About This Event

Recife’s Carnaval is a wild, free street party, nothing like Rio’s ticketed sambadrome show. It’s got a sound all its own, too: the frantic brass of frevo, with its acrobatic umbrella dancers, mixed with Afro-Brazilian maracatu rhythms.

Queer people have always been part of it. Explicitly queer blocos, or parade groups, have been around for decades. Carnaval’s general anything-goes vibe makes room for gender bending and queer expression, and the massive Galo da Madrugada—Guinness World Records says it’s the world’s largest Carnaval block, with over a million people—is famously inclusive. You’ll see queer people everywhere there.

Carnaval kicks off the days before Ash Wednesday, with the biggest parties happening Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. If you’re queer and visiting, you’ll want to be there by Friday to catch the run-up and peak days.

Meanwhile, in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Olinda, just next door, a different Carnaval happens. It’s smaller, more of an arts-community vibe, up in the hills above Recife. This is where the LGBTQ+ arts crowd goes to escape the bigger downtown events.
