About this place Carls The Saloon

Carls The Saloon is a casual gay bar located on South Virginia Street in Reno, offering a welcoming space to unwind and connect with locals. The venue has a relaxed, down-to-earth vibe that appeals to those looking for a low-key night out rather than high-energy clubbing. It's the kind of place where you can have a genuine conversation, make new friends, or simply decompress after a long day. One of the standout features is the pool table, with pricing that comes in below the national average, making it an economical choice for visitors looking to enjoy some games without breaking the bank. The overall pricing is known to be reasonable, which combined with the friendly bartending staff, makes for good value in Reno's LGBTQ+ scene. The daytime atmosphere is particularly welcoming, with attentive bartenders who contribute to the friendly, local feel of the space. If you're visiting Reno and prefer intimate, neighborhood-style gay venues over larger clubs, this saloon is worth adding to your itinerary. I have no problem with a gay dive bar, but this place is just sad. From the moment we walked in, there was a strong moldy smell that never went away. It was so bad that I could still smell it on my clothes after we left, which is honestly pretty disgusting. This is not just a vibe issue, this feels like something that actually needs proper mold remediation. We came in trying to be friendly and easygoing, and the bartenders were rude and completely standoffish. Not even a basic level of engagement. It felt like we were an inconvenience just for being there. What really gets me is how the reviews line up with exactly what we experienced. People are not exaggerating. You can see why some walk in and turn right back around. We genuinely tried to be friendly. We told the bartender we were from San Francisco, where there is a huge range of bars from high end to dive, and even the most low key spots are still clean, welcoming, and actually want people there. That was not the case here at all. It felt like they did not care, like they did not want us there, like they were hoping we would just leave. On a Friday night, there were two people in the entire place. Two. You have to ask why. There should have been 150 people in there, and it is very clear why there were not. Between the mold smell and the attitude behind the bar, people are choosing not to stay. This place could be something, but right now it is not.

Came here today twice. In the afternoon it was so empty we left and decided to try later at night. My friend and I came back around 10pm happy to see some patrons. We stood at the bar well for 5 mins and the 2 bartenders never acknowledged us, they were farting around with receipts, so we left again. Good luck to you Carl's.

My wife and I and one of her friends stopped into this place after bowling one day having no idea that it was a gay bar and I'll have to say it was quite Pleasant play the couple games of pool and have actually gone back. I'm not gay but also not a homophobe kind of like the place bartender was very friendly drinks are reasonable just an all-around good experience
