I had the best lentils soup ever. And my first knafeh, which Moe topped with slivered almonds and a scoop of chocolate ice cream. Delicious.

Best dinner we have had in Israel. Mo was an incredible host. We shared three different traditional dishes that he recommended.

I have come to Israel on a mission from God: to be baptized where His Son was baptized and to understand, on a far greater scale, the truth of hearts and goodness among many in a world long plagued by hatred, violence, and arrogance regarding the values of others who proclaim their own greatness and superiority. This is a world meant to find peace through humble support and balance among all people. No one person is above another except in the place they put themselves within their own minds. This does not make them truly better; it makes them lesser, for they close their minds and hearts to what it really means to be one of God's children. Walking into this wonderful space, I knew God brought me here for several very specific reasons: 1. To feast upon the best lentil soup, flatbread, and salad I have ever had. Following a new dietary regimen based on the foods that Jesus ate while upon this earth, lentil soup has become a major part of it. To truly appreciate the flavor and style of the soups and stews from that time means immersing oneself in the traditional methods and seasonings behind them. This soup is a game changer. 2. To meet Mo, a wonderful chef and man with a generous and kind nature. His authenticity in every respect permeates his establishment, creating something of a “Cheers” feeling, if you know the classic American television show. 3. To gain greater knowledge and understanding of the history of Jerusalem, Israel, Jordan, and beyond. It took only a short time of reading, feasting, and brief exchanges to begin seeing all of this more clearly. 4. To acquire a deeper appreciation for the foods that bring people in this world closer together. These meals are steeped in tradition and heritage that pilgrims and food lovers alike will appreciate for exactly those reasons. My time in Jerusalem will surely include finding myself sitting in this wonderful little eatery, scarfing down some of the best food I have had in years while enjoying the array of books available to pore over. Sarwa Kitchen is a place you do not want to skip when stepping out from the Garden Tomb or wandering away from the market hungry for something satisfying. Many hotels are nearby, and it is only a short walk from them. There is also the added benefit of offering a variety of meal styles, from local cuisine to American dishes, for those just dipping their toes into a new culture's menu. Enjoy!
