Drizzle on the windscreen, the neon of Old Town reflecting off wet tarmac, and a queue of flannel shirts outside a bar on North Lombard Street: this is Portland after dark. The city is relaxed, liberal and proudly odd, but its cruising scene is small. In 2026 it comes down to one bathhouse on NE Sandy Boulevard, a leather-and-bear bar in North Portland, a couple of male strip clubs in the old Burnside Triangle, a clothing-optional river beach for summer, and the apps for everything else.
Legal in one line: sex between men has been legal in Oregon since the early 1970s and same-sex couples have been able to marry since 2014. Sex in public is not: public indecency under ORS 163.465 covers sexual acts in, or in view of, a public place and is a Class A misdemeanour, or a Class C felony for anyone with a previous conviction for it or for certain sex offences.
Steam Portland: the city's bathhouse
Steam Portland · 2885 NE Sandy Boulevard, Kerns
Steam Portland opened in 2003 on NE Sandy Boulevard in Kerns, in inner Northeast Portland, and it's the bathhouse that Portland's gay directories still list in 2026. Willamette Week has described it as "sleek". Facilities include a steam bath, a hot tub, a nude sun deck, a lounge and video booths; GayCities reviewers call it clean, spacious and modern. It was among the first Portland businesses to close temporarily when the pandemic hit in 2020.
Who gets in: Portland Monthly reported in 2024 that Steam admits trans men and non-binary people whose ID lists them as male or X. Bring photo ID; as at any US bathhouse, expect a membership or ID check at the desk.
Practicalities: we could not confirm current hours or prices, so check steamportland.com before you go. NE Sandy is a long diagonal artery with frequent buses into downtown.

Bars with a cruisy edge
Eagle Portland · 835 N Lombard Street, Piedmont
Eagle Portland is the city's bar for leathermen and bears, a bit out of the centre in North Portland, and the official home of the Oregon Bears. The Portland Mercury has described pool, a covered smoking patio and no-frills drinks, aimed at men who like their Tom of Finland; it suggested flannel and jeans if bears are your thing. Eater Portland called the staff friendly and the DJs usually good, adding that the regulars make newcomers feel at home even if it isn't a place for the very shy. OUTxOUT, updated in October 2026, lists it as a casual neighbourhood leather bar with themed nights; Travel Portland notes that it sometimes hosts lesbian nights. It's a bar, not a sex venue, but it's where Portland's leather crowd drinks. Bring photo ID.

Silverado · 610 NW Couch Street, Old Town
Silverado has been running for more than 35 years, according to OUTxOUT's 2026 round-up. Downstairs is a dance club with male dancers; upstairs is a quieter bar with food. It's a strip-club-style night out rather than a cruise bar, but it draws a men-heavy crowd, and it sits in the old Burnside Triangle, close to most of the downtown gay bars.
Stag PDX · 317 NW Broadway
Stag is an upscale all-nude male strip club with craft cocktails and a Sunday drag brunch, according to OUTxOUT. Same caveat: it's a show, not a play space, and normal strip-club rules (no touching unless invited, tip the dancers) apply.
Sanctuary Club · 33 NW 9th Avenue
OUTxOUT describes Sanctuary Club as a members-only club whose themed events mix nightlife with kink. Membership is required, and it is not a gay-only venue, so check its events calendar and rules before you plan a night there.
Closed: the old Eagle bar at 1300 W Burnside Street is closed; Eagle Portland on North Lombard is the bar to go to. Club Portland, the city's landmark downtown bathhouse, was reported by Willamette Week in 2007 to be closing.
Collins Beach, Sauvie Island: what to know
Collins Beach runs for about a mile along the Columbia River on Sauvie Island, a large, flat island of farms and wildlife reserve north-west of the city, reached by car over the Sauvie Island Bridge. The Sauvie Island Community Association says it has been popular for nude use since at least the 1970s, and the beach is signed as clothing-optional; the neighbouring Walton Beach is not. It's managed by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife with the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.
