The honest summary: Buffalo (278,349 people at the 2020 Census) has a small gay scene that has had a rough few years and is now rebuilding. Club Marcella, the big drag club, was shut by police in December 2023, and Cathode Ray, Q Bar, Roxy's and the Old Pink are gone too. What's left is three gay bars within walking distance of each other around Allentown: Fugazi, 26 and Underground Niteclub, which reopened in 2026 after eight years dark. Add a few queer party nights, a strong Pride parade on the first Sunday of June, and some of the best LGBTQ+ legal protections in the US. There's no gay sauna and no lesbian bar.
Legal in one line: Same-sex marriage has been legal in New York since 24 July 2011. GENDA (2019) bans discrimination on gender identity and expression, conversion therapy for minors was banned the same year, a 2023 shield law protects trans people and their doctors from out-of-state prosecution, and since 1 January 2025 the state constitution's Equal Rights Amendment covers sexual orientation and gender identity. The age of consent is 17.
Where the scene is
Allentown, the old arts district on Allen Street between Main Street and Elmwood Avenue, is Buffalo's gay neighbourhood, and every current source agrees on that. 26 is at the Main Street end of Allen, Fugazi on the corner of Franklin, and Nietzsche's, which hosts queer nights, further west at 248 Allen. Underground Niteclub is ten minutes' walk south on Delaware Avenue, where Allentown meets downtown, and the Pride Center of Western New York is a few doors from it at 278 Delaware.
Elmwood Village, north of Allentown, is queer-friendly rather than a gay district: it's where the Pride parade runs and where you'll find cafés and independent shops. On the edge of Allentown, The Intersection at 100 Elmwood Avenue is a queer-run café.
Bars
Fugazi (503 Franklin Street) is a gay cocktail bar and the easiest first stop, open every day from 5pm to 2am. It calls itself a trans-safe space and draws a mixed, mostly local crowd.
26 (26 Allen Street) took over the space of Cathode Ray, which closed in August 2022, and opened in 2023. It's a video bar with a small dance floor, open daily from 1pm to 3am, with karaoke and DJ nights on the Pride Center calendar.
Underground Niteclub (274 Delaware Avenue) is the comeback story. A gay bar since the 1970s, it closed in 2018 after a lease dispute and reopened in early 2026 under new owner Marty Crawford (WIVB). It opens Tuesday to Saturday from 2pm to 2am, with drag on the first and third Fridays and karaoke on Thursdays.
Nietzsche's isn't a gay bar but it's part of the scene: the long-running Allen Street music venue hosts Sleaze Ball, a drag and dance party by the DJ duo Business Woman Special, and a Queer Open Mic. Bars in Buffalo can stay open until 4am by law, but most of these close at 2-3am. Full details are in our Buffalo gay bars guide.
Buffalo has no gay sauna or bathhouse. New York's state health code has effectively blocked new bathhouses since 1985; PinkNews reported in August 2026 that the rule may be lifted, but nothing has opened. The nearest bathhouses are in Toronto, about 160 km away across the border.
We found no two independent, current sources for any cruising area in Buffalo, so we don't list one. Public lewdness is a crime in New York, and the bars and apps are the safer options.
Pride and events
Buffalo Pride is organised by the Evergreen Health Foundation, not the Pride Center. The main event is a Sunday parade on Elmwood Avenue, from Forest Avenue south to Allen Street, 11am to about 3pm. In 2026 it ran on 7 June with the theme "Rooted in Pride", and the day before Intersect, a Pride arts festival, closed Allen Street to traffic. The old Canalside festival hasn't been part of the programme since 2025. The 2027 date wasn't announced at the time of writing; the parade is usually on the first Sunday of June.
