The honest summary: gay Melbourne lives on Smith Street, on the border of Fitzroy and Collingwood, where half a dozen queer bars sit within a few hundred metres of each other. Everything else spreads out across the inner suburbs: a gay pub in Richmond, a men's pub in Abbotsford, a community bar in Footscray, the Pride Centre in St Kilda and two big saunas. The old Commercial Road strip in South Yarra is history. The biggest event is Midsumma, three weeks of queer arts every January and February.

Where the scene is

Through the 1980s and 1990s Melbourne's gay life ran along Commercial Road in Prahran and South Yarra, anchored by the Market Hotel and the Xchange Hotel. Both closed around 2011, and the centre of gravity moved north. Every current guide we checked (Time Out, Star Observer, emen8, thegaypassport) now puts the hub on Smith Street, with Collingwood, Abbotsford and Richmond close by. St Kilda matters for the Victorian Pride Centre and the Pride March. Footscray in the west has its own community-owned bar.

The 86 tram runs the length of Smith Street from the CBD, so most visitors can stay in the city and ride up for the night.

Bars and clubs on and around Smith Street

    • Sircuit Bar (103-105 Smith St, Fitzroy): the strip's long-running gay bar, with drag and shows from Thursday to Sunday and a small dance floor that fills late at weekends. Mondays and Tuesdays host ADAM, a ticketed nude men's social night.
    • Mollie's Bar & Diner (same building, upstairs): a bar and diner from Sircuit's owners, with drag, drag bingo, DJs and a rooftop.
    • UBQ (97 Smith St): a queer bar upstairs with drag bingo, karaoke Fridays and Tuesday trivia, per its own listings. LCKR ROOM runs late cruise and party nights on the ground floor of the same building.
    • The 86 (185 Smith St): a small drag and cabaret bar with a Late Night Show on Saturdays.
    • Evie's Disco Diner (230-232 Gertrude St, around the corner): a disco-themed bar and diner, not a gay bar, but a regular stop for drag bingo and karaoke.
    • Yah Yah's (99 Smith St): a mainstream late bar most nights, with a weekly queer Thursday called Thursgay.
    • The Peel Hotel (Wellington St at Peel St, Collingwood): the late-night gay men's club, open Friday to Sunday from about 9pm until 5am or later. It has a legal exemption that lets the door turn away people who are not gay men.
    • The Laird (149 Gipps St, Abbotsford): the men-only pub for bears and leather. Star Observer reported in November 2025 that it had been sold to the team behind the Hanky fetish party and would stay a men's venue.
    • DT's Hotel (164 Church St, Richmond): a gay pub with drag and karaoke, open from noon.

    Bars for queer women

Melbourne has had trouble keeping a lesbian bar open. Beans Bar on Smith Street closed for good in March 2025 (QNews). Two places now fill the gap: Bernie's FLINTA Bar in Fitzroy North, a FLINTA bar that opened in 2026, and Flippy’s Queer Bar on Sydney Road in Brunswick, open Thursday to Saturday. Watch the Get Weird and The Lesbian Club calendars for parties.

    The west and the south

Pride of our Footscray Nightclub & Bar (POOFS, upstairs at 86-88 Hopkins St) is a not-for-profit bar owned by community shareholders. It nearly closed in 2023 and is still running drag, karaoke and party nights. South of the river, the big Saturday dance party is POOF DOOF at Chasers, 386 Chapel St, South Yarra. It is a club night, not a gay bar. Homo Erotica runs themed parties at Inflation on King Street in the CBD a few times a year.

    Saunas and cruise clubs

    • Subway Sauna (Vault 13, 397 Flinders St, CBD): open 24/7, with steam, dry sauna, spa and about 30 rooms. Entry was $30 on weekdays and $32 at weekends when we checked, with cheaper Tuesdays.
    • Wet on Wellington (162 Wellington St, Collingwood): one of the largest gay saunas in Australia, with a 25m pool, spa, steam, dry sauna and a rooftop. Cash only, ID scanned at the door, $24-$34 depending on day and time.
    • Peninsula Sauna & Spa (16 Cumberland Dr, Seaford, about 40km south-east): a smaller sauna with a dungeon and nude nights. Cash only, from $20.
    • Spartacus Lounge (Level 1, 20 Waratah Pl, CBD): a cruise club with cabins, open 9am to 11pm.

Details are in the Melbourne saunas guide. We don't list outdoor cruising spots. Beats in public parks are policed, and public sex is an offence in Victoria.

