The honest summary: Canberra is a planned capital of about 450,000 people, and in October 2026 it has exactly one queer bar. Cube, the Civic nightclub that carried the city's gay nightlife for about twenty years, closed for good after New Year's Eve 2025. ChiChiz, a queer-owned bar on Northbourne Avenue, opened two weeks earlier and is now the place. Beyond that, queer Canberra lives in mainstream venues that run drag and cabaret nights, in a five-week Pride festival every spring, and in one men's cruise lounge out in Fyshwick. The ACT is about as safe and legally progressive as Australia gets, so what you're short of here is a scene, not safety.
Legal in one line: the ACT decriminalised sex between men in November 1976 (the second Australian jurisdiction to do so), same-sex marriage has been legal nationally since 9 December 2017, conversion practices have been banned since March 2021, and anyone aged 14 or over can self-determine their gender marker since July 2024.
Where things are
Civic, the city centre north of Lake Burley Griffin, is where the bars are. ChiChiz, Smith's Alternative and the Verity Lane drag bingo are all within a few minutes' walk of the Alinga Street light rail stop, and Glebe Park, where Pride Fair Day is held, sits on the east side of Civic. Braddon, just north along Lonsdale Street, is the late-night eating and drinking strip, and local guides point to its "Rainbow Roundabout" as the queer-friendly corner of town; it has independent bars and cafés, not gay bars. Kingston and Manuka, south of the lake, are restaurant suburbs. Fyshwick, about 8 km south-east of Civic, is the light-industrial suburb where the ACT zones its adult businesses. There is no gay district.
The one queer bar: ChiChiz ChiChiz Bar is on the ground floor of the Sydney Building at 32 Northbourne Avenue. It's queer-owned, opened on 19 December 2025, and its own site calls it "a proudly queer-owned Canberra bar built for connection, celebration, and community". The regular week, per the bar: trivia from 6:30pm and karaoke from 8:30pm on Wednesdays, line dancing on alternate Fridays with karaoke upstairs, and DJs from 10pm on Saturdays. Drag shows and themed parties happen as one-off events, announced on Instagram (@chichizbar.canberra). Google lists it open Wednesday to Saturday from 6pm, until about 3:30am on Fridays and Saturdays, and reviews from 2026 talk about cheap weeknight drinks and staff who look after people. It's small and can get crowded on Saturdays.
Queer nights at mainstream venues
Smith's Alternative, a café, bar and performance room at 76 Alinga Street, is the steadiest home for queer shows. Bear World's guide notes regular drag, cabaret and queer nights there, including a monthly Rock Cabaret with drag queens and kings and a bi-monthly Queer Variety Show, and Stun Magazine listed its Club Cornucopia drag night in September 2026. Drag Bingo runs at Verity Lane Market, 50 Northbourne Avenue, on the first Wednesday of each month from February to November 2026 (tickets about $10, per HerCanberra). Queer Flicks screens at the National Film and Sound Archive's Arc Cinema on the first Thursday of the month. Travel Gay lists a monthly Drag Roulette at 88mph, the basement bar on Hobart Place, but the bar's own site doesn't mention it, so check before you go. Phish & Phreak, the drag promoter behind the old Queer Crash nights, now runs drag takeovers at different venues.
Saunas
Saunas and cruising
Canberra has no gay sauna, and we couldn't find one in Queanbeyan either; the nearest are in Sydney. The one men's venue is The Ranch, the cruise lounge behind Fantasy Lane adult store at 19 Molonglo Mall in Fyshwick. Its website, still on the old Mustang Ranch domain, calls it "Canberra's only male cruise lounge", and Travel Gay lists a cinema room, playrooms, lockers and showers. It's open daily from 10am to 11pm. Entry prices aren't published, so call (02) 6280 6969.
Kambah Pool on the Murrumbidgee River, about 25 km south-west of Civic, has had a legal nude bathing area since 1976, and local threads describe it as popular with gay and bisexual men as well as other naturists. Nudity is legal only inside the signposted section, and sex or exposure in public is an offence anywhere in the ACT. We don't publish directions or times for outdoor spots. For meeting men, apps are what most locals use, but keep the usual care: the Canberra Times reported a run of Grindr-lure attacks on gay men in 2024. Meet somewhere public first.
Pride & Events
Pride: SpringOUT
SpringOUT is Canberra's Pride festival, held every spring. The 2026 edition, its 27th, runs from 23 October to 1 December, five weeks this year instead of four. The centrepiece is Fair Day on Saturday 31 October 2026 in Glebe Park, free and family-friendly with more than 80 stalls and food trucks. The programme also includes a comedy gala, the Spring Fever retro disco, One Night In Heaven, A Drag is Born and Loud & Proud, an all-ages gig for trans and non-binary musicians. There's no Mardi Gras-style parade. The 2025 festival ran from 1 November to 5 December. Dates for 2027 had not been announced at the time of writing; springout.com.au is the official site (the .org.au address doesn't work).
Community and health Meridian, called the AIDS Action Council of the ACT until 2020, is the LGBTIQA+ and HIV community health organisation. It's at Havelock House, 85 Northbourne Avenue in Turner, a short walk north of Civic, and offers HIV support, sexual health testing, PrEP and PEP information and counselling. Sexual Health and Family Planning ACT runs a clinic at 28 University Avenue in Civic, and the free Canberra Sexual Health Centre is at Canberra Hospital in Garran (appointments only, Medicare not required). A Gender Agenda supports trans and gender-diverse people. Canberra Qwire, an LGBTQI+ community choir of about 130 singers, rehearses on Thursday evenings with no audition.
Where to Stay
Where to stay
For nights out, stay in Civic or Braddon. QT Canberra on Marcus Clarke Street and Quest Canberra City Walk opposite the Canberra Centre are both walking distance to ChiChiz and Smith's Alternative. On the south side, the Hyatt Hotel Canberra on Commonwealth Avenue and Hotel Kurrajong in Barton are close to Parliament House and the galleries, and East Hotel in Kingston is near the Foreshore. None of these is a gay hotel; they're mainstream hotels with good ratings.
Getting around
Canberra Airport (CBR) is about 8 km east of Civic. The light rail runs from Gungahlin down Northbourne Avenue to Alinga Street in Civic; the extension south to Commonwealth Park is under construction and isn't due to carry passengers until early 2028. Buses cover the rest of the city, and the city is spread out, so rideshare is the easy way home after midnight. Sydney is about 280 km away: around three hours by car, about three and a half hours by Murrays coach from the Jolimont Centre, or just over four hours by NSW TrainLink from Canberra station in Kingston.
Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
Cube Nightclub, 33 Petrie Plaza, Civic: Canberra's gay club for about twenty years, closed after its final New Year's Eve party on 31 December 2025.
Transit Bar, London Circuit: home of Queer Crash and queer karaoke, closed in February 2025 when the business went into liquidation.
Mustang Ranch, Fyshwick: now trades as Fantasy Lane, with The Ranch cruise lounge.
Muse, the gay-owned café and bookshop at East Hotel in Kingston: closed in August 2024.
Shadows, East Row: closed in October 2026, and it was never a queer venue.
Hippo Co and Blackbird in Civic sometimes show up as gay bars online. They're mainstream cocktail bars, and we found no current queer nights at either. Langtrees in Mitchell is a licensed bordello, not a gay bar. Barcode, 16 West and Hush Lounge closed years ago.
