After midnight the Old Town goes quiet in layers. The hejnał has sounded its last broken call from St Mary's tower, the horse-drawn carriages have gone home from the Main Square, and the Planty, the ring of tree-lined park where the medieval walls once stood, empties down to dog walkers, couples and the odd patrol. A few streets north, behind an anonymous courtyard door, someone rings a buzzer and heads down the stairs into a basement. Kraków's cruising scene is small and almost entirely indoors: two men-only cruise clubs with darkrooms, Ciemnia and Blue XL, one gay sauna across the river, and the apps. The park has a long reputation, but it's the riskiest and least rewarding option in town.
Legal in one line: sex between men has been legal in Poland since 1932, with an equal age of consent of 15, but same-sex couples have no legal recognition: in 2026 Parliament passed a law creating a registered "closest person" status for couples (Sejm on 29 May, Senate on 25 June), and President Karol Nawrocki vetoed it on 17 July 2026; on 17 September the Sejm fell 27 votes short of the three-fifths majority needed to override the veto. Cruise clubs and saunas are legal private venues for adults; sex in public can be punished as an "indecent act" under Article 140 of the Code of Petty Offences, with a fine of up to 1,500 złoty.
How Kraków cruising works
Don't expect Berlin. Kraków has two cruise clubs, both men-only, both in basements with discreet courtyard entrances, both busiest late on Friday and Saturday nights. You ring a bell, get buzzed in, pay a cover charge (bring cash), and inside you'll find a small bar, a darkroom and a maze of cabins and corners. Themed nights (naked, underwear, sportswear and fetish) are announced on the clubs' Facebook pages rather than on fixed calendars, and published hours lag behind reality, so check the week's posts before you set out. Grindr and Romeo fill the gaps, and Spartakus covers the daytime.
The cruise clubs
Ciemnia · ul. Świętego Filipa 7
Ciemnia means "darkroom" in Polish (literally, a photographer's darkroom), and that's the point. The club spent years in a basement at Krowoderska 31 and moved in January 2020 to ulica Świętego Filipa 7, a few minutes' walk north of the Old Town and the Planty; a Travel Gay reviewer described the "opening night in a new Ciemnia Club with a new address". Some guides still give the old address, so use the new one.
misterb&b, with visitor reviews from August 2026, calls it the city's first venue of its kind and describes a men-only, 18+ cruising club built for sex rather than dancing: a large darkroom, a maze, glory holes, private cabins, a sling and a video room, plus a low-priced bar, a smoking room and a small shop selling condoms, lube and poppers. You ring the buzzer, cross the courtyard and go down to the basement, where you pay the entry in cash. Themed nights include naked and underwear parties and sport, sneaker and uniform fetish nights, and Fridays and Saturdays are busiest, with after-parties that can run into mid-morning.
Hours (as listed by Travel Gay): Tuesday–Thursday 21:00–06:00, Friday–Saturday 21:00–10:00, Sunday 21:00–04:00, closed Monday. That listing hasn't been refreshed for some time, and hours can change at short notice, so check its Facebook page before you go. Staff are said to speak English.
Blue XL · ul. Dietla 85
On Dietla, the broad tree-lined avenue that divides the Old Town's southern edge from Kazimierz, on the same avenue as the Club Papuga dance club. You enter from the courtyard at the back and ring the bell to be let in. Travel Gay (updated in August 2026) describes an air-conditioned cruise club and bar with a maze, a darkroom, cabins, a small cinema, a dance floor, a bar and a smoking area, and says it gets very busy at weekends; In Your Pocket calls it a men-only cruising and sex club with a maze of rooms and a space to sit and drink.
Hours (as listed by Travel Gay): Thursday and Sunday 21:00–03:00, Friday and Saturday 21:00–06:00, closed Monday to Wednesday. It's run as a private club with an entry fee at the door; reports differ on whether cards are accepted, so bring cash. Themed parties are announced on its Facebook page and at bluexl.pl. Online visitor reviews praise friendly staff and a lively weekend crowd but complain about smoke, queues at the door and a shortage of condoms and lube, so bring your own.
The sauna
Spartakus Sauna & Fitness · ul. Marii Konopnickiej 20, Dębniki
Kraków's only gay sauna, according to In Your Pocket and Travel Gay: men-only and open since 1991, across the Vistula from Wawel. It has a dry sauna, a steam sauna, a hammam, a small gym, relaxation rooms (one in darkroom style), private cabins, a café and a rooftop sun terrace. Its website gives Monday–Saturday 12:00–23:00 and Sundays and public holidays 14:00–21:00, and in October 2026 listed a normal ticket at 57 złoty and a reduced one at 48 złoty (the reduced price applies to everyone from 20:00). Expect a quiet, mostly older crowd rather than a party. See our Kraków saunas guide for the full details.
Outdoors: the Planty behind the Słowacki Theatre
The Planty is the green ring of park that circles the Old Town on the line of the old city walls, a continuous belt of paths, benches and trees used all day by commuters, students, tourists and families. The stretch behind the Słowacki Theatre, between ulica Basztowa and ulica Mikołajska on the north-eastern side of the Old Town, has a long history as a gay cruising area. In Your Pocket's LGBTQ+ guide (updated in May 2026) says it has been "notorious for gay cruising in the evenings until quite late at night", but adds that it hears the scene there is "mostly rent boys and trade can be rough", and warns readers to "beware of gay bashers lurking as well".