    Beach

Sunnyside North Beach at Mount Eliza on the Mornington Peninsula, about 50km from the CBD, is the only legal clothing-optional beach in metropolitan Melbourne. Gay men and naturists both use it on warm weekends. You'll need a car.

    Community, culture and books

The Victorian Pride Centre & Australian Queer Archives at 79-81 Fitzroy St, St Kilda, opened in 2021 as Australia's first purpose-built LGBTIQA+ centre. Inside are the Australian Queer Archives, JOY 94.9 community radio, a Thorne Harbour clinic and Hares & Hyenas, the queer bookshop that moved here from Fitzroy in late 2021. Since 2025 the centre has closed on Sundays and public holidays. Thorne Harbour Health in Abbotsford is Victoria's main LGBTIQ+ health organisation. Switchboard's Rainbow Door line (1800 729 367, 10am-5pm daily) helps with support and referrals.

    Midsumma and the calendar

Midsumma Festival 2027 runs from Sunday 17 January to Sunday 7 February, according to the festival's website.

    • Midsumma Carnival, Sunday 17 January at Alexandra Gardens: the free opening day by the Yarra.
    • Midsumma Pride March, Sunday 31 January from 10:30am along Fitzroy Street, St Kilda. Victoria Police have not marched in uniform since 2025, after a uniform ban was trialled. Uniformed officers still police the route.
    • Victoria's Pride street party, Sunday 7 February on Gertrude and Smith Streets, Fitzroy, closing the festival.

The Melbourne Queer Film Festival runs from 13 to 22 November 2026. ChillOut in Daylesford, 90 minutes away, turns 30 in 2027 and expands to ten days, 27 February to 8 March (Star Observer). Midsumma 2028, its 40th year, is set for 16 January to 6 February.

Closed or changed: gone but still Googled

    • Market Hotel and Xchange Hotel, Commercial Rd, South Yarra: both closed around 2011.
    • Club 80, Collingwood: the sex club traded until about April 2020. The building was sold and is being redeveloped as offices.
    • Bay City Sauna, St Kilda: closed in December 2022 because of structural problems with the building (Star Observer).
    • Beans Bar, Smith St: closed 22 March 2025.
    • Greyhound Hotel, St Kilda: closed in January 2017.
    • Harehole, Johnston St: the performance space at Hares & Hyenas' old Fitzroy shop closed in February 2023. The shop itself is now in St Kilda.

    Practical tips

    • Arriving: SkyBus runs non-stop from Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine) to Southern Cross station about every 10 to 15 minutes, for roughly $25 one way. There is no train to the airport yet.
    • Getting around: trams are free inside the CBD and Docklands. From 1 June 2026 to 1 January 2027, all Victorian trains, trams and buses are half price, with a daily cap of $5.70. You can now tap on with a bank card or phone.
    • Late nights: the Peel doesn't fill up until after midnight. Start on Smith Street and walk over.
    • Cash: Wet on Wellington and Peninsula Sauna take cash only.
    • Weather: Midsumma falls in midsummer, and a 40°C day can be followed by a cold change. Pack a jacket.

    A few words of Australian

    • Beat: an outdoor cruising spot.
    • SOPV: sex-on-premises venue, the official term for saunas and cruise clubs.
    • Shout: to buy a round ("my shout").
    • FLINTA: women, lesbians, intersex, non-binary, trans and agender people. You'll see it on door policies.

FAQ

Where is Melbourne's gay area?

Smith Street on the Fitzroy-Collingwood border, with Sircuit, Mollie's, UBQ and The 86 within a short walk, and the Peel, the Laird and DT's nearby. Commercial Road in South Yarra was the old gay strip, but its big venues closed around 2011.

When is Midsumma 2027?

17 January to 7 February 2027. The Carnival is on 17 January at Alexandra Gardens, the Pride March on 31 January in St Kilda, and Victoria's Pride street party on 7 February in Fitzroy.

How many gay saunas does Melbourne have?

Three: Subway Sauna in the CBD (24 hours), Wet on Wellington in Collingwood, and Peninsula Sauna in Seaford, about 40km south-east. Spartacus Lounge in the CBD is a cruise club rather than a sauna.

Is there a lesbian bar in Melbourne?

Yes, two: Bernie's, a FLINTA* bar in Fitzroy North that opened in 2026, and Flippy's on Sydney Road, Brunswick. Beans Bar on Smith Street closed in March 2025.

Is Melbourne safe for LGBTQ+ travellers?

Yes. Same-sex marriage is legal, and Victoria has anti-discrimination and anti-vilification laws that cover sexual orientation and gender identity. Use normal big-city sense late at night, especially around the CBD at closing time.
