Thon Hotel Opera

Delicious breakfast, great service, within walking distance ti everything including greasy access to tram, train, and airport

The location is genuinely excellent — two minutes from the Opera House, right on the waterfront, and a short walk from Oslo Central Station. The room itself was comfortable and the bed was good. So far, so good. Unfortunately, that's largely where the positives end for our stay. We arrived to find the hotel in the middle of an ongoing staff strike that has apparently been running for over a month. Nobody mentioned this at booking, at check-in, or at any point before our arrival. The result? No housekeeping for our entire 3-night stay. No towel changes, no bathroom cleaning, no bins emptied. Guests were pointed to trolleys in the corridor and expected to help themselves. We were travelling with our 6-month-old daughter — cleanliness isn't a luxury for us, it's a necessity. The gym was also closed — has been since April and won't reopen until September. Again, not a word about this on the listing. I understand strikes happen and renovations happen. What I don't understand is why a hotel that knew about both for weeks chose not to inform guests before arrival. That's a choice, and it's not a good one. Would I stay here again? Not until they sort out their communication with guests. At these prices, you'd expect better.

I stayed at Thon Hotel Opera from May 8–10 with a Gate 1 tour group and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience with one front desk employee. While taking a shower, I discovered the shampoo/shower gel dispenser in my room was empty. Since there was no phone in the room, I had to contact my tour manager to ask the front desk for assistance. I was told someone would bring the shower gel right away, but after waiting over 20 minutes with wet hair and wrapped only in a towel, no one ever came. I eventually had to get dressed and go downstairs myself. I understand staff shortages or strikes can happen, and mistakes happen too. What was unacceptable was the way the front desk employee handled the situation afterward. When I explained that I was upset no one followed through, she became defensive, rude, and spoke to me in a very unprofessional tone. She even responded, “Yes I can, and I have already apologized,” when I told her not to speak to guests that way. Her attitude throughout the interaction was cold, hostile, and disrespectful. I have traveled to more than 25 countries and stayed in many hotels, and I have never been treated this way by hospitality staff. This experience unfortunately left a very negative impression during an otherwise wonderful trip through Scandinavia, where I had encountered kind and warm people everywhere else. I hope management takes this matter seriously and improves customer service training for the front desk staff.

Location is absolutely great when coming by train to Oslo. Good food, nice staff.

Excellent location for those arriving via Oslo Central Station. This hotel is also close to other points of interest such as the Opera House. Shopping is also nearby.

STAYED during the hotel workers strike. No issues.
