On a warm Friday in Cidade Baixa, the pavements of Rua General Lima e Silva and Rua da República fill with plastic tables, cold chopp and students arguing about politics, while someone at the next table passes a chimarrão gourd that has been topped up since the afternoon. Porto Alegre is the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, a gaúcho city of steakhouses, Minuano winds and long sunsets over the Guaíba, and its LGBTQ+ nightlife is spread over a few neighbourhoods rather than packed into one strip. The social bars cluster in Cidade Baixa, with Bar Ocidente next door in Bom Fim, the big dance nights are in Independência and the Quarto Distrito, and the cruise bars are in Floresta and Centro Histórico. 2026 has been a bumpy year: the long-running Venezianos was shut by city inspectors in August, and the drag bar Workroom has been planning its return. Here's what we could confirm.

Legal in one line: Brazil has had marriage equality since 2013, and since 2019 homophobia and transphobia have been punishable as a crime of racism, so being refused service or harassed for being gay is a criminal matter you can report to the police.

Cidade Baixa: the bar district

Cidade Baixa ("Low Town"), just south of the centre, is where Porto Alegre goes out: bohemian, student-heavy and mixed, with the Travessa dos Venezianos, a lane of historic houses protected as heritage since 1980, at its heart. Most LGBTQ+ bars here are small, with tables spilling onto the street.

Purple Drinkeria & Store · Rua General Lima e Silva 594, loja 7

A small LGBTQ+ bar with a shop corner, serving cocktails at the counter and selling merch, with karaoke on some nights. It has a 4.8 rating from nearly 300 Google reviews, and reviewers describe a friendly, welcoming place where "the price is fair". Hours and themed nights are posted on Instagram, @sigapurple; phone (51) 99615-3253.

Porto Carioca Bar · Rua da República 188

A few steps from Purple, this is a mainstream, gay-friendly bar with a mixed crowd, food and drinks, and a good place to start the night. One reviewer says it closes at about 02:00, with last drinks around 01:30. Check portocariocabar.com.br or phone (51) 3212-0476 for the night's opening hours.

Workroom · Rua Vicente Fontoura 1619 (planned)

A drag bar founded in Cidade Baixa in 2017, which its owners described in 2024 as "a drag bar in a conservative city". It survived the May 2024 flood, moved to the historic Cine-Theatro Ypiranga, then spent a period as a travelling party around Rio Grande do Sul. In August 2026, Jornal do Comércio reported that it would reopen in the former Circo Bar at Rua Vicente Fontoura 1619, a 160-capacity space with a free-entry bar on the ground floor and paid drag, stand-up and circus shows upstairs, with the official opening planned for the end of September 2026 and house queens Cassandra Calabouço and Charlene Voluntaire on the bill. By late October 2026 we had found no press report or ticket listing confirming that the opening went ahead, so check @workroombar on Instagram before you go.

Shut in 2026: Venezianos (Vene Pub Café, Rua Joaquim Nabuco 397, Cidade Baixa), a pub and café with drag shows and some 26 years of uninterrupted business, was shut by municipal inspectors on Saturday 29 August 2026, during a show by drag performer Cassandra Calabouço on Lesbian Visibility Day. The inspectors said the business needed a different activity classification; the management said it holds a licence for a bar with entertainment and that its safety equipment was in order. A protest on 31 August, backed by the Parada Livre organisers, the NGO Somos and local politicians, demanded its immediate reopening under the slogan "O Venê não vai fechar!" ("Venê won't close!"). We couldn't confirm a reopening by late October 2026; check @venepubcafe on Instagram.

Bom Fim: Bar Ocidente

Bar Ocidente · Avenida Osvaldo Aranha 960, Bom Fim

Open since December 1980 in an old house opposite the Redenção park, Ocidente is the city's classic bohemian bar and club, remembered by early regulars as a place where gay men mixed outside the gay-only circuit. Today it's mixed and queer-friendly rather than a gay bar, with live music, party nights, draught beer and snacks. Reviewers say drinks aren't cheap. The programme changes nightly; check barocidente.com.br.

Clubs and parties

Vitraux Club · Rua da Conceição 492, Independência

An established gay club on the edge of the centre, with more than 1,000 Google reviews. Reviews from February to June 2026 describe a spacious venue with two dance floors playing different music, a smoking area and quick bar service, and one calls Sunday nights "the best LGBT party in Porto Alegre". Like most Brazilian clubs, it gets going after midnight. Not everyone is a fan: 2026 reviewers also complain of crowding, high prices and heavy-handed security, and neighbours have complained about noise. Check vitraux.com.br or phone (51) 3028-4004 for the week's nights and entry.

