San Francisco has a long bathhouse history — the venues that existed before the AIDS crisis were central to gay social life in the city. Today the scene is smaller but still active, concentrated in SoMa and the Castro.
Eros SF
The best-regarded option in the city — a two-level facility in the Castro running steam room, dry sauna, video lounge, private rooms, and maze sections. Caters to men of all ages and body types without any of the attitude you sometimes find in SF venues. Regular themed events. Entry includes towel.
Blow Buddies
A dedicated sex club rather than a traditional sauna — no steam room or wellness facilities, just dark rooms, glory holes, slings, and private cabins. Open 24 hours, lower price point, consistently popular with the SoMa crowd. One of the last of its kind in the city.
Oasis
More of a hybrid venue — sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, bar, and a performance/events space with regular LGBTQ+ programming. Good option for an evening that combines the social and the physical. The bar and stage area mean you can be there for a show as much as the facilities.
Steamworks Berkeley
Worth mentioning even though it's across the Bay Bridge — one of the best bathhouses in Northern California. Gym facilities, clean and well-maintained, open 24 hours, with student and military discounts. About 40 minutes from downtown SF by BART (Downtown Berkeley station, then a short walk).
The Broader Scene
SoMa is the leather and fetish district — SF Eagle (398 12th St), Powerhouse (1347 Folsom St), and Mr. S Leather are all in the same area as the saunas.
