Lovely little pub with great staff and entertainment

Having visited The Jolly Farmers since 1995, I can wholeheartedly say it is an absolute gem and one of the finest venues in Oxford. I first walked through the doors having only just come out, and the welcome I received was unforgettable. I was instantly befriended, offered invaluable advice, and felt profoundly supported by my community. Over the decades, I have made friends for life here, and the true magic of the pub is that I continue to make new ones as it unfailingly welcomes fresh faces into the fold. As one of the UK’s longest-running LGBTQIA+ pubs, it holds a remarkable place in the city's history and serves as a vital, vibrant hub. The atmosphere remains incredibly accepting, comfortable, and unfailingly friendly—a true safe haven where everyone can be exactly who they are and feel completely at home. The staff consistently go above and beyond, providing a remarkably warm welcome that makes every visit a joy. The pub itself is a beautiful, quirky old building with a rich history, and the interior is wonderfully decorated with rainbow accents and LGBTQIA+ memorabilia. It is full of delightful quirks and nods to local literary connections, ranging from Sherlock to Lyra and Philip Pullman; there is even a snug dedicated to His Dark Materials. Downstairs you will find the brilliantly named 'Shadow Gallery'—a subtle nod to the secret sanctuary in *V for Vendetta* that feels perfectly fitting for a space that champions being yourself. The vibe is genuinely relaxed, bolstered by a wonderful community noticeboard as well as thoughtfully provided, discreet complimentary health and wellbeing resources. It is a fantastic spot to snuggle down by the open fire in a winged armchair and read a book from their eclectic library, or grab something from their great stock of board games to play. When the weather is fine, their extended, heated garden terrace is a brilliant place to gather with friends. What truly makes this place stand out is how it brings people together, particularly during celebrations. Being at the heart of Oxford Pride is what has always made the event so incredibly special. Oxford Pride is unique in its wonderful "village vibe", offering distinct and welcoming spaces for people to enjoy across the Castle, Paradise Square, the Westgate, and right outside the pub's doors on Paradise Street. Throughout the rest of the year, their lively events programme guarantees a fantastic, fun time. The drag acts are absolutely incredible and so much fun, whilst the regular quiz nights and events like the Queer Boardgamers club are a great way of meeting new people. They also offer an excellent selection of local ales. Whilst they don't have a kitchen, they have a wonderfully relaxed policy about food; you can easily pop over to the Westgate Oxford and the Westgate Social to grab a takeaway, and bring it right back to the pub to enjoy in a comfortable, welcoming space. Whilst it might not be like every other gay pub, its true strength lies in its fiercely inclusive attitude—bringing people together rather than pushing anyone away. It is undoubtedly this welcoming ethos that keeps it trading so successfully today. I am immensely proud to have supported this gentle, wonderful little pub for three decades. Whether you are a local or just visiting the city, I highly recommend popping in to experience its unique magic for yourself.

This pub has potential. However, it needs to remember it’s a gay pub. Play some louder music, play Madonna lady gaga Mariah Carey just play anything and turn the music up people are there to drink and have fun your missing a trick. Make it more fun!!!! Especially in the day time on a Saturday it’s not a wake it’s a gay pub supposedly!

It's the only pub I've ever been to with a low alcohol option on tap which pleased me greatly. I was offered a sample to try too which I thought was a nice touch. Based on my first experience here it seems to have a decently friendly and welcoming vibe too.
