Cape Town's gay bar and club scene is concentrated in De Waterkant — a compact, walkable district of converted Cape Dutch townhouses near the V&A Waterfront. It's small by international standards but genuinely vibrant, especially during Pride and around the Mother City Queer Project.
De Waterkant — The Gay Quarter
The De Waterkant area around Somerset Road and the streets running off it is where most of Cape Town's gay venues concentrate. A 10-minute taxi ride from central Cape Town, and walkable once you're in the area.
- Crew Bar (De Waterkant) — the main gay social bar; lively atmosphere, outdoor area, themed events. Consistently busy on weekends and during Pride season. The rooftop offers city views.
- Zer021 (30 Chiappini Street, CBD) — chic bar in the CBD with good music and cocktails; slightly more upscale crowd.
- Beefcakes — known for drag shows and dining; the most theatrical option in Cape Town, where the entertainment is part of the point.
- The Piano Bar (De Waterkant) — live music and cocktails; more relaxed and conversation-oriented than the clubs.
- Bar Code — leather and fetish-leaning bar; different clientele from the mainstream venues.
- Café Manhattan — longstanding De Waterkant bar popular with a mixed crowd.
Major Events
- Cape Town Pride (February–March) — three weeks of events including the Dignity March along Somerset Road; the venue scene fills up considerably
- Mother City Queer Project (MCQP) — December; annual costume and dance party, one of the largest gay events in Africa
- Cape Town Pride Parade — the march itself typically ends in Green Point, with after-parties in De Waterkant
Safety note:
Cape Town has a high crime rate. Use Uber for all transport between the venues and your accommodation — don't walk between areas at night. De Waterkant is relatively safe within the neighbourhood, but areas immediately outside it require more caution. South Africa has strong constitutional LGBTQ+ protections, but hate crimes do occur.
