The honest summary: Johannesburg has Africa's strongest queer legal protections and a lot of queer history, but in 2026 its gay bar scene is small and spread out. The real nightlife is a short strip of 7th Street in Melville, one sauna-club in Ferndale, a men-only bar in Doornfontein, and a long list of roving parties you find on Instagram. Babylon, the best-known gay bar of the last decade, closed on 1 March 2026. Come for Pride in late October, the history and the parties, and plan every journey by car.
Legal in one line: Same-sex sexual activity is legal. South Africa's 1993 interim constitution was the first in the world to ban discrimination on sexual orientation, and the 1996 constitution kept it in Section 9. Same-sex marriage has been legal since the Civil Union Act came into force on 30 November 2006, and South Africa is still the only African country where it is.
Where queer Joburg actually is
There is no gay village. Melville, north-west of the centre, is the closest thing to one: In Your Pocket's 2026 queer guides and Rainbow Tour Guides (updated October 2026) both put its 7th Street bars at the centre of the scene, and the area has had a revival since 2025. Braamfontein, the student district next to Wits University, is where the GALA archive is and where several queer parties started. Maboneng in the east of the inner city hosts some of the roving nights. Rosebank is a sensible base, walkable by day, with a Gautrain station. Sandton is the business district, where Pride now takes place; it has its own Sandton page with its hotels.
Bars and clubs
Ratz Bar (9 7th Street, Melville) has described itself as proudly queer since the mid-1990s. New management took over in August 2025, and In Your Pocket lists retro R&B on Sundays, soulful house on Wednesdays and Margarita Fridays.
Liquid Blue (8 7th Street, almost opposite Ratz) is a cocktail and dance bar that both In Your Pocket and Rainbow Tour Guides describe as a long-time favourite of Joburg's Black and POC queer crowd. Thursday and Friday are the best nights; Saturday gets packed after about 22:00. Most people do Ratz and Liquid Blue as one night.
The Great Dane moved from Braamfontein to 8 Main Road, Melville, in August 2025. It is a mixed bar, not a gay one, but the local queer guides list it as popular with the crowd on Saturdays.
The Factory (6 6th Street, New Doornfontein, near Ellis Park) is a men-only bar. South African Tourism's gay Joburg guide describes it that way, and its X handle is @nude_bar. We couldn't confirm opening hours, and the area is not one to walk in at night.
According to Travel Gay's 2026 guide, The Rec Room is the city's only gay sauna. It's in the Phoenix Centre on Malibongwe Drive, Ferndale (Randburg). misterb&b lists a licensed bar, a dark room, a jacuzzi, a dry sauna, leather and fetish nights and a Thursday buddy night. Its listed hours are Monday to Thursday 12:00 to midnight and Friday and Saturday 12:00 to 07:00. Check recroom.co.za for current prices. We don't list outdoor cruising spots for Johannesburg: current sources don't document any, and in this city it would not be safe.
Much of queer Joburg happens at nights that move between venues. In Your Pocket's October 2026 round-up lists these:
EDEN, for women and queer people (@eden.the.fruit)
Other Village People and its Same Sex Saturday (@othervillagepeople)
P_ssy Party (@p_ssyparty), which started at Kitcheners in Braamfontein
Queerioke by the Deconformists, on the first Friday of the month in Melville
VNJ Ball, the vogue scene (@vnj_ball)

Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
Babylon the Bar (Illovo Muse, Oxford Road): last night 28 February 2026. It now only does occasional pop-ups at Pink Mama's in Dunkeld.
Beefcakes Johannesburg (Illovo): closed. Travel Gay marks it closed and reports it went into liquidation.
Democracy Bar (Illovo Muse) and Simply Blue (Selby): closed.
Reaction (Cresta) and other names from the 1990s and 2000s appear only in archives. Older guides that mention them are out of date.
Out in Africa, the gay and lesbian film festival, ran from 1994 to 2018 and has ended.
Pride and the calendar
Africa's first Pride march took place in Johannesburg on 13 October 1990. It was organised by GLOW, the group Simon Nkoli helped found. About 800 people marched, and some wore paper bags over their heads so they couldn't be identified (South African History Online). Johannesburg Pride, run by Pride of Africa, is now a street festival on Katherine Street in Sandton. The 2026 edition is on Saturday 31 October 2026. Entry is free, the march leaves at 14:00 and the party runs until midnight. In 2025 it was on 25 October, on the same street. Soweto Pride has been organised since 2004 by the Forum for the Empowerment of Women (FEW). It is held on the last Saturday of September and focuses on Black lesbian and trans lives and safety. Pretoria has its own separate Pride, also in October.
History worth seeing
Constitution Hill in Braamfontein is the old prison complex that now houses the Constitutional Court. The court struck down the sodomy laws and ruled for marriage equality. The GALA Queer Archive is on the 7th floor of the Es'kia Mphahlele Building at Wits (corner of Jorissen and Bertha Streets). Office hours are Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 15:00, and you need an appointment to see the collections. In 1999 a corner in Hillbrow was named after Simon Nkoli. Go with a guided tour, not alone.
Health and community
Engage Men's Health is a free clinic for gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men, run by OUT LGBT Well-being. It offers HIV prevention, testing and STI care, and moved from Melville to Rosebank (Glenhove Road) in May 2024. OUT's main office is in Pretoria. Iranti, a Johannesburg-based group, campaigns for queer and trans people.
Use Uber or Bolt door to door at night, even for short distances. Don't walk between venues after dark, and keep your phone out of sight on the street.
Dating apps work, but robberies set up through apps are a documented problem in South Africa. Meet first in a public bar, and don't share your hotel details until you trust the person.
The Gautrain runs from O.R. Tambo Airport (JNB) to Sandton. Its north–south line runs through Rosebank and Park Station.
The city is at about 1,750 m. Winter (June–August) has bright days and cold nights, and summer brings afternoon thunderstorms.
Hours change often in Joburg, so check a venue's Instagram on the day.
A few words
"Sharp" (OK, cool), "Howzit" (hello), "Eish" (oh no), "Lekker" (Afrikaans: nice, great). In isiZulu, "Sawubona" is hello and "Ngiyabonga" is thank you.

Is Babylon still open? No. Babylon the Bar in Illovo closed on 1 March 2026 and now only runs occasional pop-ups.
When is Johannesburg Pride 2026? Saturday 31 October 2026, on Katherine Street in Sandton. Entry is free.
Does Johannesburg have a gay sauna? Yes, one: The Rec Room in Ferndale, Randburg.
Where do queer women go out? Mostly at parties rather than fixed bars, such as EDEN, P_ssy Party and Other Village People nights. Liquid Blue and Ratz in Melville are the regular bars.
