About Rebel Dykes

Rebel Dykes is a documentary about what happened when punk met feminism.

The film brings together the stories of a group of lesbians who lived, loved, organised, partied and created together in the riotous London of the 1980s. Their world brought together punk, feminism, queer sexuality, activism, nightlife and alternative culture.

Rather than presenting queer history as something distant or polished, Rebel Dykes explores it through the people who were there. As a result, the film offers a lively look at a radical lesbian community that challenged both mainstream society and expectations within feminist movements.

Punk, Feminism and Lesbian History

Queer history has never been one single story. Instead, it has been shaped by countless communities, movements, conflicts and experiments in living differently.

Rebel Dykes focuses on one particularly rebellious part of that history.

The documentary explores how lesbian communities created their own spaces and cultures during a politically turbulent period. At the same time, it looks at sex, friendship, art, protest and the politics of refusing to fit neatly into established categories.

Therefore, the film is not simply a history lesson. It is also a celebration of people who pushed boundaries and created new possibilities for queer life.

Sapphic Film Series at Villa Vida

The Sapphic Film Series creates space to watch and discuss films centred on sapphic stories, lesbian experiences, queer history and LGBTQIA+ culture.

Some films are cult classics. Others document histories that have received far too little mainstream attention. However, they all give us an opportunity to gather, watch something together and connect through queer cinema.

Whether you already know Rebel Dykes or are discovering the documentary for the first time, you are welcome to join us.

You can come alone, bring friends or meet new people at the café. Moreover, you do not need any previous knowledge of lesbian history, punk or feminist movements to take part.

Who Is Welcome?

Everyone who wants to engage respectfully with sapphic and queer cinema is welcome.

The Sapphic Film Series centres sapphic stories and experiences. However, you do not need to identify as sapphic, lesbian, bisexual or queer to attend.

Friends and allies are welcome too.

Above all, we ask everyone to help us maintain a respectful environment. Racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, biphobia, ableism and other forms of discriminatory or harassing behaviour are not welcome at Villa Vida Café.

Accessibility at Villa Vida Café

Villa Vida Café is an accessible queer community café in Vienna. The café space was remodelled with accessibility in mind and has a ramp at the Linke Wienzeile entrance. An accessible toilet is available on the ground floor. The indoor café is also fully non-smoking.

Seating is available during the screening. In addition, staff can assist where possible if you need support accessing the space.

Because this is a film screening, the room will be darker during the film and the soundtrack will be played through the venue’s sound system.
