gear rather than action, RoB (Warmoesstraat 71) is a leather and fetish shop; Nighttours lists it Monday to Saturday 11:00 to 19:00 and Sunday 13:00 to 18:00.
The sauna
Amsterdam has one gay sauna left. Sauna Nieuwezijds, also called Sauna NZ (Nieuwezijds Armsteeg 95), opened on 6 December 2013, according to Homohoreca, and is a short walk from Centraal. misterb&b describes a steam room laid out as a maze, ten large and four smaller private cabins, a glass smoking room, a sling room and a TV room, with free condoms and lube, and says it is open around the clock at weekends. Homohoreca lists weekdays from 12:00 to 02:00. For more detail, see our Amsterdam gay saunas guide.
Closed or changed:
- The Web (Sint Jacobsstraat 6) became Bears Amsterdam in May 2025.
- Free Willie, the naked bar for men on the Amstel, is listed as permanently closed.
- Long-gone names such as Argos, The Cockring, the Adonis cinema and the Thermos and Boomerang saunas all closed in the mid-2010s or earlier.
- Entry and dress codes: most bars are free to enter; clubs and parties charge at the door, and Drake's and the sauna sell day passes. Dress codes are taken seriously on fetish nights at Dirty Dicks and Club Church: check the night's theme online, and use the cloakroom or locker rather than carrying your clothes.
- Phones and valuables: leave your phone in a locker in play areas, and never photograph or film other guests.
- Consent: a hand pushed away or a step back means no. Respect it, and expect the same in return. Staff will remove people who don't.
- Cards: the Netherlands is close to cashless. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, and some places don't take cash at all.
- Getting home: when the trams and metro stop for the night, GVB runs night buses. NS night trains (Nachtnet) run roughly once an hour every night between Utrecht, Amsterdam Centraal, Schiphol, Leiden, The Hague and Rotterdam, with extra weekend night trains to Haarlem, Alkmaar and Amersfoort. Check times in the GVB or NS app before you go out.
- Bikes: bike theft is common in Amsterdam. Use two locks, lock the frame to something fixed, and don't leave a hire bike outside a bar overnight. Cycling drunk is an offence.
- PrEP and PEP: GGD Amsterdam runs a sexual health centre with a PrEP programme, though AT5 reported long waiting lists in 2023. If you think you've been exposed to HIV, start PEP as soon as possible: Sense, the national sexual health service, says preferably within two hours and no later than 72 hours. During office hours go to the GGD; outside office hours, go to the emergency department of a larger hospital.
- Apps: Grindr and Romeo are widely used. Meet new contacts in a bar first, and tell a friend where you are going.
- Homo – gay man. Homobar or homocafé – gay bar.
- Darkroom – the same word in Dutch.
- Toestemming – consent. Nee – no. Stop – stop.
- Kluisje – locker. Handdoek – towel. Garderobe – cloakroom.
- Gedogen – to tolerate something that stays technically illegal.
- Fiets – bike. Slot – lock.
- Pinnen – to pay by card. Alleen pinnen – card only.
- Proost! – cheers. Dank je wel – thank you.
- Schennis van de eerbaarheid – the legal term for offending public decency.
Parties and Leather Pride
Much of the action now happens at parties rather than in fixed venues. Club Church hosts regular fetish and theme nights. Amsterdam Leather & Fetish Pride is the city's annual leather weekend; Gaytravel4u lists its men-only party Invasion and the Friday night Meltdown at IJLand in Amsterdam-Noord, with the Mr Leather Netherlands election and community events at the Eagle, Dirty Dicks, the Cuckoo's Nest and Bears Amsterdam. Dates for the next edition had not been announced when we checked; see leatherpride.nl.
Outdoors: the Vondelpark
The Vondelpark, the city's big park on the edge of the Oud-Zuid, has a long-standing outdoor gay meeting place: the wooded area next to the Rosarium, the rose garden. The local paper Nieuw Amsterdams Peil called it the best-known gay meeting place in the country in 2009, and wrote that men have met there since the rose garden was rebuilt in 1959.
