About this place Praia do Furadouro (Norte)

Porto has no gay or nude beach of its own, and the 'Praia do Homem Nu' that people search for near Aguda or Miramar does not exist there (the real one is in Tavira, in the Algarve). The nearest beach with a genuine naturist sector and a listing in the Portuguese gay guides is Praia do Furadouro in Ovar, about 40 km south of the city. Portuguese beach guides describe the northern part of the beach as habitually naturist, and PortugalGay.pt lists 'Praia do Furadouro (Norte)' under Ovar as a user-submitted gay beach, with the site's own caveat that it does not guarantee current frequency or safety. What to expect: a long, wide Atlantic beach backed by dunes and a boardwalk. The lifeguarded, textile family stretch is in front of the village; walk north past the last lifeguard post and the beach empties out, and this is the zone where naturists and gay men sunbathe, roughly from late May to September on warm days. The sea is cold and rough with strong currents, so this is a sunbathing and socialising beach, not a swimming one. There are no facilities in the north sector; cafés, toilets and showers are in the village. Getting there: by car on the A29 (about 40 minutes), or Comboios de Portugal regional train from Porto Campanhã or São Bento to Ovar (around 35-45 minutes), then the 4 km cycle path or a taxi to the beach. Rules: bring water and sunscreen, respect the dunes and the fenced vegetation, and keep any activity out of sight of the boardwalk and the family stretch; public sex is an offence in Portugal. Treat the listing as a lead rather than a guarantee and report what you find.
