No — same-sex marriage is not currently recognised in Slovakia. Slovakia decriminalised same-sex relations in 1962 and the 2004 Anti-Discrimination Act, broadened in 2008, covers sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, education and services, with hate crime provisions added in 2013. The constitution has defined marriage as a union of a man and a woman since 2014, parliament has rejected civil union bills six times, and only married couples may adopt. The country has turned sharply against trans people: after a chaotic 2022-2023 in which the health ministry issued and revoked transition standards twice, a 2025 constitutional amendment recognised only two sexes, effectively ending legal gender change, and also restricted adoption. The October 2022 shooting outside the Tepláreň bar in Bratislava, which killed two young men, remains the defining event for the community; support for civil unions rose to about 40 percent afterwards and has stayed there. Bratislava Pride has marched since 2010, the first year attacked, since then peacefully. Bratislava has a small scene; Košice less. Visitors are safe and rarely bothered.
