Charleston is West Virginia's capital and largest city — a small Appalachian city on the Kanawha River with a surprisingly active LGBTQ+ community for its size and location. West Virginia's isolation has historically created a live-and-let-live culture that coexists uneasily with its political conservatism.
LGBTQ+ Venues
- The Stonewall Bar — Charleston's main gay venue; drag shows, dancing, and a welcoming community atmosphere. Named after the Stonewall Inn and a genuine community anchor.
- Adam's Apple — neighbourhood gay bar; relaxed and local in character.
Community
PFLAG Charleston has an active chapter. Charleston Pride is held annually in summer — a community event reflecting the determined presence of an LGBTQ+ community in challenging political circumstances. The University of Charleston and West Virginia State University contribute student presence to the community.
Outdoor West Virginia
New River Gorge National Park (1 hour south) became a national park in 2020 — world-class whitewater, rock climbing, and hiking. The Greenbrier resort (1.5 hours east) has a long history of welcoming gay guests. Seneca Rocks and Blackwater Falls State Park are other outdoor highlights. West Virginia's natural landscape is genuinely spectacular.
