Gay Cruising in Porto Alegre: The Honest 2026 Guide

Last verified: October 2026 · Compiled from venue checks and local and international sources from 2025–2026 · Report a change

In Porto Alegre, the thermos comes too. Gaúchos carry their chimarrão everywhere: a gourd of bitter green erva-mate, a metal straw, hot water topped up again and again and passed from hand to hand. At sunset, half the city seems to be sitting by the Guaíba with one, watching the sky go orange over the water. In winter the Minuano, the cold polar wind that blows in behind the cold fronts, cuts through the damp streets, and summers are heavy and humid, which may be why the steam room has such a loyal following. The city's cruising scene lives almost entirely indoors: a men-only cruise bar and a cluster of old-school saunas in Floresta, two small cruise bars in Centro Histórico, and a busy sauna in Rio Branco. Nothing here is slick, and recent reviews are uneven, but the welcome is warm. Here's what we could confirm for 2026.

Legal in one line: Brazil has had marriage equality since 2013, and homophobia has been punishable as a crime of racism since 2019. Sex in a public place is a different matter: ato obsceno (Article 233 of the Penal Code) can bring three months to a year in prison or a fine. That's why this guide sends you indoors.

Cruise bars

Porto Alegre has three venues that work as cruise bars: a bar to start with, then dark corners, cabins and video rooms behind. None of them is big, and all are best on the nights locals know about, so ask at the bar.

Club 13 Cruising · Rua Santo Antônio 96, Floresta

The venue's own website calls it "a cruising bar exclusively for men": three air-conditioned floors with a darkroom, a communal room, individual cabins, TV rooms, lockers and drinks, near Shopping Total. It runs in the afternoon and early evening, 15:00–21:00, but the site contradicts itself on days (one line says Wednesday to Monday, the footer says every day), so check before a Tuesday visit. Entry is R$35 in cash or R$37 by card or Pix, and R$30 if you arrive between 15:00 and 15:30. Reviews from 2025 and 2026 keep coming back to how clean it is, the stylish decor and a friendly owner, Álvaro; the main complaint is that it can be quiet, even at weekends, so it's worth going at a busier hour or asking when it fills up.

Hole Cruising Bar · Rua Vigário José Inácio 799, Centro Histórico

A newer cruise bar on two floors that a December 2025 visitor described as cosy and spotless. Reviews from early 2026 praise the central location, very clean bathrooms with bidets and showers, cold drinks, a drinks menu and friendly staff. It has only a handful of reviews so far, and no published hours or prices: check @holecruisingbar on Instagram before you go.

Apartamento 21 · Rua Riachuelo 1520, Centro Histórico

About 150 metres from Hole, this small, long-running indoor cruise bar has the most loyal following in town: one reviewer has been a regular for eight years, and visitors in 2025 and 2026 talk about owners and staff who make out-of-towners feel at home, and a place that's "not just about sex". A May 2026 visitor says it gets packed on Mondays. The space has been through renovations, and a January 2026 reviewer found the closed-in rooms damp, with mould. There are no published hours or prices.

Centro after dark: the old streets around Hole and Apartamento 21 empty out at night. Arrive and leave by Uber or 99, door to door: order the car from inside, step out when it's at the door, and carry little cash.

Saunas

Porto Alegre's saunas are traditional Brazilian termas: dry sauna, steam room, cabins, a bar and porn on the screens. Most cluster in Floresta, the old district between Centro and the riverside Quarto Distrito, with one each in Rio Branco and Navegantes. As across Brazil, garotos de programa (male escorts) may be working; it's an accepted part of the culture, and a smile and "não, obrigado" is all you need if you're not interested.

Thermas Point Sul · Rua Cabral 468, Rio Branco

The most reviewed sauna in the city, with over 200 Google reviews. GayOut's listing describes two saunas, plenty of cabins and two bars, plus massage, porn, lockers, a terrace and towels and slippers. A May 2026 visitor paid R$75. Fans in 2026 praise a discreet, clean and well-kept house, a friendly crowd, new slippers and fluffy towels, and good massages. Critics in the same months report one towel per guest, only one bar open, air conditioning reportedly out for months, a floor that gets very slippery when wet, and brusque staff at reception. Mind your step.