In March 2008 Paul van Grieken, alderman of what was then the Oud-Zuid district, announced a draft policy on the use of the park that would tolerate sex there. As reported at the time, the conditions were that it was limited to the evening and night, never near children's playgrounds, that rubbish was cleared away, and that it did not bother other people. Some media reported it as sex in the park becoming "legal". It did not: this is gedogen, the Dutch practice of tolerating something that remains technically illegal. In 2017 the then police chief, Bernard Welten, asked people to stay discreet and not to have sex where people were walking their dogs, and said police would act on reports from witnesses. We found no recent official restatement of the policy. Going there is not a legal right: it is tolerance that can be withdrawn at any time, and it does not protect you from a fine.
The law and your safety. Article 239 of the Dutch Criminal Code makes indecent acts punishable when they happen in a place meant for public traffic, in another public place open to under-16s, or anywhere someone else is present against their will; the maximum is three months in prison or a fine. Amsterdam's local bylaw (APV) adds its own rules, and police or municipal enforcement officers can fine you or move you on. The 2008 tolerance only ever covered the night, and only away from other park users and playgrounds. The Vondelpark is busy with joggers, cyclists, dog walkers and families by day, and after dark it is large, dark and quiet. Robbery is a real risk. In February 2026 the city declared the park and the streets around it a nuisance area (overlastgebied), citing drug dealing, street robberies, fights and assaults, which lets police order people out of the area for 24 hours. In 2013 a man was stabbed in the rose garden at about 2am in what police called a deliberate attack. Take as little as possible (phone, one card, house key), tell a friend where you are, leave if anyone else is around, and walk away from anyone who makes you uneasy. If something goes wrong, call 112 in an emergency or 0900-8844 for the police non-emergency line.
Local colour
The Warmoesstraat is the city's oldest street, and the leather bars share it with the Oude Kerk, Amsterdam's oldest building, whose bells ring out over the Warmoesstraat between sets. Before a night out, eat like a local: a paper cone of Dutch fries (patat) with a dollop of mayonnaise, a hot kroket pulled from the wall at a FEBO, or a plate of bitterballen with a biertje in a brown café. Nights start late: the Eagle barely fills before midnight, while the Cuckoo's Nest and Bears Amsterdam open in the afternoon. On a Sunday morning the city is quiet, the trams run near-empty along the Damrak, and a warm stroopwafel, made fresh at a market stall, is the cure.
Practical tips
WorldPride Amsterdam 2026
In 2026 Amsterdam hosted WorldPride, from 25 July to 8 August. The Canal Parade sailed on Saturday 1 August from 12:00 to 18:00, along the Oosterdok, Nieuwe Herengracht, Amstel, Prinsengracht and Westerdok, and passed a temporary WorldPride Stadium on the Prinsengracht, between the Leidsestraat and the Spiegelgracht. A Human Rights Conference was held at the Beurs van Berlage from 5 to 7 August, and the festival closed on 8 August with the WorldPride March from Martin Luther King Park to the Museumplein and a closing concert there. Pride Amsterdam usually returns in late July and early August; the 2027 dates had not been announced when we checked, so see pride.amsterdam.

Frequently asked questions
Where are the gay cruise bars in Amsterdam?
Most are in the old centre, within a few minutes' walk of Centraal Station. The Eagle and Dirty Dicks sit side by side on the Warmoesstraat, the Cuckoo's Nest is on the Nieuwezijds Kolk and Bears Amsterdam on the Sint Jacobsstraat, while Club Church and Spijker are on the Kerkstraat in the canal belt.
Is there still a gay sauna in Amsterdam?
Yes, one: Sauna Nieuwezijds, on the Nieuwezijds Armsteeg near Centraal Station, open since 2013. The older Thermos and Boomerang saunas have closed.
Is sex in the Vondelpark legal?
No. Since 2008 night-time sex there has been tolerated, not legalised, and Article 239 of the Dutch Criminal Code still applies. It is not a right, and the park has a record of robberies and assaults after dark, so keep valuables to a minimum or stick to the indoor venues.
What happened to The Web in Amsterdam?
The Web, the leather and cruise bar on the Sint Jacobsstraat, was turned into Bears Amsterdam, a bar for bears and their admirers, which has been open since 10 May 2025. AT5 still counted it among the city's darkroom venues in 2025.
When was WorldPride Amsterdam 2026?
WorldPride Amsterdam ran from 25 July to 8 August 2026. The boats of the Canal Parade took to the water on Saturday 1 August, and the festival ended with a march to the Museumplein on 8 August.
