Last verified: October 2026. San Juan has what almost no other city in this series has: a gay-owned hotel standing directly on a gay beach. The Tryst Beachfront, the old Atlantic Beach Hotel at the end of Calle Vendig in Condado, has been owned since 2023 by the man behind the Abbey in West Hollywood and the PrEP service MISTR, and its Sunday drag brunch spills onto the sand that has been the island's gay beach since the 1960s. Fifteen minutes east, in the quiet residential grid of Ocean Park, a gay couple run the only two clothing-optional guesthouses in Puerto Rico across the street from each other. That is the whole gay-owned list; everything else is a Condado resort, an Ocean Park guesthouse with a pool, or an Old San Juan convent, all of them friendly in the American way. This guide measures each from the Tryst and the Santurce bars, says who is gay and who is merely nice, who changed (the Atlantic Beach is the Tryst; four hotels wrongly archived are back; the Circo Bar never reopened), what Pride 2026 looked like and when 2027 is, the Bear Weekend and the Atlantis sailing, the 9 or 11 per cent room tax and the resort fees, the three anti-LGBTQ laws of 2025–26 and what they do and do not touch, the 2026 murder spike near the bar strip, the drought, the grid, and where PEP is at three in the morning.

Where to sleep, in real minutes
Our listings carry a "nearest gay venue" line and a distance to the computed centre of the scene, which in San Juan falls between the Condado beach and the Santurce bars and is roughly right. Multiply by 1.3 and divide by 80 for walking minutes. The city has three gay poles a kilometre apart and the sun makes a kilometre feel like two; Uber is US$6–10 between any of them.
The beach pole. The gay beach is the stretch of Condado sand at the end of Calle Vendig and Calle Earle, bounded by the stone jetty, in front of the Tryst; it fills on Sunday afternoons when the drag brunch ends and the speakers come out. Oasis Tapas & Lounge on Condado Avenue, the old Splash, is 100 metres away: tapas by day, drag and DJs at night, Blackout Mondays. The Tryst is 94 metres from the sand; the Marriott is 76 metres from Oasis; Canario Boutique 250; O:Live and the Vanderbilt 330 metres from the beach, O:LV 380, the Ocean Club 490, La Concha 1.1 kilometres west along Ashford, the Caribe Hilton 1.3.
The bar pole. Santurce, a kilometre south of Ashford across the Fernández Juncos and Ponce de León avenues: Toxic at 613 Calle Condado (two floors, drag, dancers), SX The Club at 1204 Constitución (two floors, dark room, go-gos, the hardcore one), El Purgatorio on Calle del Carmen (the bear bar, open since December 2023), Kweens Klub at 1211 Fernández Juncos (drag cast every Friday), Tía María's Liquor Store on De Diego (one of the oldest gay bars on the island, pool tables and the strongest pours in town), LadyBugBar in the Hotel San Jorge on Ponce de León, and Xteamworks at 1752 Fernández Juncos, a multi-level men's play space with cabins and dark rooms, no steam, US$20, weekend evenings. La Placita, the market square that becomes an open-air street party on Friday and Saturday nights, is ten minutes from all of them. The Looking Glass is 150 metres from LadyBugBar and 700 from the rest; the Conturce ten minutes; the Tryst and Condado hotels twelve to twenty minutes on foot by day, and an Uber after midnight, for reasons set out under Safety.
Ocean Park. A gated residential grid with the island's widest city beach, 1.1 to 1.3 kilometres east of the Tryst, fifteen minutes' walk along the sand or Calle Loíza. Numero Uno and Dreamcatcher are 650 metres from the beach's centre, the OMERO 760, the Firehouse 960, Coqui del Mar 1,030 (both are two or three minutes from the sand at their own end), La Botánica, Acacia and At Wind Chimes about 1.1 kilometres. The beach itself is local and mixed, kite-surfers and families, with no defined gay section; the gay beach is Condado.
Old San Juan and Hato Rey. La Sombrilla Rosa on San Sebastián is the queer bar of the old city, 200 metres from El Convento and La Terraza; Mike's Bar and Macarena face each other on Eleanor Roosevelt in Hato Rey, a Tren Urbano ride south. Both are a US$10–15 Uber from Condado.

