Last verified: October 2026. Zipolite has two hotels that are gay in the strict sense, and both sit on the flat lanes behind the middle of the beach. Hotel Casa Nudista is gay-run and nudity is compulsory there. Hotel Men Zipolite is gay-owned, opened in January 2026 and is aimed at gay men. Up the hill at Arroyo Tres there is a cluster of small, adults-only, clothing-optional guesthouses, several of them gay-owned. Near the gay cove at the east end there is one LGBTQ-leaning B&B. The rest of the town is mixed nudist and gay-friendly beachfront hotels around Roca Blanca. There are no chain hotels and no ride-hailing apps, and the cash machines are unreliable. Lyoban, the long-running hostel, has gone, and Naked Zipolite now occupies its site. This guide covers which lane to sleep on, how long the walk home really is, who is genuinely gay-run, what the weekly pool parties and the spring Pride week mean for booking, and how to deal with a sea that kills people every year.

Where to sleep, in real minutes

Zipolite is one long bay. The white rock of Roca Blanca marks the west end and the rocks above Playa del Amor mark the east. From the hillside hotels at Arroyo Tres to the gay cove is about 1.8 km on foot. A paved beachside walkway, the Malecón (still called El Adoquín by most people), runs behind the sand along the western half. The coast road from Puerto Ángel to Mazunte runs behind the village. The bars gay men actually use form a tight knot a block or two back from the beach on the western-central stretch. ChiZme is on Callejón Privada Huisache off Calle Mangle, SINnombre is on Avenida Roca Blanca, and Chavela del Mar is on Andador Tabachín. La Máxima is a palapa on the sand off Avenida Palma Real. All four are within 2–3 minutes of each other. If you can walk to that knot in under 5 minutes on flat ground, you are in the right place. Anything else is a trade-off you should make on purpose.

The middle: Calle Mangle, Palma Rica and the bar knot

This is where the two gay hotels are, and it is the only part of town where "walk home from the bar" means 2 minutes. Casa Nudista is on Calle Mangle at the Roca Blanca end of the flat. By our listings it is 51 m from ChiZme, so 1–2 minutes, and the hotel says it is about 70 m from the beach. Men Zipolite is on Calle Palma Rica, 132 m from La Máxima (2–3 minutes) and 3–4 minutes from the ChiZme and SINnombre corner. Both hotels are noisy on their own party days. Casa Nudista holds a nude pool party every Saturday afternoon, and Men Zipolite runs a Friday afternoon pool party and a Sunday drag brunch. At night these lanes are short, flat and sandy in places, and some stretches are badly lit. Locals and visitors walk them at 3 am without fuss. Use your phone torch, watch for dogs, and don't carry more cash than you need.

Roca Blanca beachfront

West of the bar knot, the hotels sit directly on the sand facing Roca Blanca. Hotel Nude is 5–7 minutes from Chavela del Mar and 6–7 minutes from the bar knot. It is one of the biggest hotels in town, with about 42 rooms, and is clothing-optional with a mixed crowd that leans straight. One recent visitor complaint describes thumping music from it all day and into the evening. That matters if you take a room there or at Naked Zipolite next door. Naked Zipolite is clothing-optional and mixed, but more visibly gay-friendly, and it has hosted queer nights such as Horsemeat Disco and Por Detroit. It is not in our listings, so check its current event dates directly. El Alquimista, further west, is an adults-only spa hotel 8–10 minutes from the bars, and gay visitors like it. It is not a gay hotel, and its restaurant brings in a crowd of non-guests every sunset. La Providencia, up Calle Shambala, is the dinner reservation most people make once. The walk home from Roca Blanca is along the Malecón, which is the best-lit route in town.

