Best Gay Bars & Clubs in Manchester

Canal Street has more bars per stretch of pavement than almost any gay district in the UK outside London. You'll find everything from old-school pubs to cocktail bars to full-on nightclubs. A few have outdoor terraces right on the canal. Most are on the main Canal Street strip and the streets just off it.

Canal Street: what to expect

The strip runs about 300 meters along the canal. On one side, bars have terraces over the water; on the other, bars are at street level. Most places open from midday on weekends and late afternoon on weekdays. The noise builds steadily and peaks after midnight.

The bars' personalities vary more than they look from outside. Some are explicitly for gay men; some have a mixed LGBTQ+ crowd; some have become so straight-friendly that the gay element is background, not foreground. If you're looking for an overwhelmingly gay male crowd, not just a tolerant atmosphere, it's good to know which are which.

Drag is woven into the scene in a way particular to Manchester. Several venues run drag shows on weeknights as standard, not just for special occasions. The drag acts on Canal Street are generally high quality—Manchester has produced serious drag talent, and the scene takes it seriously.

Clubs and late venues

Several Canal Street places are full nightclubs, not just bars. They stay open late—4am on weekdays, 6am on weekends at some. Music changes nightly: commercial house and pop at some, harder techno and underground at others. Check social media for current schedules at clubs you're interested in, as nights change often.

The bigger clubs do have dress codes for certain nights, though Manchester's approach is much more relaxed than similar places in London. Trainers are fine. People dress up because they want to, not because they'd be turned away otherwise.

Drinks and pricing

Significantly cheaper than London. A pint of lager costs £4-6. Cocktails are £8-12. Some bars have happy hours until 9pm or 10pm, making pre-midnight drinks even cheaper. Canal Street isn't budget territory like some European cities, but it's very good value by UK standards.

The bars

• — 22 years old and still going strong, Cruz 101 remains a favorite of Manchester's gay community and one of the city’s longest-running gay venues. DJs play disco, R&B, trance, dance, and house. It's a great spot to party and dance until the early hours.
• — Now in its 5th year, Aftershock has made its mark on Manchester’s late-night clubbing scene. This Saturday night/Sunday morning party offers some of the best sounds in the city. Aftershock is held in the basement of Cruz 101. Doors open around midnight.
• Alter Ego — This gay nightclub near Canal Street hosts the popular ‘Poptastic’ night every Tuesday and Saturday. The venue has two floors; one plays cheesy tunes, the other a selection of indie classics and current hits.

• AXM Club — Opened in 2004, AXM Club has a fun, friendly clubbing environment in a stylish, contemporary space. Located in the heart of Gay Village, AXM is open every night until late and draws a good mix of people who come to drink, dance, and socialize.
• Bar Pop — Formerly ‘Crunch Bar’, Bar Pop has great deals on drinks and shots, attracting a younger, student crowd. From Sunday through Thursdays, most drinks are £2. They have regular special events with cabaret performances—details are posted on their Facebook page. Located on Canal Street.
• — Fun entertainment bar on the first floor of REM (Rembrandt Hotel). Belinda Scandal is one of Manchester’s longest-running gay venues, with cabaret shows and other themed events like games, bingo, karaoke, and competitions. Open Wednesday–Saturday. Closed June 2015 – Belinda is moving to a new venue.
• Centre Stage MCR — One of the latest additions to Manchester’s cabaret & entertainment bar scene. Expect trannies with attitude, karaoke evenings, DJs, and more. Closed Tuesdays.
• Charlie's — Karaoke bar. You can sing your diva self on Charlie's mirrored stage, surrounded by lush velvet curtains. Karaoke is the big draw throughout the week, especially popular with the Asian student scene, but don't miss the monthly Whim Wham Club cabaret night. The dance floor is always full on Saturdays for "Heart of Soul" night.
• — One of the most popular pubs in Manchester’s Gay Village. Churchills is a friendly place where the rainbow flag flies proudly outside. It's a great spot for a quiet drink during the summer months or to meet new friends in the evenings.

• Eagle Bar — Lively gay scene bar in an industrial basement setting, hosting DJs and drag shows.
• Eden — Easy going bar and restaurant. Located on the canal across a small wooden bridge, Eden is a place where Canal Street regulars mix with girls' nights out and carefree diners.
• G-A-Y Manchester — Open every night until 4am, G-A-Y (formerly “Spirit”) is a major gay nightclub on Canal Street, with good dance music, regular live acts, and special offers on drinks. It draws a mixed crowd of different types and ages. Like its London branch, G-A-Y is one of Manchester's best party venues. No cover charge.

• — HM Prison Manchester is a high-security male prison in Manchester, England, operated by Her Majesty's Prison Service. It is a local prison, holding prisoners remanded into custody from courts in the Manchester area and Category A prisoners.
• Iconic Bar — This gay bar by AXM hosts different themed nights throughout the week, from bingo to a quiz night on Mondays. Iconic gets very busy on weekends when the resident DJ plays classics, club anthems, and current chart hits.
• KIKI — Dine, drink, or dance, KIKI has it all. From burgers to champagne and drag cabaret to late-night groove as resident DJs spin crowd-pleasing pop.

Practical notes

Canal Street can be tough to get through when it gets busy on weekend nights—it really packs out. Move early if you want an outdoor table. On wet evenings (which is often), the covered indoor areas fill first. Most venues are single-story or have multiple floors, so there's usually space somewhere.