In practice this is a central, lit public park, not a secluded spot. City guards (Straż Miejska) and police run joint night patrols in central Kraków: on one Friday night in August 2024, Radio Kraków reported, they recorded 167 offences in the city centre, including hooliganism, "indecent behaviour" and drinking alcohol where it's banned. We don't give meeting points, and we don't recommend going.
The law on public sex in Poland: under Article 140 of the Code of Petty Offences (Kodeks wykroczeń), anyone who "publicly commits an indecent act" (nieobyczajny wybryk) faces arrest, restriction of liberty, a fine of up to 1,500 złoty or a reprimand. "Public" means a place where the act could be seen by an undefined number of people: a park path, a car park or a car at the roadside all count. Drinking alcohol in parks and on the street is also generally banned in Poland.
If you're in the Planty at night anyway:
- Carry as little as possible: no passport, one card, a little cash, and your phone out of sight.
- Be wary of anyone who asks for money, and of men who approach in pairs or groups; In Your Pocket's 2026 guide still warns of gay-bashers here.
- Stay sober enough to walk away, and tell a friend where you are.
- Keep to lit paths, and leave if a patrol, residents or anyone uninvolved is nearby.
- If something happens, call 112. Take a Bolt or Uber home rather than walking alone through quiet streets.
- Cash: Poland uses the złoty (PLN). Cards and BLIK work almost everywhere in town, but bring cash for cruise club entry and drinks. Spartakus takes cards.
- Lockers and cloakrooms: leave your wallet and phone in the locker or cloakroom (szatnia) before you head into a darkroom. No photos, anywhere.
- Getting home: MPK night trams and buses run across the city, and Bolt, Uber and FreeNow are cheap and widely used. Kraków Airport (KRK) at Balice has a train link to Kraków Główny, next to the Old Town.
- Apps: Grindr is the main app in Poland, and Romeo is popular with older locals. Many profiles are discreet; respect that, and meet somewhere public first.
- Health: visitors report that condoms and lube aren't always available at the clubs, so bring your own. If you take chems, never mix GHB/GBL with alcohol, and call 112 in an emergency. Kraków's queer community centre, Dom EQ, is a good first contact for local health and support information.
- Consent: in a darkroom, a hand moved away means no. Respect it, and expect the same.
- Cześć – hi. Dzięki – thanks. Na zdrowie! – cheers!
- Ciemnia – darkroom. Kabina – cabin. Szafka – locker.
- Wstęp – entry. Ile kosztuje wstęp? – how much is entry? Gotówka – cash. Karta – card.
- Szatnia – cloakroom, changing room.
- Nago – naked. Bielizna – underwear. Impreza – party.
- Nie, dziękuję – no, thank you. Stop – stop (same as in English).
- Gej – gay. Marsz Równości – Equality March (Pride).
- Pomocy! – help! Policja – police.
The safer alternatives are a few minutes' walk away: Ciemnia, Blue XL and Spartakus are legal, private and staffed.
Closed or moved: Twierdza, a men-only sex club at Rynek Dębnicki 6 in Dębniki with Friday and Saturday parties, is marked closed by Travel Gay and misterb&b. Ciemnia no longer operates at Krowoderska 31; it moved to Świętego Filipa 7 in January 2020, so ignore older guides that send you to Krowoderska.
A Kraków night, done properly
Start in Kazimierz, where the round brick market hall on Plac Nowy is ringed with hatches selling zapiekanki, half-baguettes topped with mushrooms and melted cheese, and the bars on Józefa Street glow by candlelight. Have a szarlotka, bison-grass vodka with apple juice, at a friendly bar and sing a song at ZOO Klub. Blue XL on Dietla is a short walk away; Ciemnia is a short taxi ride north of the Old Town. At dawn the blue street carts start selling the obwarzanek, Kraków's braided bread ring, and it's the traditional breakfast on the way home. Our Kraków bars guide has the full list of bars and clubs.
Practical tips
Pride: Queerowy Maj and the Marsz Równości
Kraków's Pride takes up the whole of May. Queerowy Maj (Queer May) is a month-long festival of talks, parties and culture that ends with the Marsz Równości (Equality March). The 22nd march took place on Saturday 23 May 2026: it set off at 14:00 from outside the National Museum, passed the Main Square and Wawel and headed towards Rynek Podgórski, under the slogan "Nie rzucim ziemi" ("We will not forsake our land"), with honorary patronage from the city's mayor. The 2027 date hadn't been announced at the time of writing; expect a Saturday in May.

Where is Ciemnia club in Kraków now?
Ciemnia moved in January 2020 from its old basement at Krowoderska 31 to ulica Świętego Filipa 7, just north of the Old Town. Is there a gay sauna in Kraków?
Yes, one: Spartakus Sauna & Fitness at ulica Marii Konopnickiej 20 in Dębniki, men-only and open since 1991. Its website gives Monday to Saturday 12:00–23:00 and Sundays and holidays 14:00–21:00, with a normal ticket at 57 złoty in October 2026. It is a relaxed local sauna rather than a party venue.
