Berkeley doesn't have a dedicated gay bar. It's a surprise, given the city's LGBTQ+ history and activism. Instead, queer life runs through community spaces, the university, and cultural institutions. For a classic gay bar night out, you'll head to Oakland or San Francisco - both just minutes away.
What Berkeley Actually Has
The only gay venue in town is Steamworks Baths on Fourth Street in West Berkeley. It's a men's bathhouse and cruising club, open 24/7, every day of the year. It's been around for decades and is the most reliable gay space in town.
Berkeley's queer social life centers around the Pacific Center for Human Growth on Telegraph Avenue. Founded in 1973, it's one of the oldest LGBTQ+ community centers in the country. They host support groups, counseling, and community events, and organize Berkeley Pride each summer. The UC Berkeley LGBTQ+ Resource Center adds student-driven programming that spills out into the wider community.
Where to Go Out Nearby
Head to North Oakland for the closest bar scene. The historic White Horse Inn at 6551 Telegraph Avenue is one of the oldest continuously operating gay bars in the US. It's an easy walk or short ride from South Berkeley. Uptown and downtown Oakland have most of the East Bay's queer nightlife.
San Francisco is 20 to 30 minutes away by BART. You can easily reach the Castro, SoMa, and the city's full range of gay bars and clubs for a night out.

BART connects Berkeley to Oakland and San Francisco. AC Transit buses cover the city locally. For late nights out, BART plus a rideshare home is the easiest combo.
