The honest summary: Soest is a leafy commuter municipality of about 48,000 people between Utrecht and Amersfoort, known for woods, drift-sand dunes and the old royal palace on its border. It has no gay bar, no gay club, no gay sauna and no LGBTQ+ group of its own that we could find. It is a calm, safe place to sleep, walk and cycle, with Amersfoort, Utrecht and Hilversum close enough for a night out.
Legal in one line: The Netherlands opened marriage and adoption to same-sex couples on 1 April 2001 (the first country to do so), dropped surgery and sterilisation requirements for legal gender change in July 2014, and since 22 February 2023 names sexual orientation in article 1 of the constitution.
What the scene actually looks like
We checked homohoreca.nl (the Dutch register of gay bars and saunas, run since 2001), Travel Gay-style listings, Dutch local news and map searches in English and Dutch ("homobar", "roze café", "LHBTI Soest"). None of them list a gay or queer venue in Soest, Soestdijk, Soestduinen or Soesterberg, now or in the recent past. Nightlife here means a few cafés and restaurants around the town centre and Soestdijk, all of them mainstream.
Same-sex couples will not stand out. Dutch attitudes are relaxed, and this is a well-off, mostly residential area. As in most Dutch villages, the usual advice applies: late at night, near a closing bar, be as sensible as you would anywhere.
There is no local Pride and no Soest LGBTQ+ network that we could confirm. Search engines sometimes claim the municipality raises the rainbow flag on Coming Out Day, but the articles they point to do not mention Soest, so we are not repeating it. Regional support comes from COC Midden-Nederland, which covers the province of Utrecht.
Where to go out nearby
Amersfoort (about 6 km east). The closest queer bar is Lapart at Hof 6 in Amersfoort's old centre, an LGBTQ+ café that is busiest on Friday and Saturday nights (listed on homohoreca.nl and Arrival Guides in 2026). We don't cover Amersfoort as a city yet, so there is no Lapart page on this site. Amersfoort Pride was held on Friday 10 July 2026, with a Pride walk through the old centre and parties around town (Tijd voor Amersfoort).
Utrecht (about 20 minutes by train). Utrecht has two gay bars, both on the Oudegracht: Café Bodytalk, open since 1987 and now a mixed dance café, and Café Kalff. Utrecht Canal Pride filled the Oudegracht with a boat parade on Saturday 6 June 2026.
Hilversum (about 17 km north-west). The Rainbow Bar runs drag, quiz nights and the Gooise Pride borrel under new owners (Live Hilversum, homohoreca.nl). It is closed on Mondays. Hilversum is not a city page on this site yet either.
Saunas. There is no gay sauna in Soest, Amersfoort, Utrecht or Hilversum. Peter Koop of homohoreca told DutchNews in August 2026 that only eight gay saunas are left in the whole country. The practical option from Soest is Amsterdam, about 50 minutes by train, where we list Sauna Nieuwezijds.

Cruising
We found no source, Dutch or English, that names a cruising area in the municipality, including the Soester Duinen. We don't list one, and we don't publish meeting points or times for outdoor spots anywhere. For the nearest city, see our Utrecht cruising page, which covers the law and safety side.
Where to stay
Hotels here are mainstream. We list them as gay-friendly in the ordinary sense, not as gay hotels.
- Stayokay Hostel Soest on Bosstraat, a hostel on the wooded edge of town with private rooms, a bar and breakfast.
- Fletcher Hotel-Restaurant Het Witte Huis on Birkstraat, a four-star hotel with 42 rooms on the Amersfoort side of town.
- DoubleTree by Hilton Royal Parc Soestduinen, in the woods south of Soest, with a nine-hole golf course and spa.
- B&B Soestdijk on Koninginnelaan, a small B&B with wellness facilities.
- Kontakt der Kontinenten in Soesterberg, a conference hotel in a former mission house.
- Hotel Ernst Sillem Hoeve, just over the border in Den Dolder (municipality of Zeist), on a wooded estate with a pool.
- Trains: Soest has three stations, Soestdijk, Soest and Soest Zuid, on the Den Dolder–Baarn line. A stopping train runs every 30 minutes to Utrecht Centraal, about 20 minutes from Soest Zuid. Amsterdam Centraal is about 50 minutes and Schiphol about an hour, both with a change in Utrecht. For Amersfoort, change at Baarn or take the bus.
- Things to see: the Soester Duinen (Lange and Korte Duinen), the largest drift-sand area in Utrecht province; the Nationaal Militair Museum on the former Soesterberg air base (Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–17:00); and Paleis Soestdijk, which sits just over the border in Baarn and opens for exhibitions.
- Getting around: the town is spread out, so a bike is the easiest way to get around. Check the NS app for the last train back before a late night in Utrecht or Amsterdam.
- homo / lesbisch / queer: gay / lesbian / queer
- LHBTIQ+: the Dutch version of LGBTIQ+
- roze: pink, used for anything gay ("roze café", "roze zaterdag")
- Waar is de dichtstbijzijnde homobar?: Where is the nearest gay bar?
If nightlife is the point of the trip, staying in Utrecht or Amsterdam makes more sense. Soest suits people who want quiet woods and are happy to take a train out for the evening.

Practical tips
Closed or changed
Older versions of this page and some directories listed a "gay bar" or "sauna" under Soest. They were data errors: a handful of personal names imported as bars, a café in Hilversum, and Sauna Azzurra, which is in Beuningen near Nijmegen, about 70 km away. We removed all of them in October 2026. We found no record of a gay venue in Soest that has since closed.
