XLSIOR Mykonos
Gay circuit festival — the biggest in the Mediterranean
international, predominantly male, famously gym-honed
by Anastasios Kapetanias
The story
XLSIOR (say "excelsior") started in 2009 when Anastasios Kapetanias figured out something the circuit world hadn't said out loud yet: the boys will pay a serious premium, as long as the production looks like a stadium show under open sky instead of a foam party in a basement. Mykonos already had the gay travelers, the beaches, and the mythology — he added the spectacle. Seventeen years later, 30,000 people descend on a small Greek island every August, and XLSIOR closes Europe's circuit season the way a headliner closes a festival.
The vibe (and who you'll be dancing next to)

via Stay22The see-and-be-seen festival. The crowd is aggressively international — Americans, Brazilians, Italians, Spaniards, Australians, half of Tel Aviv — and famously fit; regulars joke that training for XLSIOR starts in February, and they're only half joking. The shows lean Greek-mythology-with-thirst, the DJs are circuit royalty (Offer Nissim, Tom Stephan, Ben Bakson, Nina Flowers have all headlined), and yes, at some point you will be dancing on a cliff while the sun drops into the Aegean and briefly forgetting what you paid to be there.
What it isn't: intimate, underground, or cheap. If your scene is a dark Berlin basement, this is the exact opposite pole — sun, sequins, and unapologetic Instagram-era glamour. And unlike a one-night circuit party, XLSIOR is a five-day rhythm: pool party, sunset, main event till sunrise, repeat.
"The first-timer mistake is trying to make every party. Do the afternoon pool party AND the main event that starts at 2am and ends at sunrise, and by day three you're in your room on a drip. Pick one big party per day, and sleep like it's your job."
— Alon, 32, Tel Aviv (four XLSIORs deep)
Where it happens: day vs. night
Mykonos is geographically confusing and the festival is scattered, so here's the actual map logic. The center of gravity is the Paradise / Super Paradise beach strip on the south coast — not Mykonos Town.
Day parties — the Super Paradise strip
- Jackie O' Beach Club — the daytime social HQ; swimwear, pools, drag shows at dusk
- Noia (the former Super Paradise Club site) — beach-club productions
Night parties — two zones
- The big rooms around Paradise Beach, headlined by the legendary cliff-top Cavo Paradiso — this is where the midnight-to-sunrise main events live
- Boutique in-town options in Chora (old town) like Pelekanos — the first-half-of-the-night stop before the beach
The Mykonos transport nightmare (and how to survive it)

via Stay22Let's be blunt, because nobody official will be: this island has roughly 40 licensed taxis. The festival brings 30,000 people. That math is the number-one misery of every XLSIOR week, and it ruins more nights than hangovers do. Your survival kit:
- Sea shuttles are the cheat code. Water taxis run from the old port and from Ornos beach straight to the party beaches — you skip the road entirely while the taxi queue watches you leave. This is also why Ornos is the smart place to sleep.
- Buy the festival shuttle wristband on day one. XLSIOR runs dedicated buses between town and the venues; the wristband is sold in advance/at the start and it's the difference between a 10-minute ride and a 90-minute negotiation at 5am. First thing you sort after check-in.
- Do not rent the ATV. Seriously. Every single year: exhausted, drunk, or both, on dark winding roads with no shoulders, and every single year people get badly hurt. The scooter-rental guys will smile at you; the island's clinic sees the results. Shuttles, boats, and shared transfers. That's the list.
Here for the week, skipping the passes? The no-ticket itinerary
A surprising share of gay travelers come during XLSIOR week without buying a single festival ticket — the whole island tilts gay for six days, and the free layer is genuinely great:
- 18:00 — sunset cocktail at Elysium (the classic) or Jackie O' Town on the waterfront
- 21:00 — dinner, then the old-town bar crawl through the alleys: Babylon, Porta, wherever the noise pulls you
- 01:00 — the free beach gatherings and smaller no-wristband parties; Super Paradise beach is the festival's unofficial free lobby all week
The real budget

via Stay22Count everything, not the pass: passes €300-400 standard and €1,000+ premium (tables run to thousands), hotels doubling or tripling for the week (€300-600/night for anything decent near the strip), €15-20 cocktails, and transport at island-premium rates. Honest all-in: €2,500-4,000+ per person. Book the bed the moment dates drop — Paradise/Platis Gialos sells out months ahead, and by July you're in Ornos-or-luck territory.
Where XLSIOR sits on your calendar: two weeks after Circuit Festival Barcelona; plenty of Europeans chain the two — Barcelona for scale, Mykonos for the setting.
