Rosa-Winkel-Mahnmal (Cologne)

On the Rhine promenade beneath the Hohenzollernbrücke, a few minutes' walk from the cathedral, stands a compact granite sculpture: a pink triangle clamped between grey wedges, inscribed "Totgeschlagen – Totgeschwiegen" — beaten to death, silenced to death. Unveiled on June 24, 1995, it is dedicated to the gay and lesbian victims of National Socialism — roughly 10,000 gay men were deported to concentration camps, more than half of whom were murdered — and it was only Germany's second such memorial, following Frankfurt's angel a year earlier. The site was chosen deliberately: this stretch of riverbank was for generations a discreet meeting place for gay men, so the memorial stands where the persecuted community actually lived its hidden life. What you see today: the memorial sits on one of Cologne's busiest walking routes, between the cathedral, the bridge full of love-locks and the river. It asks only a few minutes — read the inscription, note the pink stone held in the grey clamp, and continue along the Rhine. Cologne's enormous Pride (ColognePride/CSD) passes nearby each July, which is no accident.
