The honest summary: Caracas still has a gay scene. It's small, local and mostly Venezuelan, and it sits in Sabana Grande, the busy commercial district around the Boulevard de Sabana Grande, where the city's first gay bar opened in 1970. In October 2026 we could confirm four gay bars and clubs and two men's saunas. Getting to them safely takes more planning than in almost any other Latin American capital. Venezuela is still a high-risk destination. The country has a new acting government since January 2026, and the earthquakes of 24 June 2026 hit La Guaira and Caracas hard. Come with a local contact if you can, use booked cars door to door, and carry US dollars in small notes.
Legal in one line: Sex between men is legal in Venezuela, and since a Supreme Court (TSJ) ruling of 16 March 2023 it's legal in the military too. The age of consent is 16 for everyone. There is no same-sex marriage and no civil union (the Constitution says "a man and a woman", and a 2015 marriage case is still waiting at the TSJ), trans people can't legally change their name or gender, and gay men can't give blood. The 2012 labour law bans discrimination by sexual orientation at work, but enforcement is weak. An anti-discrimination bill went to the National Assembly in May 2026; it had not passed when we checked.

Travel advice: the US State Department rates Venezuela Level 3, "Reconsider travel" (27 June 2026), citing crime, kidnapping and a health system in crisis. The UK advises against all but essential travel to most of the country. Travelling against this advice can void your insurance.
Politics: US forces captured Nicolás Maduro on 3 January 2026, and Delcy Rodríguez has been acting president since 5 January. No election date had been set by October 2026. Stay away from rallies: foreigners are barred from taking part in internal politics.
The earthquakes: two quakes, of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, struck on 24 June 2026. La Guaira, on the coast, was declared a disaster zone, and Caracas had the most damaged buildings. The death toll ran into the thousands. Some places have closed or changed hours since.
Getting in: Simón Bolívar International Airport at Maiquetía, about 30 km from the centre, reopened on 1 September 2026 from temporary terminals and runs at about 45% of its old capacity (Bloomberg Línea). American, Iberia, Air Europa, Copa, LATAM Colombia and Turkish Airlines fly in, and Qatar Airways is due from 4 November 2026. Book the airport transfer through your hotel and don't accept rides in the arrivals hall.
Help: the US Embassy in Caracas reopened on 30 March 2026 for emergency services to US citizens only.
Sabana Grande: the heart of the scene
Older guides send gay visitors to Altamira, Chacao and Las Mercedes, the leafy, better-off east. We couldn't find an independent source that backs that up today. The gay bars are in Sabana Grande, historically the city's zona de ambiente, in the blocks between the boulevard, Calle Villaflor and Avenida Casanova. By day it's full of shops and street food. At night it empties fast, so go door to door by car and don't walk between venues, even when they look close on the map.
The name you'll hear most. A disco-bar on Calle Villaflor with two rooms (urban Latin music and electronic), lip-sync and drag shows, and a rainbow-draped front. Its Instagram, @lafragatavip, posts regularly and gives opening from 18:00. Reviewers praise the shows and the dancing and complain about door pressure to buy drinks. Google rates it 4.2.
GayCities calls it the oldest queer bar in Caracas. It has two levels, each with a bar and room to dance, on Pasaje Asunción next to Hotel Cristal. Its Instagram, @dosbarrasdisco, gives Tuesday to Sunday from 17:00. The beer is cheap, the crowd is mixed, and rides get scarce after about 22:00, so book your car home before you go in.
A gay men's steam bath in a basement on Calle Villaflor, open by day. Spartacus and QList list it under its registered name, Baños Turcos Suecos. Google reviewers in 2026 praised the large pool. They also said only one steam room was working, some showers had been removed, and entry, charged at the euro rate, felt steep.
Beyond Sabana Grande
Copa's (Copas Disco Club) is a gay disco on Avenida Guaicaipuro in El Rosal, in the Chacao municipality. Chacao's council shut it on its reopening night in April 2023 (El Nacional), but it has been running again since, and its Instagram, @copasdiscoclub, gives Friday and Saturday from 22:00.
Revo Disco Club is a large weekend disco in Los Cortijos de Lourdes, in Sucre municipality, with a rainbow flag in its Instagram bio and a playlist that runs from Latin pop to vallenato. The newest posts we saw were from December 2025, but Google reviews kept coming in through October 2026, so check before you go.