Thermas 238 · Rua Ernesto Alves 238, Floresta

A traditional men's sauna around the corner from Club 13, with dry sauna, steam room, private cabins, a bar, porn, a terrace with an outdoor smoking area, and massage. GayOut lists it as open Monday to Saturday 13:00–20:00, and a reviewer mentions spending R$50. Reviews from 2025 and 2026 mostly praise a clean, airy, well-kept space, a hot, humid steam room, air conditioning and a friendly owner; one adds, very gaúcho, that you can bring meat for the staff to grill. It draws bears: a November 2025 visitor reported "an excellent gathering of bears and admirers", and GayOut's calendar lists a recurring Saturday bear night at 20:00, which doesn't match the listed closing time, so confirm. There are complaints too, about rude service at the door. Phone (51) 3237-4900.

Thermas BC · Rua Dr. Barros Cassal 363, Floresta

An old-fashioned sauna with dry sauna, steam room, porn, a lounge and private cabins, and a mostly older crowd. Regulars call it the best traditional sauna in town and say it's busy. The downsides are maintenance: visitors in 2024 and 2025 found only one shower working on hot, crowded days, and a May 2026 visitor said cleanliness "leaves much to be desired" and the dry sauna doesn't get hot, though he liked the one employee on shift. No published prices or hours; phone (51) 3407-9600.

Le Jardin · Avenida Alberto Bins 1062, Centro Histórico

GayOut's listing calls it a bar and club, but reviews describe a sauna in a historic, rather worn mansion, which one 2026 visitor called "one of the oldest in Porto Alegre", with dry and steam saunas, a separate cruising area, a view, and shows and a raffle at weekends. It's mixed: a November 2025 visitor says it's open to men, women and couples. Recent visitors paid R$70 with sauna access and R$40 without. Opinions split: some find it fair for the shows and a busy Sunday, others call it overpriced, run-down or dirty, with a broken dry sauna, and one complains that there was no locker and belongings were sealed in a bag. Phone (51) 3019-9190.

Sauna LUX · Avenida Pernambuco 2765, Floresta

Part sauna, part party house: reviews from 2024 and 2025 mention heated saunas, a terrace, food, drinks and drag and go-go boy shows, and parties with contests hosted by Dirnei Messias. Recent opinion has turned, though: in 2025 and 2026, visitors called it cold and dirty, and one said most of the men there were sex workers rather than customers. Check its Instagram, @saunaluxpoa, or phone (51) 2314-8928 before going.

Sauna Guaíba · Avenida Cairu 524, Navegantes

Out in Navegantes, near the Quarto Distrito. GayOut's listing gives dry sauna, steam room, darkroom, cabins, a bar and free condoms. Ratings are high, but most come without text and date from 2020–2024; the most recent written review, from July 2026, praises the service and the steam. There's no published phone, prices or hours, so treat it as one to check locally.

Listed, but not what you'd expect: Sauna Porto Alegre (Rua Ramiro Barcelos 451), filed by GayOut as a gay sauna, is described by its reviewers as a traditional family sauna in the Finnish style, with pools, a restaurant and a women's sauna, "frequented by intellectuals, politicians and businesspeople". It isn't a cruising venue. Dark Room (Rua Almirante Barroso 251, Floresta), filed as a gay bar, comes across in reviews as a small swingers-style venue for couples: a January 2026 visitor who expected a gay venue found only heterosexual couples and was refused a refund. Ask before you pay. We also couldn't confirm that any adult cinema (cinemão) is operating in Porto Alegre in 2026, so we don't list one.

Why there's no outdoor list

GayOut doesn't send you to parks, riverbanks or public toilets in Porto Alegre, on purpose. Sex in a public place is a crime in Brazil, and robbery after anonymous night-time hookups is a known risk in Brazilian city centres. With three cruise bars and several saunas, there's a door that locks and a locker for your phone not far away.