Gay-owned, gay-popular, or merely friendly: the honest list
The Tryst Beachfront Hotel, 1 Calle Vendig, Condado. The Atlantic Beach Hotel opened in the 1960s and was the Caribbean's gay hotel for thirty years, its oceanfront deck tea dance the reason this strip of sand is gay. It faded in the 2010s, was renamed the Tryst, and in June 2023 was bought by Tristan Schukraft, the founder of MISTR, owner of the Abbey in West Hollywood, the Tryst in Puerto Vallarta and the Fire Island Pines commercial district, with a stated plan to make Condado "the centre of LGBTQ life on the island" and a US$6 million renovation that has proceeded with the hotel open. What you get in 2026: 36 ocean-view rooms and a two-bedroom penthouse (booking sites count more because the group also owns a small apartment building), the Wicked Lily beach bar and restaurant, a gym and terrace, loungers on the sand, no pool and no parking, and a Sunday drag brunch that is the social event of the gay week. Guests are mixed. Reviews praise the location and staff and complain about small rooms, bar noise and uneven housekeeping. US$170–210 most of the year, US$280 and up on peak dates, no resort fee found. The tea-dance branding you may read about belongs to the Vallarta hotel; here it is brunch and the beach.
Coqui del Mar, 2218 Calle General del Valle, Ocean Park. Gay-owned by Rob and Vianney, adults only, LGBTQ-welcoming, 420-friendly in designated outdoor areas, and clothing-optional across the whole ground floor including both pools and the jacuzzi; rooftop deck, gym, bikes and beach gear, continental breakfast, units from poolside studios to a beach villa, two minutes from the sand. The calendar makes it: a clothing-optional barbecue every Saturday, a catered one on Mondays, weekend brunches, Bear Week in February, a Fetish & Flow weekend, Sober September, and Winter Pride in the second week of December (10–14 December 2026 as listed). Reviews in 2026 split between people who loved the pool society and people who found the rooms tired, with one cockroach complaint. Rates by direct enquiry with a best-price guarantee. The Firehouse Guesthouse across the street at 2217 is the same owners' smaller, newer, solar-powered sister: adults only, queer, clothing-optional on the first floor and in the private backyard (not in public view), shared pool and gym, three minutes to the beach, and no access to Coqui's facilities. These two are the only clothing-optional accommodation in Puerto Rico; there is no men-only house.
Ocean Park, gay-popular. Numero Uno Beach House (1 Calle Santa Ana, a 1940s whitewashed house on the sand, a pool with a swim-up bar, nine to twelve rooms, scores above 9, from about US$200) is the guesthouse the guidebooks have recommended for twenty years and gay guests fill without it saying so. Dreamcatcher (adults only, antiques, vegetarian breakfast, yoga), La Botánica (eight rooms, adults only), Acacia and At Wind Chimes (sister hotels a block apart, pools, mid-range), Tres Palmas (oceanfront on Park Boulevard, small pools and jacuzzis) and the OMERO (ten rooms, self check-in) fill out the grid; La Botánica, OMERO and the Looking Glass were wrongly archived in our listings and are back.
Condado. O:LV Fifty Five and O:Live are the adults-only boutiques a block behind Ashford with plunge pools, five minutes from the Tryst, US$280–400. The Condado Vanderbilt (1919, restored, infinity pool, about US$430 plus a resort fee of a fifth of the rate), La Concha (the 1958 modernist shell, casino, US$360–400), the Marriott (beachfront, casino, the Noche de San Juan party on 23 June) and the Condado Ocean Club (adults only, rooftop pool on the lagoon) are the resorts; the Condado Plaza is being split into a Curio hotel and a Hilton Garden Inn, with the timing unclear. Canario Boutique on Ashford is the cheap one, with construction-noise complaints in 2026.
Elsewhere. The Looking Glass on Ponce de León is the Santurce arts-district boutique, rated 9.2, the bed for people who are here for the bars. Hotel El Convento (a 1651 Carmelite convent, rooftop plunge pool, named the best historic hotel in America in 2025) and its sister Palacio Provincial are the Old San Juan choices; La Terraza on Calle del Sol the cheaper one. The Caribe Hilton (1949, the piña colada, its own cove), the Fairmont El San Juan (1958, the chandelier lobby, a resort fee over US$100) and the Hyatt Centric (opened December 2025 in the old Verdanza, 223 rooms) are the resort tier, all a cab from the gay beach. The Conturce Hostel on Calle Loíza (rooftop, an all-male dorm, few bathrooms) and the Nomada in Isla Verde are the budget beds. misterb&b has dozens of private rentals at US$60–120 a room.