Puma Gym Spa is a men-only sauna near La Candelaria, popular with bears and older men, with lockers, steam rooms and entry at about $10 (2025 reviews). It has no website, so call +58 212 578 0570 first.
Mainstream bars such as Juan Sebastián Bar (jazz, El Rosal) and La Quinta (rock, Las Mercedes) turn up on scraped "gay bar" lists. They're fine for a drink, but they aren't gay venues.
Gone but still Googled
El Maní es Así: the salsa club in Sabana Grande is marked permanently closed on Google, and it was never a gay bar.
Club Room (Las Mercedes), Telo Café (El Recreo), Triskel (La Castellana), Pullman Bar and Holic: listed in old guides, closed or with no trace since the late 2010s.
"Koa", listed on some apps for Calle Villaflor, has no reviews after 2016.
Saunas Yosika and Tecnisaunas appear in "gay sauna" searches but are companies that build saunas.
A real risk in men-only spaces
Being gay isn't a crime, but police use vague public-decency charges (ultraje al pudor). On 23 July 2023 police raided the Avalon spa in Valencia, two hours west, and detained 33 men; charges against 30 of them were later dropped. On 30 May 2026 police raided a gay sauna in Barquisimeto and held about 30 men, and several officers were then arrested for extortion (La Verdad). NGOs count at least eight raids on LGBTIQ+ venues in Venezuela since 2020. We found no named raid on a Caracas sauna. Carry a copy of your passport, stay calm, don't pay anyone off on the spot, and call your embassy if you're detained.
Outdoor cruising has a long history in Caracas's big parks, but given these charges we don't list any spots. Use the apps, meet first in a busy bar, and never invite a stranger back to your hotel after a first chat.
Practical tips
Money: the official currency is the bolívar (883 Bs to the US dollar on 21 October 2026, BCV), but prices are often quoted in dollars. Foreign cards often fail, so bring clean 1, 5 and 10 dollar notes; torn notes get refused and change is scarce.
Getting around: use a car booked through your hotel or a local ride app (Ridery and Yummy are the best known). Never hail a taxi in the street.
Where to stay: the east (Chacao, El Rosal, Las Mercedes, Chuao) is better kept and closer to Copa's; La Candelaria is central and cheaper, but don't walk there at night. See our Caracas hotels.
Power cuts happen, so carry a charged power bank.
Pride and community
The Marcha del Orgullo LGBTIQ+ has been held every year since 2001. In 2025 it was on Saturday 28 June, from Parque Miranda to Plaza Venezuela (El Diario); in 2024 it was on 7 July. We found no news report of a 2026 march after the June earthquakes. QList lists a solidarity "Orgullotón" on Saturday 31 October 2026, collecting food, medicines and toys for earthquake-hit families, but we couldn't confirm its time or route. The 2027 date was not announced at the time of writing. Follow @OrgulloLGBTIVE.
Groups worth knowing: ACCSI (HIV and LGBTI rights, accsi.org), Venezuela Igualitaria (behind the marriage case), the Observatorio Venezolano de Violencias LGBTIQ+, Unión Afirmativa and Divas de Venezuela. For HIV testing and counselling, Acción Solidaria on Avenida Orinoco has worked on HIV since 1995.
A few words
De ambiente: gay, as in bar de ambiente, a gay bar.
Marico: Caracas slang that friends use like "dude", but it can also be a slur, so leave it to the locals.
¿A qué hora cierran?: what time do you close?
¿Me pide un carro, por favor?: could you call me a car, please?

Frequently asked questions
Are there gay bars in Caracas?
Yes, a handful. La Fragata VIP+ and Dos Barras are in Sabana Grande, Copa's is in El Rosal and Revo is in Los Cortijos. All four were active in 2026, but check their Instagram before you go.
The main risk is crime, not homophobia: armed robbery and express kidnapping. Same-sex relations are legal, but police have raided gay saunas elsewhere in Venezuela. Never walk at night, and use booked cars.
Is there a gay sauna in Caracas?
Two: Zeus Steam's House (Baños Turcos Suecos) in Sabana Grande and Puma Gym Spa near La Candelaria. Both are basic, and both are open by day.
Usually late June or early July, from Parque Miranda to Plaza Venezuela. The 2026 march was disrupted by the earthquakes, and no 2027 date had been announced.
Last verified: October 2026.
