Milan in autumn is grey stone, wet tram rails and fog rolling in off the Po plain, and the city's answer is steam. Behind unmarked doors near the central station, out by the railway yards of Lambrate and up the green line in Cimiano, men swap suits for a towel and a locker key. The scene is smaller than its reputation and almost entirely run as private clubs: you will need a membership card at every door. Here is the honest summary: four men's saunas that ARCO lists with current hours in 2026, one long-running name we could not confirm, and a few older names that have gone.
Legal in one line: sex between men is legal in Italy and same-sex civil unions have existed since 2016, though not full marriage. Gay saunas operate legally as private members' associations (circoli privati), which is why you will be asked for a card and ID.
The card you'll need: ARCO. ARCO, the Italian network of gay clubs, lists every sauna in this guide as requiring ARCO membership. You join at the desk on your first visit, showing photo ID. The standard AllClubs card is valid for a year at ARCO member clubs across Italy; if you are not an Italian citizen, ask for the ARCO Travel card, which carries a reduced fee and is valid for 90 days. Some clubs also issue a cheaper OneClub card valid only at that venue. Fees are set by each club, so ask at the first door and keep the card for the rest of your trip. Some older listings still mention ANDDOS or Arcigay cards; ARCO's directory is the current reference.
The four saunas
Metrò Sauna · Via Giovanni Schiaparelli 1, near Milano Centrale
The most central of the four, a short walk from the station, which makes it the obvious first stop off a train. ARCO describes Metrò as a club for men only that has been part of Milan's gay scene since the 1990s. misterb&b describes three floors with a dry sauna, a steam room and a wet area; Nighttours adds a whirlpool, cabins, darker cruising areas and a café. ARCO also mentions bar tables with sockets, if you need to answer an email between rounds.
Hours (ARCO): every day 12:00–24:00. Card: ARCO. Phone: +39 02 6671 9089; website metroclubmilano.it. Prices are not published online, so ask at the desk.
Royal Hammam · Via Plezzo 16, Lambrate
Within walking distance of Lambrate station and the M2 (green line), Royal Hammam calls itself, on its ARCO page, the reference sauna for Milan's gay community, visited from abroad and open every day of the year. Travel Gay lists a swimming pool with a terrace, a Turkish bath, a dry sauna, a jacuzzi with fountains, a dark room and a large bar area. Entry was listed at around €25 in 2025; check the current price at the desk.
Hours (ARCO): Monday to Friday 11:00–23:00; on Saturday it opens at 11:00 and runs non-stop through the night until 23:00 on Sunday. That Saturday all-nighter is the one to know about if you land after the metro has stopped. Card: ARCO. Phone: +39 02 2641 2189.
The Circolo Botulino, at the same address, runs late techno and house nights; ARCO lists it on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights, the Saturday session running until 09:00. Our Milan bars guide has the details.
Fenix Sauna · Via Oropa 3, Cimiano
A few minutes from Cimiano metro (M2) in the north-east, Fenix is the daytime sauna in the same building as the Hot Dog Club cruise club. ARCO calls it a gay club for men. Travel Gay says it is popular with bears and mature men, and lists a dry sauna, a large hydro-massage jacuzzi, a good-sized locker room, massage by appointment and a cruising space over two floors, one dry and one wet. A reviewer on misterb&b also mentions a Turkish bath and bear and leather nights. Hot Dog, also at Via Oropa 3 and also on an ARCO card, takes over in the evening: ARCO lists it Tuesday and Wednesday 21:00–02:00 and Thursday to Saturday 21:00–04:00, with naked and fetish nights.
Hours (ARCO): Monday to Saturday 13:00–21:00, Sunday 12:00–21:00. Card: ARCO. Company, the bear bar on Via Benadir, is a short walk away if you want a drink afterwards.
TBlue Sauna · Via Ernesto Breda 158, north Milan
TBlue presents itself on its ARCO page as a small spa club, focused on relaxation and personal care in a clean setting. Travel Gay calls it relatively new and lists a dry sauna, a large jacuzzi, showers, a bar and a lounge; misterb&b describes two levels and also mentions a Turkish bath and private cabins. ARCO pitches it as somewhere to unwind from the city rather than a party. It does not say whether it is men-only, so ask if it matters to you.
Hours (ARCO): every day 13:00–21:00. Card: ARCO. Website tbluesauna.it. It is the furthest out of the four. The nearest station is Villa San Giovanni on the M1 (red line), at Viale Monza; ARCO's map pin puts the club roughly 400–500 metres west of the station, so allow about ten minutes on foot.
