Fat Freddy’s Drop

Fat Freddy’s Drop is a New Zealand band with a captivating live performance that balances sophistication and fun, turning their concerts into what could be described as elegant explosions of euphoria. They formed in 1999, emerging from the underground dance music scene in Wellington, although it was primarily after their participation in the 2006 Detroit Movement Festival, where they presented their acclaimed debut LP, “Based On A True Story”, that their international echo exploded. They broke down doors with a sound cocktail they call “hi-tek soul” and which makes them a modern reggae band open to incorporating soul and dub. Although those looking for doses of what we could call organic techno, jazz-funk, rhythm’n’blues, or rock in their songs will also find them. We mentioned “Based On A True Story”, the album that will be the focus of their September concerts and the one that catapulted them beyond their country: just as it went gold there and was the first independent LP to reach #1 on the charts, in the UK Gilles Peterson chose it as Album Of The Year on his “Worldwide” show on BBC.
Since then, they have released nine more albums: “Dr. Boondiga And The Big BW” (2009), “Blackbird” (2013), “Bays” (2015), “Special Edition Part. 1” (2019), “Flashback (The Electric Drop)” (2019, this with DJ Vadim), “Lock-In” (2020), “Wairunga” (2021), “Blackbrid Returns” (2023), and “SLO MO” (2024).
