Almere: The Netherlands' Youngest City

Almere rose from the bed of the former Zuiderzee, built on polder land reclaimed in the 1970s and granted city status in 1984. Today it is one of the fastest-growing municipalities in the country, home to roughly 220,000 people spread across five deliberately planned districts: Almere Stad (the centre), Almere Buiten, Almere Haven, Almere Poort and Almere Hout. It is a young, green, family-oriented commuter city rather than a nightlife destination, and its LGBTQ+ story is defined less by bars than by civic commitment: Almere is an official Dutch "Regenboogstad" (Rainbow City) that partners with the national government on LGBTQ+ acceptance policy.

A Rainbow City

The clearest sign of that commitment is literally underfoot. In October 2025 the city unveiled a permanent rainbow-and-transgender staircase on Belfortplein in the centre, timed to Coming Out Day. Almere flies the rainbow flag on civic occasions, funds inclusion programmes in schools and sport, and works through a network of local volunteer groups rather than a single gay quarter or venue.

The Dutch Legal and Social Context

The Netherlands was the first country in the world to open civil marriage to same-sex couples, in 2001, and anti-discrimination law protects LGBTQ+ people in employment, housing and services. Same-sex couples can hold hands and show affection in Almere without concern; safety related to LGBTQ+ identity is not an issue here, and ordinary big-town common sense is all that applies.

Is There a Gay Scene?

Honestly, no, not in the bars-and-clubs sense, and that is normal for a new commuter city this close to the capital. Almere has no dedicated gay bars, no gay clubs and no gay sauna. The cafes and bars of the Grote Markt and the Stadhuisplein in the centre are welcoming and mixed, but none is a queer venue. For a night out, Almere's LGBTQ+ residents simply take the train: Amsterdam Centraal is about 25 minutes away, putting the Reguliersdwarsstraat, Amstel and Warmoesstraat scenes within easy reach, and Utrecht's canal-side bars are roughly 45 minutes in the other direction.

Community and Organisations

Where Almere is genuinely strong is community. Roze Almere (rozealmere.nl) is the umbrella network for LGBTQ+ life in the city, connecting groups such as Roze 50+, the police-linked Roze in Blauw, a local Gay-Straight Alliance and Diversity Almere for young people. The Regenboognetwerk Flevoland coordinates rainbow activity across the wider province. There is no standalone COC Flevoland office today (COC Amsterdam e.o. covers the region through a local coordinator), but the volunteer network is active and easy to reach online.

Pride in Almere

Pride Almere is held in October, not the summer, and is built around Coming Out Day on 11 October. It is a cultural, awareness-focused Pride week rather than a party circuit, with theatre, talks, a "Roze Danspaleis" dance afternoon and other programming, much of it staged at the Kunstlinie arts centre (KAF). For the big canal-parade experience, Amsterdam Pride at the start of August is a short train ride away.

Outdoors and the Naturist Beach

Almere is ringed by water and woodland, and its outdoor life is a real draw. The Almeerderstrand recreation area in Almere Poort, on the IJmeer shore, includes the city's official naturist beach (sometimes called Zilverstrand). The dune section north-west of the main beach has long been known as a gay naturist and cruising spot; a 2018 redesign opened up the sightlines and deliberately reduced that use, so activity today is quieter and more discreet. It remains a tolerated public beach: visit sensibly, respect other beach-goers and local rules, and keep to the naturist-designated zone.

Getting Around and Where to Stay

Almere is exceptionally bike-friendly, with segregated cycle routes threading the whole city, and its train stations (Almere Centrum being the main one) run frequent direct trains to Amsterdam, Utrecht and beyond. The compact centre is easily walked. Hotels cluster around Almere Centrum and the station, practical, modern and generally cheaper than equivalent rooms in Amsterdam, which makes the city a comfortable, quieter base for travellers who want to day-trip into the capital's scene and sleep somewhere calmer.

Architecture, Art and Recreation

Almere is a showcase of contemporary Dutch urban design, and architecture is one of its genuine pleasures: the centre was masterplanned by Rem Koolhaas's OMA, and the Kunstlinie Almere Flevoland (KAF), designed by the architects of SANAA, sits on the Esplanade beside the Weerwater lake. The former Floriade 2022 horticultural expo grounds on the south bank are being redeveloped into a green residential district. Around the lakes you will find sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and long cycling routes across the flat Flevoland polder.

Who Should Visit

Almere suits LGBTQ+ travellers who want a calm, modern, water-and-cycling base within reach of Amsterdam rather than a gay nightlife destination in its own right. Families and couples looking for an affordable, accepting place to stay near the capital, and anyone curious about how the Dutch built an entire city from scratch, will feel at home. For bars, clubs and saunas, plan an evening in Amsterdam; for a friendly, green, genuinely inclusive day-to-day, Almere delivers.

よくある質問

Yes. The Netherlands has some of the world's strongest LGBTQ+ protections (it was the first country to open same-sex marriage, in 2001) and Almere is an official Dutch "Regenboogstad" (Rainbow City). Same-sex couples can be open here without concern; ordinary big-town common sense is all that applies.

Almere has no gay quarter and no dedicated gay venues. LGBTQ+ life is community-led rather than nightlife-based, coordinated by the Roze Almere network, and most residents head to Amsterdam (about 25 minutes by train) for a night out.

No. Almere has no dedicated gay bars, clubs or saunas, which is normal for a young commuter city so close to the capital. The cafes around the Grote Markt are welcoming and mixed, but for gay nightlife people travel to Amsterdam or Utrecht.

They are very different. Amsterdam has one of Europe's biggest gay scenes; Almere has none of its own and instead offers a calm, accepting, family-friendly base about 25 minutes away, with community groups and a cultural Pride rather than bars and clubs.

Almere Stad (the centre) around the Grote Markt, Stadhuisplein and the Weerwater waterfront is the main area for hotels and dining, and home to the rainbow staircase on Belfortplein. Almere Poort, on the coast, has the Almeerderstrand naturist beach. All districts are safe and linked by excellent cycle routes.

Pride Almere is held in October, built around Coming Out Day on 11 October, with a cultural programme (theatre, talks and a "Roze Danspaleis" dance afternoon) largely at the Kunstlinie arts centre. For a big parade, Amsterdam Pride in early August is a short train ride away.