Who changed
The Atlantic Beach Hotel is the Tryst, same building, same beach, new owner since 2023; our old Atlantic Beach listing points to it. Circo Bar, the Santurce club that was firebombed after reopening post-María in 2017 and closed around 2020, was bought by the Tryst's owner in 2023 with a promised reopening that has not happened. Zal Si Puedes in the Hotel San Jorge became LadyBugBar. Splash Lounge became Oasis. Opened: El Purgatorio (December 2023), the Firehouse (2024–25), the Hyatt Centric (December 2025); a Hampton and Homewood Suites in the convention district and a Nobu in Old San Juan (2028) and a Hard Rock (2029) are coming. Restored to our listings: the Looking Glass, La Terraza, La Botánica, OMERO. Added: eleven hotels from Dreamcatcher to the Fairmont.

Rules, fees and bringing someone back
Entry and money. Puerto Rico is the United States: no passport for Americans, ESTA or a US visa for everyone else, dollars, and an agriculture check on the way out. Room tax is 9 per cent at hotels and guesthouses, 11 per cent at hotels with casinos (La Concha, the Vanderbilt, the Marriott, the Caribe Hilton, the Fairmont), 7 per cent on short-term rentals, plus resort fees of US$25–55 at most Condado and Isla Verde resorts and more at the Fairmont; the Tryst, Coqui and the Ocean Park guesthouses charge none. Sales tax is 11.5 per cent. The drinking age is 18. High season is December to April, with Condado rates 1.3 to 1.8 times summer; the Bad Bunny residency made summer 2025 the busiest ever and summer 2026 cheaper by comparison; Christmas to the San Sebastián street festival (21–24 January 2027) is the long holiday and the full one.
Visitors. American rules: registered guests only at the resorts, nobody charging for a visitor, the desk asking for ID if it notices. Coqui and the Firehouse are adults-only houses with a community feel and discourage unregistered guests. For reasons under Safety, meet in public first.
Cannabis and drinking. Medical only; dispensaries accept out-of-state medical cards; consumption only in private, which the Coqui and Firehouse 420 areas are. Drinking in the street is technically banned outside designated zones and tolerated in practice on Condado beach (no glass) and at La Placita and SanSe; never in a car.
Your rights. Marriage since 2015, joint adoption since 2018, a hate-crime law covering sexual orientation and gender identity since 2002, an X gender marker since a June 2025 court ruling. Under Governor Jenniffer González the legislature has gone the other way: a July 2025 law bans gender-affirming care for anyone under 21, a religious-freedom law that critics (the LGBTQ+ Federation, Ricky Martin) say licenses refusals of service, and a 2026 law banning gender-neutral bathrooms in public buildings and the university; the ACLU counted eight anti-LGBTQ bills since January 2025, three enacted. None of them regulates hotels, bars or beaches, and in Condado and Santurce you will not feel them. Trans visitors should know the bathroom law applies in government buildings, not in hotels.
Pride, Bear Weekend, Atlantis and the weeks that matter
San Juan Pride: expected Sunday 6 June 2027 (to be confirmed; the 2026 march, the 36th, was Sunday 7 June). The parade leaves Parque del Indio in Condado at 11 a.m., runs the length of Ashford Avenue past the Tryst and ends with a festival at Parque del Tercer Milenio on Escambrón beach; the organiser is the Colectivo Orgullo Arcoíris and the 2026 theme was "Dignity, Memory and Struggle". Sleep in Condado to walk to it. Boquerón Pride in Cabo Rojo, three hours west, follows the next weekend and drew 40,000 in 2025.
San Juan Bear Weekend, 11–15 February 2027, based at El Purgatorio and Kweens with a Coqui del Mar package. Atlantis sails the Valiant Lady from San Juan on 27 March 2027 for a week to Curaçao, Aruba, Antigua and St Maarten, which fills Condado the nights before and after. The Puerto Rico Queer Filmfest is late May at Fine Arts Miramar (21–27 May in 2026). Noche de San Juan, 23 June, puts the whole city on the beach at midnight falling backwards into the sea. Winter Pride at Coqui del Mar is the second week of December. Hurricane season is June to November; 2025 brought Erin past the north coast with floods and a day of cancellations, 2026 brought nothing by late October; the drought of 2026 was the worse story, with the driest July on record and rotating 48-hour water rationing for parts of San Juan from August, so ask a small guesthouse about its cistern. The grid remains the grid: island-wide blackouts on New Year's Eve 2024 and in April 2025, a government lawsuit to remove the operator, generators at every resort and most guesthouses, and a power bank in your bag.

