Ipanema Beach — Posto 9 ("Gay Farme")
The most visible LGBTQ+ gathering point in Rio — the stretch of beach near lifeguard post 9 (Posto 9), close to Rua Farme de Amoedo. Rainbow flags, gay beach vendors, and a crowd that's been coming here since the 1980s. It's a social scene as much as anything — sunbathing, meeting people, and eventually heading to the bars as the sun goes down. Peak season is October through March.

The street running from the beach into Ipanema that functions as the gay neighbourhood's spine. Bars, restaurants, and shops catering to LGBTQ+ visitors line the block. "To Nem Aí" and "Bar Bofetada" both host live music and themed events. The atmosphere is relaxed and openly gay without being exclusive — anyone's welcome.