Arroyo Tres: the hill

Past Roca Blanca the land climbs over the headland towards Playa Camarón (Bahía Camarón), a small cove with rock pools. This is where the gay-owned guesthouses are: El Guayacán on Calle Bugambilias, HEVEN Residence at Arcoíris 1, and Casa Sol & Maquil Villas at Arcoíris 6. The gay-friendly Villa Aikia and Casa KalMar are also on Calle Arcoíris. By our listings they are all 675–760 m from Chavela del Mar and 750–825 m from the bar knot, which works out at 12–15 minutes. That figure assumes a flat walk, and it isn't flat. The pedestrian route from the Malecón turns up Calle Las Casitas at the little square by La Mezcalería and climbs a long flight of stairs. Add 5 minutes going up, more in the midday heat. By car you go round on the highway and up dirt lanes. In return you get sea views, pools, nude sunbathing without being watched from the beach, and real quiet. The cost is the 3 am climb on uneven, dark steps. For a big night, have your host's taxi number in WhatsApp before you leave.

The east end, by Playa del Amor

Casa Playa del Amor on Calle Playa del Amor is 185 m (3–4 minutes) from the path down to Playa del Amor. That is the small cove over the rocks at the east end and the main gay beach. From there it is 15–17 minutes back along the village to the bars. The cove has gentler water than the open bay and is where the gay crowd gathers in the afternoon. Hotel Neptuno, a long-running adults-only beachfront hotel that has marketed itself as gay-friendly for years, is in the stretch between here and Men Zipolite. It is not in our listings. If you sleep at this end, the evening walk to the bars is fine. The walk back along the beach in the dark is the one to skip, so use the lanes.

Gay-owned, men-only and clothing-optional

Hotel Casa Nudista describes itself as gay, LGBT and straight-friendly, so it is gay-run but not men-only. Its rule is nudity: it is required in every common area, which no other hotel in town demands. It is adults-only with no pets, breakfast is included, and you can choose air-conditioned bungalows, glamping huts or a dorm. Non-guests can buy a day pass, listed at about MXN 150 (about US$8). The 100% nude pool party runs every Saturday from 2 pm to 8 pm by the hotel's own site (one listing says 1 pm), with house music. If you won't spend a long weekend naked in front of strangers, stay somewhere else.

Hotel Men Zipolite opened in January 2026 and is gay-owned and gay-run, with about 14 rooms, two larger suites and a 12-bunk dorm with lockers. It is clothing-optional. Some guides call it men-only, but we could not find that written as the hotel's own policy, so confirm before booking if it matters to you. In practice the crowd is almost all gay men. The restaurant (Cochon Rosé), pool and bar take non-guests, and the property allows pets. Listings put the average double at about MXN 3,000 (about US$165).

The hill. El Guayacán is gay-owned and gay-run, adults-only and clothing-optional. It has rooms, casitas with kitchens, a two-bedroom house and an infinity pool, and gay listings put the average at about MXN 4,800 (about US$265). HEVEN Residence opened in 2012 and was one of the first places on this coast to market itself mainly to queer men. It calls itself a naturist guesthouse and runs as an adults-only, clothing-optional B&B with about 8 apartments. Gay listings describe it as gay-owned with a mixed clientele. Casa Sol & Maquil Villas has 9 rooms at Casa Sol and 9 villas at Maquil, several with private pools. Our listings mark it as gay-owned, but we did not reconfirm that this season, so ask the owners directly. Gustavo's Place on Calle Bugambilia is a gay-owned guesthouse with 6 rooms and a rooftop plunge pool, at about MXN 700 (about US$40). It is not in our listings and enforces a no-visitors policy. Camp Zipolite (CAMP) on Calle Las Casitas is clothing-optional and hosts workshops during the nudist gathering. Its gay credentials are unverified.

Gay-friendly, not gay. Villa Aikia (adults-only, clothing-optional), Casa KalMar, Hotel Nude, Naked Zipolite, El Alquimista and Zipoliteville, a nudist hotel open to everyone, all welcome gay couples without any fuss. None of them is gay-run.

Gone. Lyoban, the old hostel on the Roca Blanca beachfront, has closed (year unverified), and Naked Zipolite runs on its site.