Rules: open daily from 4am to 10pm; no overnight use, camping or open fires; dogs on leads. On summer weekends and holidays from 15 June to Labor Day, cars need a Sauvie Island Beaches Parking Permit (listed at $10 a day), and vehicles without one are towed. There's no practical public transport, so plan on a car or a long bike ride.
The law: being naked on the clothing-optional stretch is allowed; sex is not. Under ORS 163.465, a person commits public indecency by having sexual intercourse, oral or anal sex, masturbating, or exposing their genitals to arouse sexual desire while in, or in view of, a public place. It's a Class A misdemeanour and becomes a Class C felony with a previous conviction for public indecency or certain sex crimes, with consequences that can follow you well beyond Oregon, including for visas and future travel.
Safety: the beach is used by families and nudists alike, and the woods behind it are part of a wildlife reserve. Leave nothing visible in your car, carry as little as possible, keep your phone charged, tell a friend where you are, and be off the island before the 10pm closing. In an emergency, call 911.
Local colour
Portland's gay history is centred on the Burnside Triangle, the few blocks of Old Town around West Burnside where the city's gay bars clustered for decades. Several survive: CC Slaughters on NW Davis Street has been open since 1981 and, after nearly closing in 2025 when its original owners retired, carried on under new owners, and Darcelle XV, the drag cabaret open since 1967, has been under a new owner since early 2025. The rest of the scene has spread east across the river, to neighbourhood bars on SE Belmont and NE Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard. Portland runs on coffee, craft beer and food carts, so fuel up before the night begins; the bars themselves are casual and nobody dresses up much, except at the Eagle, where leather is welcome.
Portland Pride
Portland Pride 2026, run by the non-profit Pride Northwest under the theme "Made with Pride", took place in July. The Waterfront Festival filled Tom McCall Waterfront Park on the Willamette on Saturday 18 July (noon to 8pm) and Sunday 19 July (11:30am to 6pm), with a suggested donation of $10 at the gate. The parade set off at 11am on Sunday 19 July from the North Park Blocks and ended at the waterfront. Pride is held in mid-July each year; 2027 dates had not been announced when we checked, so watch portlandpride.org.
Practical tips
- ID: every bar, club and the bathhouse will ask for photo ID; foreign visitors should carry a passport. The drinking age is 21.
- Phones and lockers: use the lockers at Steam and keep your phone out of sight in dark areas.
- Consent: in a bathhouse, a hand moved away means no. Ask, and respect the answer.
- Getting home: TriMet's MAX light rail and buses do not run all night, so check last departures on trimet.org before you go out, and use a rideshare or taxi for the trip home after late nights in Old Town or on North Lombard.
- PEP: PEP must start within 72 hours of exposure. When we checked, the Multnomah County STI Clinic (619 NW 6th Avenue, 2nd floor; 503-988-3700) said nPEP was temporarily unavailable there and told people to go to the nearest emergency room, so a hospital emergency department is the reliable option, day or night.
- PrEP, doxy PEP and testing: the county STI Clinic offers PrEP and doxy PEP free or at low cost, by appointment only (no walk-ins; Fridays are for testing only). No one is turned away for inability to pay, and no ID or insurance is required. Prism Health, at 2236 SE Belmont Street, opened in 2017 as Oregon's first LGBTQ primary care clinic and offers HIV and STI testing and a pharmacy.
- Chems: if GHB/GBL is around, never mix it with alcohol, never dose for someone else, and call 911 if someone won't wake up.
- Apps: Grindr and Sniffies are where most hook-ups start. Meet first in a bar or other public place and share your location with a friend.
- PDX – Portland, after its airport code.
- Stumptown – the city's old nickname.
- The Burnside Triangle – the historic gay bar district in Old Town.
- MAX – TriMet's light rail.
- Sauvie – Sauvie Island, home of Collins Beach.
- Bathhouse – the American word for a gay sauna.