Three picks per budget
Under US$150. Conturce Hostel for Calle Loíza and the Santurce bars; Canario Boutique for a Condado room 250 metres from Oasis; La Terraza for Old San Juan.
US$170–300. The Tryst for the gay hotel on the gay beach; Coqui del Mar or the Firehouse for the naked pool; Numero Uno for Ocean Park done properly.
US$350 and up. Condado Vanderbilt for the grand hotel ten minutes from the beach; El Convento for the convent; O:LV Fifty Five for adults-only Condado.
Getting in late and getting around
SJU to Condado or Ocean Park: the fixed-zone taxi is about US$20 (US$17 plus the airport fee, plus a dollar a bag), Uber US$12–25, Old San Juan about US$25, fifteen to twenty-five minutes. In town: Uber is the transport; the Tren Urbano (US$1.50 since January 2026) runs from Santurce's Sagrado Corazón south to Hato Rey and Bayamón and reaches neither the beach, the old city nor the airport; the AMA buses are 75 cents and slow; the Cataño ferry is 50 cents to the Bacardí distillery. Culebra and Vieques ferries leave from Ceiba, an hour east, and the non-resident fare rose in May 2026 to about US$11 each way; book ahead or fly. Parking in Condado is scarce and the Tryst has none.
Safety, honestly. Puerto Rico recorded its fewest murders in forty years in 2025 and then reversed in 2026, up about a fifth by midyear, and at least three tourists were killed in San Juan in the first two months of the year, one of them shot leaving a nightclub at Parada 18 in Santurce, which is the Fernández Juncos strip where Kweens and SX stand. Inside the bars you are fine; walking Fernández Juncos or Ponce de León alone at 3 a.m. you are not. Uber door to door after midnight, phone away on the street, nothing left on the sand at Ocean Park, La Perla by day on the main paths and never after dark. Police are neutral toward gay visitors. No dating-app robbery pattern has surfaced in Puerto Rico in 2025–26; the usual rule, meet in public first, still applies.

Health
PEP within 72 hours at any emergency room: Ashford Presbyterian at 1451 Ashford Avenue in Condado is the hotels' hospital, ten minutes from the Tryst; Auxilio Mutuo in Hato Rey is the big private one. By day, Centro Ararat (700 Calle Dr Manuel Pavía in Santurce, walk-in weekdays, 787-496-0818; and 1503 Calle Augusto Rodríguez by appointment) does free HIV testing, PrEP for the uninsured, PEP, doxy-PEP and the free mpox vaccine; Coaí on Eleanor Roosevelt in Hato Rey does free testing and PrEP navigation beside Mike's Bar. MISTR, the Tryst owner's telehealth service, posts PrEP to Puerto Rico. The 2024 dengue emergency ended in December 2025 and 2026 has stayed below the epidemic line; use repellent at dusk. Tap water is treated but the 2026 drought brought boil advisories; drink bottled when in doubt.
San Juan in a paragraph
The first Pride march walked from Luis Muñoz Rivera Park to Puerta de Tierra on 13 June 1991 behind the trans activist Christina Hayworth, whose portrait with Sylvia Rivera hangs in the Smithsonian; the Atlantic Beach Hotel's Sunday tea dance made Condado's sand gay before most of its guests were born; Pedro Julio Serrano has argued every bill since the 2020 Civil Code; Ricky Martin came out here and Bad Bunny wore Alexa's name on American television after her murder in 2020 and then sold out thirty nights in 2025 with a show called "I don't want to leave here". The city is a Spanish fort, a Miami strip, a Caribbean beach and a Latin American capital in a 10-kilometre line, with mofongo, Medalla, the piña colada invented at the Hilton in 1954, murals on every wall of Santurce since the street-art festival of 2010, and a grid that still remembers Hurricane Maria. Come for Pride in June, Bear Weekend in February, or any week from December to April with a power bank and a sunhat.