Practical tips

    • Getting around: use Uber or 99 door to door, especially at night in Centro and Floresta, where many streets are quiet after dark. Order the car from inside the venue and step out when it arrives.
    • Timing: Club 13 and Thermas 238 are afternoon and early-evening places that close around 20:00–21:00. Plan your cruising before dinner, and your nightlife after.
    • Paying: cards are widely accepted. Pix, Brazil's instant payment, is everywhere, but it needs a Brazilian bank account and CPF number, so carry a card and some cash in small notes; Club 13 is cheaper in cash.
    • Locker and phone: leave valuables at the hotel; lock your phone in the locker, not the cabin. Bring your own condoms and lube.
    • Consent: darkrooms and cabins run on body language. A hand gently pushed away means no, and you can always say no, move on or leave.
    • Apps: Hornet is big in Brazil, often bigger with locals than Grindr, so install both. Meet in a bar first, and be wary of anyone who rushes to change venue or asks for a Pix.
    • Before and after: the social side of gay Porto Alegre is in Cidade Baixa: try Porto Carioca or Purple Drinkeria, a small, friendly karaoke bar on Rua General Lima e Silva. Venezianos, a Cidade Baixa LGBTQIA+ bar for some 26 years, was shut by city inspectors on 29 August 2026, mid drag show, in a dispute over its licence category; in September it was still campaigning to reopen, so check its social media before you go. In neighbouring Bom Fim, Bar Ocidente, open since December 1980 in an old house on Avenida Osvaldo Aranha, is the city's classic bohemian nightclub, remembered by early regulars as a place where gay men mixed outside the gay-only circuit. See all Porto Alegre gay bars.

    The gaúcho ritual

If someone hands you a chimarrão, it's a small honour. Drink the gourd dry, until the straw gurgles, then hand it back to the person pouring; don't stir the straw, and say "obrigado" only when you've had enough, because in the gaúcho circle it means "no more for me". Then there's churrasco: Rio Grande do Sul is the home of Brazilian barbecue, and an after-sauna meal of slow-grilled beef with farofa is about as local as it gets.

    Pride, health and local flavour

Pride: the Parada Livre was first organised in 1997 by the Nuances group, and in November 2025 the city council voted unanimously to declare it part of Porto Alegre's intangible cultural heritage. It used to be held in December (the 28th edition was on 7 December 2025), but the 29th Parada Livre was on Sunday 14 June 2026 in Parque Farroupilha, known to everyone as the Redenção, under the theme "Nosso Orgulho na Urna" ("Our Pride at the Ballot Box"). Programming started at midday and the march, with six themed sound trucks, set off around the park in the late afternoon. Some 15 groups organise it, including Nuances and Somos. The 30th edition is in preparation; we couldn't confirm its date, and some listings still show a December 2026 date, so check the organisers' channels.

Health: Brazil's public health system, the SUS, offers free HIV testing, PrEP and PEP. If a condom breaks, PEP must start within 72 hours: go to a public UPA emergency unit or a hospital emergency room and ask for PEP.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a gay cruise bar in Porto Alegre?

Yes, three. Club 13 Cruising, at Rua Santo Antônio 96 in Floresta, is a men-only cruise bar over three air-conditioned floors with a darkroom, cabins and video rooms, open in the afternoon and early evening. In Centro Histórico, Hole Cruising Bar (Rua Vigário José Inácio 799) and Apartamento 21 (Rua Riachuelo 1520) are small, friendly cruise bars a short walk apart.

Is there a gay sauna in Porto Alegre?

Yes. Thermas Point Sul, at Rua Cabral 468 in Rio Branco, is the most reviewed, with dry and steam saunas, cabins, a bar and massage. In Floresta, Thermas 238 (Rua Ernesto Alves 238) and Thermas BC (Rua Dr. Barros Cassal 363) are traditional men's saunas, and Le Jardin occupies an old mansion on Avenida Alberto Bins. Recent reviews of all of them are mixed, so call ahead.

How much does a gay sauna cost in Porto Alegre?

Visitors in 2025 and 2026 report about R$50 at Thermas 238, R$75 at Thermas Point Sul and R$70 at Le Jardin with sauna access (R$40 without). Club 13 lists R$35 in cash or R$37 by card or Pix, and R$30 if you arrive between 15:00 and 15:30. Drinks and massages are extra.

Is outdoor cruising safe in Porto Alegre?

GayOut doesn't recommend it and doesn't list outdoor spots. Sex in a public place is a crime in Brazil (ato obsceno, Article 233 of the Penal Code), and robbery after anonymous night-time hookups is a known risk in Brazilian city centres. Porto Alegre has three cruise bars and several saunas, which are the safer choice.

When is Porto Alegre Pride?

The Parada Livre, first held in 1997, used to take place in December, but the 29th edition was on Sunday 14 June 2026 in Parque Farroupilha (Redenção), starting at midday with the march at around 16:00 to 17:00. The 30th edition is in preparation; check the organisers' channels for the date.
