Gay Sioux Falls: The Honest 2026 Guide

The honest summary: Sioux Falls is South Dakota's biggest city, about 225,000 people by the city's own 2025 estimate, and it has one LGBTQ+ nightclub, one LGBTQ+ community center and one large Pride day in June. Club David on West 10th Street is the bar. Prism Community Center, run by The Transformation Project, is the community space. Sioux Falls Pride fills a downtown parade route and Yankton Trail Park on the second Saturday of June. Beyond that, queer life here happens in mainstream downtown bars and restaurants and in private circles. There is no gay neighbourhood, no sauna and no second gay bar.

Legal in one line: Same-sex marriage is legal across the US, but South Dakota has no state law protecting people from discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, and Sioux Falls has no city ordinance either. Recent state laws restrict trans people's use of bathrooms in schools and state buildings (HB 1259, in force since July 2025) and define sex as biological in state and city law (HB 1184, in force since July 2026).

Where Sioux Falls is

Sioux Falls sits in the far southeast corner of South Dakota, close to the Minnesota and Iowa borders, on Central Time. Downtown wraps around the Big Sioux River and Falls Park, the series of pink quartzite waterfalls that gave the city its name. Phillips Avenue is the main downtown street, with the SculptureWalk statues, restaurants and bars. Outside downtown the city spreads out along the interstates, and you will want a car or a rideshare.

Sioux Falls Regional Airport (FSD) is about 4 miles northwest of downtown and has direct flights to a handful of hubs, including Minneapolis, Chicago, Denver and Dallas. By road, Omaha is about 3 hours south and Minneapolis about 4 hours northeast.

Club David: the one LGBTQ+ nightclub

Club David is at 214 West 10th Street, a block west of Phillips Avenue. Out x Out lists it as South Dakota's only LGBTQ+ nightclub, and Google reviewers describe it as the city's gay bar. It hosts the drag bingo and the drag and burlesque shows on Pride weekend (Sioux Falls Live). It has three levels. Google lists it as open Tuesday to Sunday from 4pm to 2am and closed on Mondays. It rates 4.3 from about 150 Google reviews, which most often praise the dance floor and the staff.

Club David changed hands in 2022, when the Ballard Building group behind Parker's Bistro, DaDa Gastropub and Icon Lounge bought the building. SiouxFalls.Business reported in June 2025 that the owners had spent a year renovating it. A kitchen opened in January 2025, serving food from 5pm to 9pm. The building now has a lower-level speakeasy, an upstairs bar with a patio and concerts on the main floor. That article says nothing about the bar's LGBTQ+ side, and the weekly programme now mixes music nights with queer nights. We couldn't confirm a fixed weekly drag schedule. If you want a drag night specifically, check the club's Facebook or Instagram before you go.

Prism Community Center and the groups

The Transformation Project is a trans support nonprofit founded in 2019. In October 2023 it opened Prism Community Center, which Dakota News Now described as South Dakota's only LGBTQ2S+ community center. Google lists it at 500 North Western Avenue, Suite 300, with drop-in hours on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons and on Friday evenings. Earlier listings split the evenings between youth and adult sessions, so check transformationprojectsd.org for the current schedule. The Transformation Project also runs Marty's Closet, a free clothing closet, and the Rainbow Run fundraiser.

Sioux Falls Pride (siouxfallspride.org) is the volunteer group behind the June festival. It was founded in 2000 as The Center for Equality and later took the Pride name. Equality South Dakota (eqsd.org) does statewide advocacy. For HIV testing, PrEP and support, the main options are the Heartland Health Resource Center, Sanford's infectious disease clinic and the state health department's free testing office. Planned Parenthood on West 41st Street also offers sexual health services.

Pride: second Saturday of June

Sioux Falls Pride is a single day, usually the second Saturday of June. The 2026 edition took place on 13 June. The parade set off at 10am down Phillips Avenue from 14th Street to the Levitt Shell. The festival ran from noon to 5pm in Yankton Trail Park with vendors, food trucks and an all-ages drag show, and Dakota News Now put the crowd at close to 10,000. The 2025 edition marked the organisation's 25th year and used an 8th Street route. The city held South Dakota's first Pride parade in June 2019. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing. If the usual pattern holds it would be 12 June 2027, but wait for siouxfallspride.org to confirm it.

Club David runs its own events on Pride weekend, and touring drag shows play the Orpheum Theater Center downtown. Alaska Thunderf*ck's tour is booked there for April 2027.

Closed or changed: gone but still Googled

- Club David: same name, but new owners since 2022 and a new layout since 2025, with a kitchen, a speakeasy and a concert floor. Older reviews describe a simpler dance bar.
- The Center for Equality: no longer a separate centre. It is the old name of Sioux Falls Pride.
- Older versions of this guide called Pride a July event and pointed to "inclusive breweries" without naming any. Pride is in June, and we only list places we have a source for.

Mainstream places with a queer following

Out x Out lists a handful of allied downtown spots. None of them are gay bars:
- Full Circle Book Co-op on West 10th Street, a co-operative bookstore that also holds events.
- DaDa Gastropub and Icon Lounge, which have the same owners as Club David and often host Pride events.
- Wiley's and The Hello Hi on the main downtown strip.
Treat them as friendly rather than queer, and expect a mixed crowd.

Where to stay

There are no LGBTQ+ guesthouses in Sioux Falls, so pick by location. The Canopy by Hilton on East 4th Place and the Country Inn & Suites on East 8th Street are both within walking distance of Phillips Avenue, Falls Park and Club David. The Historic Twin Tudors Inn on South Main Avenue is a small inn in two older houses south of downtown. The chain hotels on the south and east sides, such as the Hyatt Place on Lake Shore Boulevard and the GLō Best Western at Dawley Farms, are cheaper but you'll need a car.

Practical tips

- Friday and Saturday are the busiest nights at Club David. Tuesday to Thursday can be very quiet.
- Bars in South Dakota close at 2am. The city buses don't run late, so plan a rideshare home.
- Downtown hotels fill up on Pride Saturday, so book early if you're coming in June.
- During the day: Falls Park and its observation tower, the SculptureWalk on Phillips Avenue, the Old Courthouse Museum and the free summer concerts at the Levitt Shell.
- Winters are long and cold, with January lows often far below freezing. The scene is quieter from December to March.

A few words

English is spoken here, but Lakota, Dakota and Nakota place names are all over the state. Many Native LGBTQ+ people in the Plains call themselves "Two-Spirit", which is where the 2S in Prism's LGBTQ2S+ comes from.