The Baron Club · Rua Dr. João Inácio 178, Quarto Distrito

A party venue in the old industrial Quarto Distrito that works on ticketed event nights, sold through its own site, thebaron.cliquefesta.com.br. Reviewers mention air conditioning, a good sound system, a bar and darkrooms, and one calls it the biggest adult venue for the LGBT community in the city; others found the dance floor too dark and had a bad experience with security at the exit. There are no published hours or prices, so check the event page; phone (51) 98109-6611. The district is quiet at night, so arrive and leave by car.

Cabaret POA · Rua Sete de Setembro 708, Centro Histórico

A cabaret-style bar and party space in the old centre that has hosted outside party collectives such as Ministério. We couldn't confirm its 2026 programme, so check its social media before heading over.

Cruise bars

For something less social, Porto Alegre has three cruise bars, all with darkrooms and cabins. Club 13 Cruising (Rua Santo Antônio 96, Floresta) is men-only, over three air-conditioned floors, open 15:00–21:00, at R$35 in cash or R$37 by card or Pix (R$30 between 15:00 and 15:30). In Centro Histórico, Hole Cruising Bar (Rua Vigário José Inácio 799) is a newer two-floor bar that early-2026 visitors found spotless, and Apartamento 21 (Rua Riachuelo 1520) is a small, long-running bar with loyal regulars that a May 2026 visitor says gets packed on Mondays. Saunas are covered in our Porto Alegre gay saunas guide, and the cruise bars in more detail in the cruising guide.

Getting home safely: Cidade Baixa is lively on Friday and Saturday nights, but the streets around Centro Histórico, Floresta and the Quarto Distrito empty out after dark. Use Uber or 99 door to door: order from inside the bar, check the plate before you get in, and step out when the car is at the door. Carry one card, a little cash and your phone deep in a front pocket, and avoid walking between neighbourhoods late at night.

The gaúcho table

Before the bars open, Porto Alegre drinks chimarrão: bitter green erva-mate in a gourd with a metal straw, topped up with hot water and passed around the circle, often in the Redenção park on a Sunday afternoon. If you're offered one, drink it dry, until the straw gurgles, and hand it back to whoever is pouring; don't stir the straw, and say "obrigado" only when you've had enough, because it means "no more for me". The night itself runs on ice-cold chopp (draught beer) and petiscos to share, and if anyone suggests a late churrasco or a xis, Porto Alegre's oversized toasted burger sandwich, say yes.

Practical tips

    • Timing: Brazilians go out late. Bars in Cidade Baixa get going from about 21:00 or 22:00, and clubs such as Vitraux fill after midnight. Fridays, Saturdays and, at Vitraux, Sundays are the big nights.
    • Paying: cards are accepted almost everywhere. Pix, Brazil's instant payment, is everywhere too, but it needs a Brazilian bank account and CPF number, so carry a card and some cash.
    • The comanda: many bars and clubs hand you a comanda at the door, a consumption card on which every drink is recorded, and you settle it at the cashier on the way out. Keep it safe, because some venues post a steep fine for losing it. Brazilian consumer bodies take a dim view of this: Procon in Maranhão, for example, calls a lost-comanda fine an abusive practice under articles 39 and 51 of the Consumer Defence Code (CDC), since a venue can't pass the job of controlling its own sales on to the customer. You still pay for what you drank, so tell the staff at once, ask for an itemised bill and a receipt for any fee, and take it to Procon if you think you were overcharged.
    • ID: clubs often ask for photo ID at the door; carry a copy of your passport.
    • Apps: Hornet is big in Brazil, often bigger with locals than Grindr, so install both. Meet new people in a bar first, and be wary of anyone who rushes to change venue or asks for a Pix.
    • Health: the public health system, the SUS, offers free HIV testing, PrEP and PEP. If you need PEP, start it within 72 hours at a UPA emergency unit or hospital emergency room.

    Pride

The Parada Livre was first organised in 1997 by the Nuances group, and in November 2025 the city council declared it part of Porto Alegre's intangible cultural heritage. It used to be held in December, but the 29th Parada Livre took place on Sunday 14 June 2026 in Parque Farroupilha, the Redenção, under the theme "Nosso Orgulho na Urna" ("Our Pride at the Ballot Box"), with programming from midday and the march around the park in the late afternoon. The 30th edition is in preparation; we couldn't confirm its date, so check the organisers' channels.

A few words of Portuguese (and gaúcho)

    • bah: the all-purpose gaúcho exclamation ("wow", "oh no", "well")
    • tchê: mate, pal
    • tri: very, really (tri legal, "really cool")
    • guri / guria: lad / girl
    • chopp: draught beer
    • comanda: the tab card you get at the door
    • balada: a night out, a club night
    • bar LGBT / bar gay: gay bar
    • show de drag: drag show
    • pegação: cruising, making out
    • saideira: the last round
    • não, obrigado: no, thank you
