Gay Bars and Clubs in San Juan, Puerto Rico: The Honest 2026 Guide

Last verified: October 2026 · Compiled from venue pages, Grindr's and misterb&b's 2026 listings, Travel Gay, the Puerto Rico tourism board and local press · Report a change

The honest summary: San Juan has about a dozen gay bars and clubs, more than anywhere else in the Caribbean, but they are not on one street. The core is a few blocks of Santurce around Calle Condado and Avenida Fernández Juncos, with one queer bar in Old San Juan, one lounge in Condado and two local bars in Hato Rey. The crowd is mostly Puerto Rican, the music is mostly Latin, and nothing gets going before 11pm.

Legal in one line: Puerto Rico is a US territory, with same-sex marriage since 2015 and employment protection since 2013; the drinking age is 18, so bring ID.

Santurce: where the clubs are

Kweens Klub (1211 Avenida Fernández Juncos) opened in December 2021 and is the island's main drag club. A resident cast performs on Friday nights, and touring queens appear on ticketed dates; Sasha Colby is booked for 19 December 2026. It also hosts the Saturday party of San Juan Bear Weekend.

Toxic Night Club (613 Calle Condado) runs two to three floors of Latin music, drag and dancers, and stays open very late at weekends, often until around 5am. It is young, local and loud.

SX The Club (1204 Avenida Ponce de León) calls itself the most hardcore gay club in Puerto Rico: go-go dancers, a dark room and a crowd that turns up after the other bars. Reviews are mixed on the door and the drinks.

El Purgatorio (1199 Calle del Carmen) relaunched as a bear bar in December 2023, run with Puerto Rico Bear Events. It opens mainly on Friday and Saturday nights for leather, pup, underwear and shirtless nights and bear drag.

Tía María's Liquor Store (326 Avenida José de Diego) is the veteran: a liquor store with a bar, a pool table and cheap drinks, where gay regulars have met for decades. Go early in the evening, before the clubs.

LadyBugBar (1700 Avenida Ponce de León, in the Hotel San Jorge building) is an LGBTQ-owned cocktail bar that replaced Zal Si Puedes, with drag shows and a conversational crowd. El Local en Santurce (1425 Avenida Fernández Juncos) is a cheap dive and art bar open since 2008, with karaoke and queer drag nights featuring queens and kings.

Many nights start at La Placita de Santurce, the market square that becomes a street party after dark. It is mixed rather than gay, but it is where people meet before moving to the clubs.

Condado, Old San Juan and Hato Rey

In Condado, Oasis Tapas & Lounge on Avenida Condado, the former Splash Lounge, is a gay lounge with tapas and drag at weekends, a few minutes from the beach hotels. The beach bar at the Tryst Beachfront Hotel hosts a Sunday drag brunch beside the Condado gay beach.

In Old San Juan, La Sombrilla Rosa (154 Calle San Sebastián) is the old city's one queer bar, with drag and themed nights and a big following on Google. It gets packed during the San Sebastián street festival in January.

In Hato Rey, Macarena (247 Avenida Eleanor Roosevelt) is a gay bar and club open Thursday to Sunday, with a Sunday pool party, and Mike's Bar (El Cojo) is the small local pub across the street. Both are a US$10–15 Uber from Condado.

The one men's club

San Juan has no big gay sauna. Xteamworks Men Play Room in Santurce is a small, weekend-only men's club with cabins, dark areas and a maze; several visitors report that there is no working steam room. Our cruising guide has the details and the law.

Closed or changed

    • Circo on Calle Condado is permanently closed; Toxic and SX are now the clubs on that stretch.
    • Zal Si Puedes at the Hotel San Jorge closed; LadyBugBar took its place.
    • Splash Lounge in Condado is now Oasis Tapas & Lounge.
    • Starz, Wet Bar and DBLB still show up in old lists; we found no sign they operate.
    • Club 77 in Río Piedras is still listed by the tourism board as a queer-allied club, but we couldn't confirm it is open in 2026.
    • Las Ruinas in Old San Juan is a mainstream bathhouse spa and gym, not a gay venue.

    Practical tips

    • Timing: Thursday to Saturday are the main nights; clubs fill after 11pm and Toxic runs to about 5am. Sunday belongs to the beach, the Tryst brunch and Macarena's pool party.
    • Check Instagram: published hours are unreliable here. Every bar posts the week's line-up on Instagram or Facebook, and drag shows often start after midnight.
    • Getting around: the three areas are a few kilometres apart. Uber is cheap (US$6–15) and the safe choice at night; don't walk the avenues alone late.
    • Money: US dollars, cards widely accepted; carry some cash for cover charges and drag tips.
    • Language: Spanish is the bar language, though staff almost always speak English.

A few words in Spanish

Bar de ambiente (gay bar), dragas (drag queens), cover (entry charge), ¿A qué hora empieza el show? (what time does the show start?), ¡Wepa! (Puerto Rico's all-purpose cheer).

Frequently asked questions

Where is the gay area in San Juan?

Santurce, on and around Calle Condado and Avenida Fernández Juncos, holds most of the gay bars and clubs. The gay beach is in Condado at the end of Calle Vendig. Old San Juan has one queer bar, La Sombrilla Rosa.

What is the best gay club in San Juan?

For drag, Kweens Klub; for dancing until dawn, Toxic; for something harder, SX The Club. Bears go to El Purgatorio on Friday and Saturday nights.

Is there a lesbian bar in San Juan?

One directory lists Atrévete Bar & Café in Hato Rey as Puerto Rico's lesbian bar, but we found only a single source and couldn't confirm it. LadyBugBar, El Local and La Sombrilla Rosa draw mixed queer crowds.

Is Old San Juan the gay neighbourhood?

No. It is where many visitors stay, and it has La Sombrilla Rosa, but the gay nightlife moved to Santurce years ago. Older guides that call Calle Fortaleza the gay strip are out of date.
