Mercure St Pauls

The decor of the hotel is stylish. The room I had was big with a table and 2 chairs and a desk with a chair. Shower was very nice. Rainhead and handheld shower. Flooring totally non-slip. Handle on the wall. The bathroom was spotlessly clean. Only complaint was that the toilet flush was quite weak. Kettle and tea making facilities. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The food could have been better. The cooked breakfast was not very appetizing. I just had fruit and toast the second morning and it seemed like the same fruit had been put out for a second day.
The rooms used to be good when Mercure ran it. Even though the new voco rooms look good, they're not practical. There's no fridge which is not acceptable for a 4 star hotel. The rooms used to have extra comfy chairs and a tea table but thats gone. Also the table is narrower now. They dont have face tissues in the bathroom anymore.
I used to like the bar/restaurant and spa facilities. Since being taken over the hotel staff and spa facilities have gone down hill to say the least. Bar staff were all chatting in a corner and didn't notice i had been waiting for 10 mins, so i left. The spa facilities need a serious looking at. The experience shower barely works anymore, sauna has been broken for several weeks and the showers are really hit and miss. Such a shame, the staff at Spa Naturel are still lovely and helpful - such a shame the new management is a complete debacle.
Nice located hotel, previously known Mercure St Paul's, the hotel is now part of IHG. Reception, bar area and 5th floor have been renovated.
Lovely hotel. Great location. Really clean. However front of house staff really need some lessons in hospitality. Had several interactions with them each time leaving both unconvinced that the problem had been sorted, feeling respected or listened to. I appreciate that when I visited the hotel was under a take over and new systems where being applied. But none of this is my concern and certainly shouldn't have been asked to pay for a stay that had already been paid for. Then made to feel like a liar that we had booked an early check-in/ breakfast and late check out. Our friends paid then where told it would be 3-4 weeks to get a refund. Each day being told our breakfast had not been paid for this was totally unnecessary and unacceptable, professionalism from the hotel. At no point when we booked in did the front of house smile or welcome us nevermind apologise for the mistake on their side even though they acknowledge they where having problems with bookings transferring to the new system. This totally ruined what should have been a special weekend away. If you want to feel special when your paying your hard earned cash I would avoid. Could have booked a Premier Inn and properly been treated better such a shame. If the owners read this review I would strongly suggest investing in hospitality training for your front of house staff after all their the face of your company.
