A spiritual performance about the transformation from vulnerable child to outspoken black queer personality.
About the event
A playing field of gender f*ck, the feminine Videovixen, the masculine rapper, the HipHopHead with a Black Panther mindset, in the form of a pop concert. At a time when being queer is under pressure worldwide, performer and maker Cherella Gessel (she/he/they) uses the body as a vessel for memory, healing, and resistance.
KENKI KRIN KRIN – transformation to sincerity in Sranantongo – follows the path of emotional suppression of a vulnerable child to a powerful, outspoken Black queer personality. An associative journey in which the boundaries between the traditional and the contemporary, the spiritual and the earthly blur. We see a person claiming their place in life, community, and the arts.
The performance is an ode to Senegal, Suriname, Salvador, New York, and Curaçao and their communities. A performance infused with Afro-spirituality, Afro Contemporary Dance, rap, Spoken Word, and pole dancing.
KENKI KRIN KRIN is an invitation to a collective ritual.