Booking rules that bite

    • Tax. Oaxaca charges a 3% lodging tax on the room price, and 16% IVA is added on top. Small guesthouses often quote prices that already include both, while OTAs sometimes add them at checkout. Ask for the total in pesos before you transfer anything.
    • Visitors. No joiner fees are common here, but each property sets its own rules. Gustavo's Place says no visitors at all. Casa Nudista sells a day pass and Men Zipolite opens its pool and bar to non-guests, so meeting someone by the pool is normal and nobody needs to sneak in. On the hill, ask before you bring a guest back, because these are small houses with shared pools. The simple fix is to book for 2 guests from the start if you might be sharing.
    • ID. Expect to show your passport at check-in. Nobody has reported routine ID checks on overnight guests, but small hosts may ask to see ID for anyone staying the night.
    • Cash. The main ATM is on the Malecón at Hotel Playa Zipolite, and cash machines in town are unreliable, with low withdrawal limits. Take out pesos at the airport. Cards work in most hotels until the power or internet drops.
    • Deposits and cancellation. Many small properties take bookings directly, by message or email. Get the deposit amount, the refund deadline and the nudity rules in writing.
    • Peak pricing. At Christmas, New Year and Holy Week, rates climb by roughly 30–50% and beds sell out. Gay hotels fill first, because there are so few of them.
    • No resort fees that we know of. Dorm beds and glamping are the real budget tier.

The gay calendar and where to book for it

Weekly (all season). Men Zipolite's pool party runs on Fridays from 1 pm to 6 pm with a DJ and free entry, and its drag brunch is on Sundays from 1 pm. Casa Nudista's nude pool party is on Saturday afternoons. La Máxima runs drag shows in high season, roughly December to April. ChiZme is reported as nude-only after 8 pm, with a crowd that is almost entirely gay men. In practice the weekend runs from Friday to Sunday, and the two gay hotels are booked around it.

Christmas and New Year 2026–27. This is the peak for Mexican and foreign visitors alike. If you have no room by early November, look at the hill or at San Agustinillo and Mazunte along the coast, and budget for taxis.

Festival Nudista Zipolite (Encuentro Nudista). Expected at the end of January 2027, but exact dates are TBA. The 2026 edition ran from 29 January to 1 February. It is a general nudist gathering, not a gay event. It opens with a calenda (parade) through town, followed by beach yoga, body painting and a night walk, at venues including Hotel Nude, El Alquimista, Posada México and Shambala. It fills the Roca Blanca beachfront first. If you want the gay hotels without the festival crowds, come a week either side.

Holy Week 2027 (Easter Sunday 28 March). Domestic crowds, families on the sand and full colectivos. Gay hotels hold up, but the beach and the roads are busier.

Zipolite Diverso (Pride). Not announced as of October 2026. It is a week-long Pride with events across town. The 2026 edition ran from 10 to 17 May, after 11–18 May in 2025 and 12–19 May in 2024, so a mid-May week in 2027 is likely but unconfirmed. Book Casa Nudista or Men Zipolite as soon as the organisers publish dates. With only two gay hotels in town, they go quickly.

Low season. Roughly June to October is hot and wet, with heavier surf. Prices drop and some small places close or reduce service, so check that yours is fully open.

Getting back at 3 am

From the airports. Huatulco (HUX) is about 65 km and roughly an hour away. The airport transfer price list starts at about MXN 1,890 (about US$105) to Zipolite, and a local guide quotes MXN 800–1,200 (about US$45–70) for taxis you arrange or negotiate yourself. The budget route is to cross to the highway outside the airport and take a bus towards Pochutla, then a colectivo (a shared pickup or taxi) to Zipolite for about MXN 15–40. This only works in daylight. Puerto Escondido (PXM) is a longer drive. Confirm the fare with your hotel and don't count on public transport after dark. Book your airport pickup through your hotel if you land late.

