Gay Cruising in Cologne: The Honest 2026 Guide

Last verified: October 2026 · Compiled from venue checks and local and international sources from 2025–2026 · Report a change

In Cologne the evening is measured in small glasses. You sit down in a brewhouse near the cathedral, a blue-aproned Köbes sets a slim 0.2-litre Stange of Kölsch in front of you, pencils a line on your beer mat, and keeps swapping empties for full ones until you put the mat on top of your glass. Later the trams rattle round Rudolfplatz, the Bermuda Triangle on Schaafenstraße spills out onto the pavement, and a few minutes away, down by the Rhine near Heumarkt, two doors on quiet Mathiasstraße lead into the dark. Cologne's cruising scene is smaller than its reputation: two long-running cruise bars, three gay saunas, and one big club that has been shut since at least 2025. What is there is legal, central and easy to walk between.

Legal in one line: Germany has had same-sex marriage since 2017 and strong anti-discrimination law, and since November 2024 the Self-Determination Act (Selbstbestimmungsgesetz) lets adults change their legal gender by declaration; cruise bars and gay saunas are legal, licensed businesses. Sex in public is a different matter: under §183a StGB (Erregung öffentlichen Ärgernisses, "causing a public nuisance") sexual acts in public that deliberately or knowingly cause offence can bring a fine or up to a year in prison.

Mathiasstraße: the cruise-bar street

Cologne's cruising happens mainly on Mathiasstraße, a short street in Altstadt-Süd between Heumarkt and the Rhine, a few minutes' walk from the U-Bahn stop Heumarkt. It is not in the Bermuda Triangle itself (that is the bar quarter around Schaafenstraße and Rudolfplatz, roughly a 15–20 minute walk west), so plan your evening as a stroll: drinks in the Triangle or the old town, then down to the river.

Start on Schaafenstraße

Most nights begin in the Bermuda Triangle, the bar quarter around Schaafenstraße by Rudolfplatz, which is the social heart of gay Cologne. On a warm weekend the pavement fills with people holding Kölsch and hopping between doors. A 2026 Cologne listings guide names, among others, ExCorner (Schaafenstraße 57–59, from 19:00, late every night), Die Mumu (Schaafenstraße 51, daily from 19:00), Iron Cocktail Lounge (Schaafenstraße 45), Exile (Schaafenstraße 61A) and Schampanja round the corner on Mauritiuswall. These are bars, not cruise venues; from here it's a short tram ride or a 15–20 minute walk east to Mathiasstraße, or a few minutes to Phoenix and Babylon.

Deck 5

Deck 5 (Mathiasstraße 5) is a late-night gay cruise bar with a darkroom at the back and cabins. Travel Gay lists it as open from 20:00 until 03:00, and until 05:00 on Friday and Saturday nights, with a crowd mostly in their 40s and 50s and cheap drinks. Recent visitor reviews (2024–2025) are mixed: friendly staff and a mood that changes from night to night, but also complaints about tired toilets and some drinks running out. Go late, keep your expectations relaxed, and check its own channels for themed nights.

Pullermanns

Pullermanns (Mathiasstraße 22) is the former "Hands" and "Boners", long one of the city's fetish and cruise bars. Today it is a men-only cruise bar with a bar, a cruising/fetish area and a darkroom, popular with men over 35. The fixture to know is the naked party on Monday from 18:00; Travel Gay also lists a fetish event on Sundays. Otherwise it opens around 21:00, closing at about 03:00 in the week and 05:00 at weekends (sources differ slightly on the exact hours, so check before you go). Visitors praise friendly staff and fair drink prices.

Kinkz: men-only, fetish-friendly

Kinkz – Men Only! (Balduinstraße 20, near Rudolfplatz) is a men-only bar with a fetish-friendly label and DJs, open Thursday to Sunday evenings from 19:00 according to Travel Gay. Listings don't mention a darkroom, so treat it as a bar for meeting people rather than a cruise club, and check its Facebook page for party nights.

Closed: Station 2B. The large cruise club on Pipinstraße 2 in the old town, with a dance floor upstairs and cabins and a maze downstairs, is listed by Travel Gay as temporarily closed. A July 2025 visitor review describes a reopening that was repeatedly postponed and the premises being advertised for lease. We found no sign of it reopening as of October 2026; if it does, its own website and social media will be the first to say.

Also gone: "Boners" / "Hands" at Mathiasstraße 22 is now Pullermanns.

The saunas

Cologne has three gay saunas. Hours below are as listed in 2025–2026; prices come from visitor reviews, so check the venues' own sites before you go.

Badehaus Babylon

Badehaus Babylon (Friesenstraße 23–25, near U Friesenplatz) is the big one, at about 1,400 m², best known for its outdoor pool, steaming in the inner courtyard on a cool evening, in an inner courtyard. Inside there are a Finnish sauna, steam rooms, a jacuzzi, a labyrinth, a darkroom, cabins and a bar with food. It opens at 10:00 on weekdays and runs round the clock at weekends; one April 2026 reviewer paid €28 entry, with discounts for under-25s and free entry on your birthday. Regular specials have included two-for-one Fridays and a students' day. Recent reviews are mixed, with praise for the pool and atmosphere and complaints about maintenance.