Gone or unconfirmed:
- Thermas is not in ARCO's current directory or on Travel Gay's current list of Milan saunas, and the listings that still carry it disagree on the address (Via Bezzecca 9 or Via San Gregorio 35). We could not confirm that it is operating in 2026, so phone or look for recent reviews before you set off.
- Older names such as Alexander's Club and Magic Sauna have closed.
- Blue Angels: the club ARCO lists as "Blu Angels" is in Naples, not Milan.
- Card, ID, locker. At the desk you show your card (or take one out with your passport or EU ID), pay, and usually receive a towel and a locker key; bring flip-flops if you prefer your own.
- Shower first, and sit on your towel in the dry sauna.
- A look, then a move. Interest is shown with eye contact and patience. A hand gently removed, a step back or a quiet no, grazie is a full answer, and it is respected.
- No phones and no photos beyond the bar and lockers.
- Timing: weekday afternoons and evenings are quieter; weekends, and especially the Royal Hammam Saturday night, are when the saunas fill up. Many Milanese leave the city around Ferragosto (15 August) and plenty of businesses close for the holidays, so in August check each club's website or social pages, or phone, before you set off.
- Getting there: Metrò is by Centrale (M2 and M3); Royal Hammam by Lambrate (M2); Fenix by Cimiano (M2); TBlue near Villa San Giovanni (M1). A single urban ticket costs €2.20 and is valid for 90 minutes on metro, trams and buses; tap a contactless bank card or phone at the turnstile.
- Late at night: metro trains run until about 00:20–00:30 on M1 to M4. After that, ATM's NM1, NM2, NM3 and NM4 night buses follow the metro lines, and N25/N26 link Centrale and Cadorna. Book a licensed white taxi by app or at a rank from Lambrate or Cimiano late at night.
- Cash and valuables: bring photo ID and some cash for entry and the bar; leave passports and watches in the locker (armadietto) or at the hotel.
- Apps: Grindr and Romeo are both used in Milan. Meet in public first and tell a friend where you are going.
- Chems: never mix GHB/GBL with alcohol, and call 112 in an emergency.
- tessera – membership card. Ce l'ho / non ce l'ho – I have one / I don't.
- socio – member. documento – ID.
- ingresso – entry. Quanto costa? – how much is it?
- solo uomini – men only.
- asciugamano – towel. ciabatte – flip-flops. armadietto – locker.
- bagno turco – steam room. idromassaggio – jacuzzi.
- preservativo – condom.
- No, grazie – no, thanks; always enough.
Sauna etiquette, the Milanese way
Local colour
Milan's ritual is the aperitivo: from about six, buy a drink and the bar puts out snacks, sometimes a whole buffet. After an afternoon at Metrò, the bars of Porta Venezia are one stop away on the metro. Order a Negroni Sbagliato, the "mistaken" Negroni made with prosecco instead of gin, which Bar Basso claims to have invented. A sauna leaves you hungry: eat a saffron risotto alla milanese, or a crisp cotoletta, the breaded veal chop that Milanese will tell you is not a schnitzel. From November, the city's own panettone fills the shop windows.
Practical tips
Health and PEP: if a condom breaks, PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) needs to start as soon as possible and within 72 hours: go to a hospital emergency department (pronto soccorso). For HIV and STI testing, Milano Check Point and CIG Arcigay Milano can point you in the right direction. Sex in public places is illegal in Italy, with fines of €5,000 to €30,000; keep it inside the clubs. Our Milan cruising guide covers the cruise clubs and the law in more detail.
Pride
The 25th Milano Pride parade was held on Saturday 27 June 2026 under the theme "Corpi in Rivolta" (bodies in revolt). Pride Week ran from 24 to 26 June, with talks, music and shows in the Pride Square on Piazzale Lavater in Porta Venezia, and free, anonymous rapid HIV testing with Milano Check Point on Largo Bellintani. Marchers gathered on Via Vittor Pisani, opposite Centrale station, and walked by way of Piazza della Repubblica and Porta Volta to the Arco della Pace, where the day ended with speeches and a free concert. With temperatures around 38°C, the organisers moved the start to 17:00; they claimed 350,000 people, while local press noted a smaller turnout than in past years. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing; Turin has been chosen to host EuroPride in June 2027.
