Cape Town is one of Africa's most LGBTQ+-friendly cities. De Waterkant is the historic gay quarter, and the surrounding beaches, parks and waterfronts each have their own character.
Blaauberg Beachfront
One of the more openly known meeting spots for gay men in Cape Town, particularly for cruising activity. The beachfront strip north of the city offers a combination of beach access and less-supervised areas. Popular on weekend afternoons and evenings.
Clifton 3rd Beach
Cape Town's unofficial gay beach. All four Clifton beaches are beautiful, but 3rd is the one with the consistent gay presence — a mix of sunbathing, socialising, and the opportunity for more private meetings among the boulders and dune sections above the main beach. Peak season is November through March. The vibe is relaxed and the crowd is mixed internationally.
V&A Waterfront
The Clock Tower Centre area of the V&A Waterfront is noted in gay guides as having cruising facilities, particularly the bathrooms on the upper levels. Busy tourist area, which offers both anonymity and risk — busy foot traffic means discretion is essential.
Wet Warehouse
Features private viewing areas. More of an indoor venue than a public spot — less risk than outdoor areas for those who prefer a structured environment.
Cape Quarter Upstairs Toilets
The Cape Quarter is a lifestyle and retail complex in De Waterkant. The bathrooms on the upper floors are a known meeting spot. Access codes apply during certain hours.
The Gay Neighbourhoods
De Waterkant is Cape Town's primary gay district — Victorian architecture, cobbled streets, bars, restaurants, and gay-owned shops. It sits right next to the V&A Waterfront development.
Green Point lies south of De Waterkant and hosts major LGBTQ+ events including the Pink Party during Cape Town Pride.
Sea Point runs along the Atlantic seaboard with a long promenade. Less dense gay infrastructure but a very gay-friendly atmosphere.
Cape Town Pride
Held annually (typically February–March), Cape Town Pride is the largest LGBTQ+ event on the African continent. The main parade and events concentrate in De Waterkant and Green Point, with the Stadiumfest at Cape Town Stadium drawing thousands.