Upstate New York Black & Latino Pride holds a street festival in July (in 2025 at the Richardson Olmsted Campus). Buffalo's Original Drag Brunch has run roughly monthly for years, most recently at Tappo Pizza and Other Half Brewing, and Drag Me to Brunch is at W XYZ Bar on Pearl Street. The Pride Center keeps the most complete calendar of support groups, game nights and parties; our Buffalo LGBTQ+ events page pulls from it.
Some older pages say Buffalo will host Gay Bowl XXVII, the gay flag-football championship, in 2027. We couldn't confirm that: in October 2026 the National Gay Flag Football League hadn't named a 2027 host. What is confirmed is that the Buffalo Bills sponsor a new NGFFL league in the city.
Community and health
Pride Center of Western New York (278 Delaware Avenue): support groups, referrals and the community calendar. GLYS has been taking it over since April 2025.
Evergreen Health (206 South Elmwood Avenue): LGBTQ+ and HIV-focused health care, including PrEP, PEP and gender-affirming care.
MOCHA Buffalo (200 South Elmwood Avenue): Evergreen's centre for LGBTQ+ people of colour, with free testing and counselling.
Daddy's Plants (1250 Niagara Street) is a queer-owned plant shop on the West Side, and the Madeline Davis GLBT Archives of WNY at Buffalo State hold the city's queer history.
A bit of history
Buffalo has a bigger place in queer history than its bar count suggests. The Mattachine Society of the Niagara Frontier was founded here in 1970. One of its founders, Madeline Davis, became the first openly lesbian delegate to a Democratic National Convention in 1972. She later co-wrote Boots of Leather, Slippers of Gold (1993) with Elizabeth Lapovsky Kennedy, a history of Buffalo's working-class lesbian bar community from the 1930s to the 1960s that is still a standard text.
Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
Club Marcella: shut by police in December 2023 after a shooting; it lost its liquor licence and never reopened.
Cathode Ray (26 Allen St): closed August 2022; the space is now 26.
Q Bar / The Q (44 Allen St): closed during COVID. Edison's Proof and Provision opened there in January 2024 as a gay bar, but we found no sign it's still trading in 2026.
The Old Pink (223 Allen St): destroyed by arson in June 2024 and demolished.
Visit Buffalo's LGBTQ+ page and Travel Gay's Buffalo page still list some of these, and Travel Gay's page includes New York City bars.
Practical tips
Getting there: Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) is about 18 km east of downtown. Amtrak stops at the downtown Exchange Street station; the Lake Shore Limited to Chicago uses Buffalo-Depew. Toronto is about 160 km and Niagara Falls about 35 km away.
Getting around: the Metro Rail runs under Main Street and is free on the above-ground stretch from Canalside to Fountain Plaza. Allentown, downtown and Elmwood Village are walkable; use rideshares late at night.
Where to stay: the downtown hotels on Delaware Avenue are a 10-15 minute walk from the bars. The Richardson Hotel near Elmwood Village is the architectural pick. See our Buffalo hotels list.
When: early June for Pride and patio weather. Winters are long and snowy, but the bars stay open year-round.

The gay bars 26 and Fugazi are on or just off Allen Street, and Underground Niteclub and the Pride Center are a short walk south on Delaware Avenue. There's no gay sauna or bathhouse in Buffalo; New York's health code has blocked new ones since 1985. The nearest are in Toronto. We don't list any cruising area, because we couldn't find two current, independent sources for one, and public lewdness is a crime in New York.
Yes. Same-sex marriage has been legal in New York since 2011, state law bans discrimination on sexual orientation and gender identity, and since 2025 the state constitution protects both. New York is also a shield state for trans people. Normal city sense applies late at night, as in any US city.
The Pride Center of Western New York (278 Delaware Avenue) runs support groups and keeps the community calendar. Evergreen Health (206 South Elmwood Avenue) offers PrEP, PEP, testing and gender-affirming care, and its MOCHA Buffalo centre next door serves LGBTQ+ people of colour. GLYS Western New York (741 Main Street) works with LGBTQ+ young people.
