The honest summary: Madison has three full-time gay bars, one queer-friendly alternative club and one of the oldest LGBTQ+ legal traditions in the country. It's a state capital and a Big Ten college town, not a party destination. The bars are small, cheap and friendly. Pride is a one-day festival in August, not a June parade. Most visitors end up at Woof's or the Shamrock near the Capitol and then drive or ride out to FIVE Nightclub for drag and dancing.
Legal in one line: Same-sex marriage is legal nationwide. Wisconsin became the first US state to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation in 1982, but state law still doesn't cover gender identity. Madison's own ordinance has protected sexual orientation since 1975 and gender identity since 2000. In March 2026 Governor Evers vetoed five anti-trans bills.
Where things are
Downtown Madison sits on an isthmus between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona, with the State Capitol in the middle. Two of the three gay bars are within a block of the Capitol Square: Woof's on King Street and the Shamrock on West Main Street. You can walk between them in five minutes.
Willy Street (Williamson Street), east of the Capitol, is the area IGLTA and EveryQueer call Madison's unofficial gayborhood. It's a queer-leaning street of co-ops, cafes and older houses, not a bar district. Its gay dance club, Plan B (later Prism), closed in 2019. Further east, Atwood Avenue has the feminist bookstore A Room of One's Own.
The rest of the scene is spread out. FIVE Nightclub is on Applegate Court on the south side, about 5 km from the Capitol, near the Beltline. Crucible is on Commercial Avenue on the east side. You'll need a car, a bus or a rideshare for both.
Woof's (114 King St) is the gay sports and bear bar. It opened in 2008 in the space that used to be the King Club, a gay bar from an earlier era. Isthmus lists it as an LGBT venue. Expect pool, screens for the game, leather bingo brunches and a regular local crowd. It also hosts King Street Pride in summer. Isthmus lists hours of Sunday noon to midnight, Monday and Tuesday 4pm to midnight, and Wednesday to Saturday from 4pm to close.
Shamrock Bar & Grille
The Shamrock (117 W Main St) has been a gay bar since 1985, and the Wisconsin LGBTQ History Project lists it as still in business. That makes it Madison's longest-running gay bar. It closed briefly in 2013 and reopened that autumn. It's a bar with a kitchen, open 11am to 2am daily, with a weekend brunch, and the crowd is mixed in age and fairly low-key.
FIVE Nightclub (5 Applegate Ct) has been open since 1998 and is the city's gay dance club and drag stage. Older guides put it on University Avenue; that's wrong. Its own site and Isthmus list a full week: line dancing on Mondays, trivia on Tuesdays, karaoke on Wednesdays, drag bingo on the third Thursday, drag shows and fetish nights on Fridays and Saturdays, a Latin night on the first Saturday, and the Mad City Drag Revue on Sundays at 9:30pm. Hours are Monday to Thursday 4 to 11pm, Friday and Saturday 4pm to 2am, and Sunday 4pm to 1am.
Queer-friendly, not gay bars
Crucible (3116 Commercial Ave) is a goth and industrial club whose house rules call it LGBTQ-friendly. Isthmus lists a Trans Social Night there, the fetish night Deviance on fourth Fridays, and Leather & Lace on first Saturdays. Go for the alternative crowd, not a classic gay bar.
The Cardinal Bar (418 E Wilson St) is a general bar with Latin, swing and trivia nights. It has deep roots in Madison's LGBTQ history and now hosts Hot Flash, an early-evening queer dance party with DJ Millbot on the first Friday of the month (7 to 9:30pm, free, 21+, per Isthmus).
Sotto (303 N Henry St) is a basement dance club off State Street with Latin Thursdays and DJs on Saturdays. Travel Gay lists it, but we found no regular queer nights. Treat it as a mainstream club that's comfortable for a mixed group.
Roving parties and drag
A lot of queer Madison happens at events in bars that aren't gay bars. LPub, the monthly Lesbian Pop Up Bar, moves between bars such as Delta Beer Lab, Gib's and The Rigby (Isthmus). Lola's Hi/Lo Lounge on North Sherman Avenue and The Bur Oak on Winnebago Street run drag brunches. The Our Lives Wisconsin calendar and OutReach's listings are the best way to see what's on this week; our Madison events page pulls from both.
Gone but still Googled
Plan B / Prism (924 Williamson St): Plan B opened in 2009, was rebranded as Prism in early 2019 after discrimination complaints, and closed for good on 9 November 2019 (Isthmus, In Business Madison). Nothing queer has reopened in the space.
King Club (114 King St): now Woof's.
Saunas: Madison has no gay bathhouse. Saunaday and other "sauna" listings are co-ed wellness saunas. The nearest gay bathhouse is in Chicago, about 2.5 hours away.
Olin-Turville Park: its days as a cruising ground ended with a 2010 police and parks crackdown. Our cruising page explains why we don't list it.
Pride and events
Madison's main Pride is the Magic Pride Festival, organised by OutReach. It's an afternoon festival at Warner Park on the north side, not a parade. The 2026 edition, the seventh, was on Sunday 16 August from 1 to 6pm (Visit Madison, Travel Wisconsin). The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing.
June is busy too. In 2026 the Daily Cardinal listed the Big Gay PRIDE Market at the Alliant Energy Center (19 to 21 June), a Pride drag brunch at The Bur Oak, a free drag show at the Orpheum, and Middleton Pride. Pride for Black Lives gathered at the Capitol on 12 June. Woof's runs King Street Pride in summer. Older guides that mention a June "OutReach Pride Fest" downtown or a September festival are out of date.
Fair Wisconsin, the statewide advocacy group. Its site lists only a PO box.
Vivent Health, 600 Williamson St, Suite H: HIV testing, PrEP and care.
PFLAG Madison meets on the third Sunday, September to May, 2 to 4pm, at the Friends Meeting House, 1704 Roberts Ct (Isthmus).
A Room of One's Own, 2717 Atwood Ave, the feminist bookstore with a large LGBTQ+ section.
Practical tips
Getting in: Dane County Regional Airport (MSN) is about 10 km northeast of downtown. Milwaukee is about 125 km east and Chicago about 240 km southeast.
Getting around: downtown and Willy Street are walkable and bikeable. FIVE and Crucible need a car or rideshare, especially in winter.
Timing: Badgers home football weekends and UW graduation fill hotels and push prices up. Book early.
ID: all bars are 21+ and check ID at the door.
Weather: winters are long and cold. Summer is when the lakes, terraces and Pride events happen.
A few words of local history
Madison has punched above its weight on LGBTQ+ politics. The city added sexual orientation to its equal-opportunities ordinance in 1975, the first in Wisconsin. Madison state representative David Clarenbach led the 1982 bill that made Wisconsin the first state with the same protection (WORT). Tammy Baldwin, who represented Madison in Congress, became the first openly gay US senator in 2012. The Wisconsin LGBTQ History Project (wislgbthistory.com) has the full story.
