The honest picture

St. Kitts & Nevis decriminalized on August 29, 2022. That's when the High Court threw out the federation's buggery laws, in a case the St. Kitts & Nevis Alliance for Equality (SKNAFE) helped bring. The new law arrived just as the national visibility campaign, 'See Me. Hear Me. Respect Me.', launched in March 2026. Still, society here leans conservative and religious. The law doesn't explicitly protect against discrimination, so public displays of affection outside resorts and tourist bars should be kept discreet. You won't find dedicated gay bars. But the South Frigate Bay strip ('The Strip') and the international resorts are relaxed and welcoming. The local scene revolves around SKNAFE, dating apps, and private events.

The welcoming spots, by name

Mr. X's Shiggidy Shack on The Strip is the main draw. Think karaoke, beach bonfires, fire shows, and a completely mixed, easygoing crowd. The Park Hyatt St. Kitts at Christophe Harbour is the south's top luxury hotel: excellent service, total discretion, and genuinely inclusive of same-sex couples. Salt Plage, the stylish pier lounge at Christophe Harbour, is where you go for sunset cocktails and jazz. Spice Mill Restaurant on Cockleshell Beach—facing Nevis across the channel—does romantic, chef-driven seafood with even-handed service. Carambola Beach Club at South Friars Bay has elegant daybeds, cocktails, and an international leisure crowd. Across the water, Montpelier Plantation & Beach on Nevis—a restored estate-house boutique hotel—is known for warm, discreet, luxurious hospitality for couples.

Know the geography

Basseterre is the capital and cruise port. It's historic and busy by day, quiet at night. South Frigate Bay & Christophe Harbour are the tourist areas in the south: The Strip's nightlife, beach bars, and luxury resorts. This is the most open, comfortable zone for visitors. Nevis, a 45-minute ferry ride away, is the green, quiet sister island, full of historic plantations and secluded resorts offering complete privacy.

The digital scene — and the community's address

Apps are used discreetly here. Most local profiles won't show a face photo—it's a small-island thing. Turn off exact-distance display and follow the local pace. SKNAFE, led by Tynetta McKoy, is the community's main hub. Its social channels are the best place to find out about events and human rights work in the federation.

A perfect St. Kitts day

Morning: Ride the historic sugar train, or climb to Brimstone Hill fortress. Midday: Drive south for a swim and lunch at Spice Mill on Cockleshell Beach. Sunset: Cocktails on the pier at Salt Plage. Evening: A cold beer, live music, and a beach bonfire at Mr. X's Shiggidy Shack on The Strip.

Practical notes

The currency is XCD (US dollars are accepted everywhere). Flights are easy via Miami and New York. This is a twin-island trip worth splitting: Kitts for energy, Nevis for getting away from it all. Keep affection to the resorts and The Strip, support SKNAFE's campaign if you can—and enjoy a federation whose law finally caught up with its hospitality.
