When the Minuano blows in off the pampas, the cold polar wind that follows Porto Alegre's winter fronts, a hot steam room starts to look like the best idea in the city. In summer the air by the Guaíba turns thick and humid, and the old termas of Floresta fill with men cooling off in the shade of the cabins. These are traditional Brazilian bathhouses: a dry sauna, a steam room, private cabins, a bar, porn on the screens and, often, a terrace for a cigarette. Most of them sit in a few blocks of Floresta, with one busy house in Rio Branco and one out in Navegantes. Nothing here is slick, recent reviews are uneven, and few places publish hours or prices, but the welcome is warm. One thing to know before you plan: these are afternoon and early-evening places, not night venues, so go after lunch and save the late hours for the bars. Here's what we could confirm for 2026.

Legal in one line: Brazil has had marriage equality since 2013, and homophobia has been punishable as a crime of racism since 2019. Saunas are legal private venues; sex in a public place is not, and ato obsceno (Article 233 of the Penal Code) can bring three months to a year in prison or a fine.

The men's saunas

Thermas Point Sul · Rua Cabral 468, Rio Branco

The most reviewed sauna in the city, with more than 200 Google reviews. It has two saunas, plenty of cabins and bar areas, plus massage, porn, lockers, a terrace, and towels and slippers. A May 2026 visitor paid R$75. Fans in 2026 praise a discreet, clean and well-kept house, a friendly crowd, new slippers and fluffy towels, and good massages. Critics in the same months report one towel per guest, only one bar open, air conditioning reportedly out for months, a floor that gets very slippery when wet, and brusque staff at reception. Mind your step. Hours aren't published.

Thermas 238 · Rua Ernesto Alves 238, Floresta

A traditional men's sauna around the corner from the Club 13 cruise bar, with dry sauna, steam room, private cabins, a bar, porn, a terrace with an outdoor smoking area, and massage. It keeps afternoon and early-evening hours, which it doesn't publish online, and a reviewer mentions spending R$50. Reviews from 2025 and 2026 mostly praise a clean, airy, well-kept space, a hot, humid steam room, air conditioning and a friendly owner, with a very gaúcho extra for anyone staying on (see the gaúcho ritual below). It draws bears: a November 2025 visitor reported "an excellent gathering of bears and admirers". There are complaints too, about rude service at the door. Phone (51) 3237-4900.

Thermas BC · Rua Dr. Barros Cassal 363, Floresta

An old-fashioned men-only sauna with dry sauna, steam room, porn, a lounge and private cabins, and a mostly older crowd. Regulars call it the best traditional sauna in town and say it's busy. The downsides are maintenance: visitors in 2024 and 2025 found only one shower working on hot, crowded days, and a May 2026 visitor said cleanliness "leaves much to be desired" and the dry sauna doesn't get hot, though he liked the one employee on shift. No published prices or hours; phone (51) 3407-9600.

Sauna Guaíba · Avenida Cairu 524, Navegantes

Out in Navegantes, near the old industrial Quarto Distrito, with dry sauna, steam room, a darkroom, cabins, a bar and free condoms. Ratings are high, but most come without text and date from 2020 to 2024; the most recent written review, from July 2026, praises the service and the steam. There's no published phone, price or hours, so treat it as one to check locally, and take a car door to door.

Mixed saunas and party houses

Le Jardin · Avenida Alberto Bins 1062, Centro Histórico

A sauna in a historic, rather worn mansion, which one 2026 visitor called "one of the oldest in Porto Alegre", with dry and steam saunas, a separate cruising area, a view, and shows and a raffle at weekends. It's mixed: a November 2025 visitor says it's open to men, women and couples, so don't expect a men-only crowd. Recent visitors paid R$70 with sauna access and R$40 without. Opinions split: some find it fair for the shows and a busy Sunday, others call it overpriced, run-down or dirty, with a broken dry sauna, and one complains that there was no locker and belongings were sealed in a bag. Phone (51) 3019-9190.

Sauna LUX · Avenida Pernambuco 2765, Floresta

Part sauna, part party house: reviews from 2024 and 2025 mention heated saunas, a terrace, food, drinks and drag and go-go boy shows, and parties with contests hosted by Dirnei Messias. Recent opinion has turned, though: in 2025 and 2026 visitors called it cold and dirty, and one said most of the men there were sex workers rather than customers. Check its Instagram, @saunaluxpoa, or phone (51) 2314-8928 before going.