No Uber, no DiDi. No ride-hailing apps operate here. Taxis and colectivos run between Pochutla, Puerto Ángel, Zipolite, San Agustinillo and Mazunte, but they thin out late at night (exact last runs unverified). Save a driver's WhatsApp number from your host on the first day.

Walking home. Between the bars and the hotels on the flat (Casa Nudista, Men Zipolite, Roca Blanca) it is a short walk on the Malecón or the lanes behind it. The Malecón is the better lit of the two. Don't walk along the sand at night, and don't swim at night at all. The hillside hotels mean stairs and unlit dirt paths. After a long night, a taxi up the highway costs little and saves your ankles. The rocks around Playa del Amor are a long-standing cruising area around sunset and after dark. If you go, take only what you would not mind losing, and leave your passport and cards locked in your room.

Health, safety and the law

The sea is the danger. Zipolite has a powerful shore break and undertow, and part of the beach is known locally as "Playa de la Muerte". Lifeguard cover is patchy. One 2026 guide says there are none, while other visitors report flags and rescues. Stay in water shallow enough to stand in, never swim alone or drunk, and do your serious swimming in the calmer cove at Playa del Amor or in front of a staffed section. Reviewers in March 2026 reported witnessing several rescues in a single 10-day stay.

The law. Same-sex marriage is legal across Mexico, and federal law includes anti-discrimination protections. A gay couple asking for one bed will get one bed. The municipality formalised nudity on Playa Zipolite in 2016, and in 2024 the state congress declared it Oaxaca's only nudist beach. Nudity is optional on the sand, not required. Etiquette is to cover up on the streets and in shops away from the beach and the nudist hotels.

Sexual health. Zipolite has no sexual-health clinic. Pharmacies along the Malecón handle basic problems, and at least one offers 24-hour emergency service. For PEP, act within hours: Mexico's public HIV service centres (CAPASITS) and the hospital in Pochutla are the realistic options, but we could not confirm which coastal unit currently dispenses PEP to visitors. Bring your own PrEP and condoms, and keep your prescription with you.

Apps and dates. No dating-app robberies in Zipolite have been reported for 2025–2026 that we could find. That is not the same as saying none happened. Standard practice applies: meet first at a bar or by a pool, tell your hotel who is coming, and keep valuables in the safe.

Drugs and smoking. Mexico tolerates only tiny personal amounts of some drugs under federal health law. Buying and selling is a crime, and any police encounter in a small town gets expensive fast. Chemsex in a village with no hospital is a bad bet. Federal rules ban smoking in public places, and beaches are on the list. Vapes are banned from sale. Hotels set their own fines for smoking indoors.

Recent news. In February 2026, after alarming headlines and travel advisories, Oaxaca's tourism authorities said Zipolite was operating normally. Check your government's advisory for Oaxaca before you travel.

Three picks

Budget: Men Zipolite dorm. A bunk in the 12-bed dorm costs a fraction of a room. You are 2–3 minutes from La Máxima, and the Friday pool party and Sunday brunch happen in your own garden. If you want a private room for little money and don't need guests, Gustavo's Place on the hill is the alternative, at about MXN 700.

Mid-range: Casa Nudista. It is the one hotel in Mexico's nudist-beach town where everyone has actually taken their clothes off, and ChiZme is 1–2 minutes from the gate. Book it for the social pool, not for room comfort.

Splurge: El Guayacán. It is gay-owned, adults-only and clothing-optional, with an infinity pool above Playa Camarón and a 5.0 rating. Expect to pay about MXN 4,800 a night, and get a taxi home after the bars. A villa with a private pool at Maquil is the alternative, but confirm the current ownership and policies when you book.

Can I get an Uber from Huatulco airport?

No. There are no ride-hailing apps on this coast. Take the airport taxi (from about MXN 1,890), a pre-arranged driver, or the daytime bus to Pochutla and a colectivo on to Zipolite.