Phoenix Sauna

Phoenix (Richard-Wagner-Straße 12, near U Rudolfplatz) is about 1,100 m², with a steam room, dry sauna, jacuzzi, large cruising areas, a maze and a bar. Reviewers describe it as busier and younger than Babylon. It opens at noon on weekdays and runs through the weekend, with events such as naked parties and two-for-one days. Some reviews suggest that Mondays are a mixed day; check before you go if that matters to you.

Sauna Vulcanus

Sauna Vulcanus (Marienplatz 3, old town, opposite the Casino-Eck pub) is small and traditional, with a dry sauna, steam room, plunge pool and bar, and draws mostly older men and their admirers. It is listed as open daily 11:00–02:00, but one December 2025 visitor found nobody answering the door or phone, so call ahead.

Outdoors: why we don't send you to the parks

Some websites, including older listings, still point to Cologne parks such as the Aachener Weiher and the Herkulesberg as cruising areas. We don't give directions. These are busy public parks used by families, joggers and dog walkers; sex there can fall under §183a StGB, and in the dark they are places where you are an easy target. Cologne police reported a walker being robbed at the Aachener Weiher in March 2026. With two cruise bars and three saunas within a short tram ride, there's no reason to take the risk.

Practical tips

    • Getting around: the KVB trams and U-Bahn cover everything here: Heumarkt for Mathiasstraße and the old town, Rudolfplatz for the Bermuda Triangle and Phoenix, Friesenplatz for Babylon. Buy tickets in the KVB app or at the machines.
    • Lockers: use the cloakroom or locker for your phone and wallet before you step into a darkroom.
    • Dress codes: some nights are naked-only or fetish-themed (Pullermanns on Mondays and Sundays). Ask at the bar if you're not sure.
    • Apps: Grindr and Romeo are both widely used in Germany.
    • Health: Checkpoint Köln, run by Aidshilfe Köln, offers HIV and STI testing and advice, and the queer centre rubicon runs counselling and groups. Be careful with chemsex and never mix GHB with alcohol.
    • Kölsch etiquette: the Köbes will keep the glasses coming, and pencil a line on your Bierdeckel (beer mat) for each one, until you put the mat on top of your glass.
    • Brewhouse food: in a traditional Brauhaus such as Früh am Dom by the cathedral or Päffgen on Friesenstraße, a short walk from Babylon, order Himmel un Ääd ("heaven and earth"): fried black pudding with mashed potato and apple sauce. It's the classic Cologne plate before a long night.

    Pride and big weekends

ColognePride is a city-wide event lasting a couple of weeks. In 2026 it ran from 19 June, with the street festival around the Heumarkt from 3 to 5 July and the CSD parade on Sunday 5 July 2026, which started at 11:30 on the Deutzer Brücke and wound through the centre past Rudolfplatz. The city expected more than 50,000 marchers and several hundred thousand spectators. Mathiasstraße is right next to the Heumarkt, so the cruise bars are packed all weekend. Cologne also has its own leather and bear weekends; see the Cologne city page for dates.

Frequently asked questions

Where is gay cruising in Cologne?

Mostly indoors. The two cruise bars, Deck 5 (Mathiasstraße 5) and Pullermanns (Mathiasstraße 22), sit on one short street in Altstadt-Süd near Heumarkt, a few minutes' walk from the Rhine. The saunas are Badehaus Babylon on Friesenstraße, Phoenix near Rudolfplatz and the small Sauna Vulcanus in the old town. The Bermuda Triangle around Schaafenstraße and Rudolfplatz is where the bars are, and where most nights start.

Is Station 2B in Cologne still open?

No, not as of October 2026. Travel Gay lists the big cruise club on Pipinstraße as temporarily closed, and a July 2025 visitor review says a promised reopening had been postponed several times and the premises were advertised for lease. If it does reopen, its own channels will say so first. For now, use Deck 5, Pullermanns or one of the saunas.

Which gay sauna in Cologne is best for cruising?

It depends on what you want. Badehaus Babylon on Friesenstraße is the big one, with a courtyard pool, steam bath, labyrinth and darkroom. Phoenix on Richard-Wagner-Straße near Rudolfplatz is described by reviewers as busier, younger and more cruising-oriented. Sauna Vulcanus in the old town is small, traditional and popular with older men. Babylon and Phoenix run through the weekend; check each venue's site for current hours and prices.

Is outdoor cruising legal in Cologne?

Not without risk. Under §183a of the German Criminal Code, sexual acts in public that deliberately or knowingly cause offence can be punished with a fine or up to a year in prison. Parks such as the Aachener Weiher are busy public spaces, and police reported a robbery of a walker there in March 2026. We don't give directions to outdoor spots; Cologne's cruise bars and saunas are legal, cheap and safer.

When is Cologne Pride 2026?

ColognePride 2026 ran from 19 June, and the CSD parade was on Sunday 5 July 2026, starting at 11:30 on the Deutzer Brücke, with the street festival around the Heumarkt from 3 to 5 July. The motto was "Für Queerrechte – Viele.Gemeinsam.Stark!" Expect the cruise bars and saunas to be packed that weekend, and check the organisers' site for the 2027 dates.