Garotos de programa: as in saunas across Brazil, garotos de programa (male escorts, often just "GP") may be working, sometimes openly. It's an accepted part of the culture. If someone approaches and you're not interested, a smile and "não, obrigado" is all you need. If you are, agree the price and what it covers before you go into a cabin, and never pay in advance by Pix.

Prefer a cruise bar?

If the saunas don't suit you, Porto Alegre has three cruise bars: Club 13 Cruising (Rua Santo Antônio 96, Floresta), a men-only venue over three air-conditioned floors with a darkroom and cabins, open 15:00–21:00, at R$35 in cash or R$37 by card or Pix (R$30 between 15:00 and 15:30); and two small bars in Centro Histórico, Hole Cruising Bar and Apartamento 21, which a May 2026 visitor says gets packed on Mondays. Our Porto Alegre cruising guide has the detail.

Adult cinemas: we couldn't confirm that any adult cinema (cinemão) is operating in Porto Alegre in 2026, so we don't list one.

Sauna etiquette

    • What's included: entry usually gets you a locker, a towel and slippers. Drinks, private cabins and massages are paid separately, often on a tab tied to your locker key and settled when you leave.
    • Consent: cabins and darkrooms run on body language. A hand gently pushed away means no; take it gracefully, and feel free to do the same.
    • Showers first: shower before the steam room and the pool areas. On busy days showers can be in short supply, so be quick.
    • Phone and valuables: leave valuables at the hotel, keep your phone in the locker, and don't film or photograph anyone.
    • Safer sex: some houses hand out condoms, but don't count on it. Bring your own condoms (camisinhas) and lube.
    • Floors: wet tiles get slippery, a complaint at more than one house. Keep your slippers on.

    The gaúcho ritual

Don't be surprised if someone arrives with a thermos under his arm. Chimarrão, bitter green erva-mate in a gourd with a metal straw, topped up with hot water and passed around the circle, is Rio Grande do Sul's daily ritual. If you're offered one, drink the gourd dry, until the straw gurgles, and hand it back to the person pouring; don't stir the straw, and say "obrigado" only when you've had enough, because in the gaúcho circle it means "no more for me". After the steam, the local move is churrasco: slow-grilled beef with farofa, the home cooking of the state where Brazilian barbecue was born. At Thermas 238, one reviewer even says you can bring your own meat for the staff to put on the grill.

    Practical tips

    • Getting there: use Uber or 99 door to door. Floresta and Centro Histórico are quiet after dark, and Navegantes is a car ride from anywhere. Order the car from inside the sauna and step out when it's at the door.
    • Timing: these are mostly afternoon and early-evening places, and Club 13 closes at 21:00, so plan the sauna before dinner and the bars after; see our Porto Alegre gay bars guide.
    • Paying: cards are widely accepted. Pix, Brazil's instant payment, is everywhere, but it needs a Brazilian bank account and CPF number, so carry a card and some cash in small notes.
    • Call ahead: few saunas publish hours or prices, and reviews mention broken equipment. A quick phone call or WhatsApp saves a wasted trip.
    • Apps: Hornet is big in Brazil, often bigger with locals than Grindr, so install both. Be wary of anyone who rushes to move you somewhere private or asks for a Pix.

Health: PEP and PrEP through the SUS

Brazil's public health system, the SUS, offers free HIV testing, PrEP and PEP. If a condom breaks or you're worried about a risk, PEP must start within 72 hours, and the sooner the better: go to a public UPA emergency unit or a hospital emergency room and ask for PEP (say "profilaxia pós-exposição" if needed). Bring your passport.

    Pride

The Parada Livre, first organised in 1997 by the Nuances group and declared part of Porto Alegre's intangible cultural heritage by the city council in November 2025, used to be held in December. In 2026 it moved: the 29th Parada Livre took place on Sunday 14 June 2026 in Parque Farroupilha, the Redenção, under the theme "Nosso Orgulho na Urna" ("Our Pride at the Ballot Box"), with programming from midday and the march around the park in the late afternoon. The 30th edition is in preparation; we couldn't confirm its date, so check the organisers' channels.

A few words of Portuguese (and gaúcho)

    • termas / sauna: bathhouse
    • sauna seca / sauna a vapor: dry sauna / steam room
    • cabine: private cabin
    • quarto escuro: darkroom
    • armário: locker
    • toalha: towel
    • garoto de programa (or GP): male escort
    • camisinha: condom
    • não, obrigado: no, thank you
    • bah: the all-purpose gaúcho exclamation ("wow", "oh no", "well")
    • tchê: mate, pal
    • tri: very, really (tri bom, "really good")
