The honest summary: Ahmedabad has no gay hotel and no gay guesthouse, and we couldn't find a hotel that markets itself to LGBTQ+ travellers. What it has is a good spread of international chains, a couple of characterful old-city hotels and a lot of small local places. For same-sex couples the practical rule is simple: the big chains are the easiest choice, and small budget hotels are where you're more likely to get questions about two people sharing a bed. That applies to unmarried couples of any kind in Gujarat, not just gay ones.
Legal in one line: Same-sex relations have been legal in India since the Supreme Court's 2018 Navtej Singh Johar ruling, and the criminal code in force since July 2024 has no equivalent of Section 377; same-sex marriage isn't recognised. No law obliges a hotel to ask whether two guests are a couple.
Where to stay: pick your side of the river
Ahmedabad splits in two along the Sabarmati. The east bank holds the walled old city, the UNESCO-listed heart of Ahmedabad with its pols, mosques and Manek Chowk night market. The west bank is the newer city: Ashram Road and Ellisbridge near the river, then Navrangpura, Vastrapur and, furthest out, SG Highway and Sindhu Bhavan Road with the malls and the newer cafés. Traffic is heavy, so where you sleep decides how much time you'll spend in auto-rickshaws.
Old city and riverfront
- The House of MG: a heritage hotel in the 1924 mansion of the textile merchant Mangaldas Girdhardas, opposite the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque. Its rooftop restaurant, Agashiye, serves Gujarati thalis, and the pols, Bhadra Fort and Teen Darwaza are on foot. The most atmospheric base in the city.
- The Cama Hotel: an old-established hotel on Khanpur Road facing the riverfront, at the edge of the walled city. Reviews praise the location more than the rooms.
- Hyatt Regency Ahmedabad: on Ashram Road in Usmanpura, near the riverfront and a few minutes from Sabarmati Ashram. Listings give about 269 rooms. It's the most central of the big chains.
- Four Points by Sheraton: a Marriott-group business hotel opposite Gujarat College at Ellisbridge.
- Clubhouse Nami Residency: a mid-range option on Ashram Road in Paldi, opposite V S Hospital. Booking sites list it in different ways, so check exactly what you're booking.
- Hotel Exotic: a small, well-rated budget hotel near Darpan Circle in Naranpura.
- ITC Narmada: the city's main luxury hotel, on Judges Bungalow Road near IIM Ahmedabad. ITC lists 291 rooms and suites, an outdoor pool, a spa and five restaurants.
- Hyatt Ahmedabad: next to the Ahmedabad One mall and Vastrapur Lake, about 176 rooms. Not the same hotel as the Hyatt Regency.
- Novotel Ahmedabad: at Iscon Cross Roads on SG Highway, about 222 rooms, renovated in 2024.
- Taj Skyline: a glass tower on Sindhu Bhavan Road in Thaltej, in the street where many of the newer restaurants and cafés are.
- Renaissance Ahmedabad: a Marriott hotel in Sola at the north end of SG Highway, handy for Gandhinagar and GIFT City but far from the old city.
- Book a double room online in both names. At international chains this is routine.
- Every guest is asked for ID at check-in; foreigners show a passport and visa.
- Keep public affection low-key in lobbies and on the street. Gujarat is socially conservative.
- If you meet someone on a dating app, meet in a hotel lobby café or another busy public place first. Gujarat has a run of app-based robbery and extortion cases, including in 2026.
- Pride Plaza Hotel on Judges Bungalow Road belongs to India's Pride Hotels chain. The name has nothing to do with LGBTQ+ Pride.
- "LGBTQ+-welcoming" claims: some sites describe ordinary Ahmedabad hotels as LGBTQ+-welcoming or as catering to gay guests. We found no evidence behind those claims, and earlier versions of our own listings repeated them. We've removed them.
- Hotel Legacy at Nana Chiloda is in Gandhinagar district, outside Ahmedabad, so we no longer list it here.

Alcohol: what a dry state means for your hotel
Gujarat has been under prohibition since 1960, so hotels here don't have ordinary bars. According to a 2026 guide to the state's rules, foreign passport holders can get a free tourist liquor permit for up to a month, and visitors from other Indian states can get a one-week permit for ₹20 plus ₹200. You buy at a licensed permit shop, usually inside a larger hotel, and drink in private. A 2020 state list of permit shops included ones at Hyatt Ahmedabad (Vastrapur) and Novotel. In GIFT City, near Gandhinagar, visitors from outside Gujarat can drink at licensed hotel and restaurant outlets by showing photo ID since a December 2025 notification.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a gay hotel in Ahmedabad?
No. We found no gay hotel, gay guesthouse or LGBTQ+-run accommodation in the city. International chains are the easiest choice for same-sex couples.

Will a hotel refuse two men or two women sharing a room?
Not at international chains, where a double booking in two names is routine. Some small budget hotels refuse unmarried couples of any kind, so check reviews or book a chain.
Can I get a drink at my hotel?
Only with a liquor permit, bought and drunk in private; some larger hotels have a permit shop. Without a permit, drinking is an offence in Gujarat. GIFT City near Gandhinagar is the exception, with ID-only access for visitors.
Which area should I stay in?
The old city or Ashram Road if you're here for the heritage sights; Vastrapur or SG Highway if you're here for business or prefer malls and newer cafés.
