Lake Worth Beach, Florida: The Honest 2026 LGBTQ+ Guide
The honest summary: Lake Worth Beach (it was simply Lake Worth until voters renamed it in 2019) is a town of about 43,000 people between West Palm Beach and Boynton Beach, and it punches well above its size for queer life in Palm Beach County. It has one gay bar, the Mad Hatter Lounge; the county's LGBTQ+ community center, Compass, which has been here since 1992; and Palm Beach Pride, which fills Bryant Park every March. It does not have a gay club strip, a bathhouse or a gay beach. For a big night out, people drive south to Wilton Manors and Fort Lauderdale, about an hour away.
Legal in one line: same-sex marriage is legal in Florida, but the state has passed a string of anti-LGBTQ+ laws since 2022 (school curriculum limits, a bathroom law, a ban on gender-affirming care for minors and a drag-show law that federal courts have partly blocked), and Equality Florida has kept a travel advisory in place since 2023. Lake Worth Beach itself went the other way: in September 2023 its commission voted 4-0 to declare the city an LGBTQ+ sanctuary city, which local press described as a first for Florida.
What the scene looks like now
We checked Travel Gay, GayCities, OutSFL (South Florida's LGBTQ+ paper), WPTV, New Times and Google Maps, in English and Spanish. They agree on a short list.
- Mad Hatter Lounge, 1532 N Dixie Hwy. OutSFL called it "the only LGBTQ bar in Lake Worth" in May 2025, and Travel Gay lists it as one of the last gay bars left in Palm Beach County. It's a neighborhood bar with pool tables, a patio and themed nights; Travel Gay lists Leather Night on Sundays and Thirsty Thursdays. It's open daily from noon to 2am, about a mile north of downtown, so drive or take a ride app.
- Propaganda, 6 S J St. A downtown live-music bar just off Lake Avenue, not a gay bar, but it hosts Dyke Night, a burlesque, drag and live-music party for queer women and friends that went monthly in June 2026 (OutSFL). New Times once described it as one of the area's best-known gay clubs.
- Compass Community Center, 201 N Dixie Hwy. Founded in 1992, Compass runs HIV testing, a sexual-health and PrEP clinic with CAN Community Health, support groups, trans support and a youth drop-in on weekday afternoons. Listed hours are Monday to Thursday 9am to 8pm, Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 2pm to 6pm.
Downtown Lake Worth Beach is the stretch of Lake Avenue and Lucerne Avenue (a one-way pair) between Dixie Highway and the Intracoastal, with restaurants, bars, galleries and the Lake Worth Playhouse. Some downtown places openly back Pride and host the odd drag event, but we only list venues with a regular queer night.
Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
- The Bar, 2211 N Dixie Hwy: closed. Yelp still files it under gay bars.
- Penny's at the Duke, 902B N Dixie Hwy: closed after eight years (WPTV). It was in Lantana, not Lake Worth Beach, despite the Lake Worth mailing address on old listings.
- H.G. Rooster's is still open, but it's in West Palm Beach (823 Belvedere Rd), about 5 miles north, not in Lake Worth Beach.
Palm Beach Pride
Palm Beach Pride is organized by Compass and has been held since 1992. It's in Bryant Park, on the Intracoastal at the east end of Lake Avenue, on the last weekend of March: 29-30 March 2025 and 28-29 March 2026, noon to 6pm both days. The parade is on Sunday at 11am and loops through downtown on Lucerne and Lake Avenues to the park. Compass lists the 2027 edition as "March, dates TBA"; exact dates were not announced at the time of writing. The Mad Hatter has hosted kick-off and wrap-up parties. The city also flies the Pride flag at City Hall in June.
Where to stay
There is no gay guesthouse in Lake Worth Beach. The two small bed and breakfasts near Bryant Park, Sabal Palm House (109 N Golfview Rd) and Mango Inn (128 N Lakeside Dr), are the most practical base: both are a short walk from Lake Avenue, Propaganda and the Pride site. Purple Roofs lists Sabal Palm House as gay-friendly. Most other options are budget motels on Dixie Highway and Federal Highway (US-1), which you'll want a car for. Book early for Pride weekend.
- Air: the nearest airport is Palm Beach International, renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport in July 2026; its code changed from PBI to DJT in August 2026. It's about 7 miles north of downtown, roughly 15 minutes by car. Fort Lauderdale (FLL) is about 45 miles south.
- Rail: Tri-Rail's Lake Worth Beach station is at 1703 Lake Worth Rd, west of downtown, with trains to West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Miami.
- Car: I-95 runs along the west side of town. Downtown and the area around Bryant Park are walkable; the Mad Hatter, the motels and the beach across the bridge are easier with a car or a ride app.
Practical tips
- Pride weekend is the one time the town fills up. Outside it, the gay bar is a quiet local place, so check its social pages for themed nights before you go.
- The municipal beach and pier are across the Intracoastal bridge at the end of Lake Avenue. It's a regular public beach, not a gay beach.
- Compass is the best place to ask about current groups, events and sexual-health services. Its HIV and PrEP clinic is in the same building.
- For a club night, Wilton Manors (Fort Lauderdale) is about an hour south and has the largest concentration of gay bars in South Florida.
