Cape Town's gay sauna scene is small but solid — a handful of venues concentrated in De Waterkant and Green Point, the city's LGBTQ+ heartland. They get especially busy during Pride season (February–March) and around the Mother City Queer Project in December.
Hot House Steam & Leisure
The most established venue on the scene, running since the early 2000s. Four floors covering steam room, dry sauna, jacuzzi, private cabins, dark room, and a rooftop deck — plus a bar and café. Themed nights (underwear bashes, bear events) draw solid crowds, and during Pride it can get genuinely packed.
Steamworks Sauna
The boutique option — cleaner lines, quieter vibe, craft beer at the bar. Finnish sauna, Turkish steam room, jacuzzi, private rooms, dark maze, and massage services. The crowd skews a bit younger and more international than Hot House. Afternoons are relaxed; evenings get busier.
Shaft Cruise Zone
The rawer, warehouse-style alternative on Cobern Street — opened in 2021 and quickly found its crowd. Dry heat sauna, steam room, slings, glory setups, small jacuzzi, bar, and occasional DJ sets on big nights. After-party gatherings during MCQP and Pride keep it buzzing well past midnight.
The Apollo Spa
A calmer option in Sea Point, popular with the 40+ crowd who prefer classic spa aesthetics over dark-room-first environments. Dry sauna, steam room, jacuzzi with skylights, private cabins, massage services, and snacks. Film festival crowds gravitate here during Cape Town's cultural calendar.
When to Visit
- Cape Town Pride (February–March) — three weeks of events, marches, parties; saunas serve as post-event gathering spots
- Mother City Queer Project (MCQP) — December; the city's biggest costume party, after-parties run through the night
- Summer weekends (November–April) — Southern Hemisphere summer brings tourists and the city is at its liveliest
