Beyond that, Berkeley's queer social life is anchored by the Pacific Center for Human Growth on Telegraph Avenue, founded in 1973 and one of the oldest LGBTQ+ community centers in the country. It hosts support groups, counseling, and community events, and organizes Berkeley Pride each summer. The UC Berkeley LGBTQ+ Resource Center adds student-driven programming that spills out into the wider community. Where to Go Out Nearby
North Oakland is the closest bar scene. The historic White Horse Inn at 6551 Telegraph Avenue, just over the Berkeley border in Oakland, is one of the oldest continuously operating gay bars in the United States and an easy walk or short ride from South Berkeley. Uptown and downtown Oakland hold most of the East Bay's queer nightlife.
San Francisco is 20 to 30 minutes away by BART, putting the Castro, SoMa, and the city's full range of gay bars and clubs within easy reach for a night out.
