Rapid City is the gateway to the Black Hills — Mount Rushmore, Badlands National Park, and Custer State Park are all nearby. The LGBTQ+ scene is minimal by city standards, but a community exists and the surrounding landscape is worth the trip regardless.

- The Firehouse Brewing Co. — popular downtown brewpub in a converted firehouse; gay-friendly and welcoming to all crowds. One of Rapid City's best bars regardless of orientation.
- Tally's Silver Spoon — downtown restaurant and bar with a progressive, welcoming reputation.
Community
Black Hills Pride is held annually — a community event reflecting the LGBTQ+ presence in the region. South Dakota hasn't always been welcoming at the legislative level, but Rapid City's community exists and organises. The Sioux Falls area (3.5 hours east) has a more developed scene.
Worth Knowing
The Black Hills region draws visitors from across the northern plains in summer. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally (August, 30 minutes north of Rapid City) brings hundreds of thousands of people — Rapid City gets extremely busy during that week. Badlands National Park and Mount Rushmore are 30–45 minutes from downtown and genuinely spectacular.
