Gay Evansville: The Honest 2026 Guide
Last verified: October 2026 · Compiled from venue checks and local and international sources from 2025–2026 · Report a change
Evansville sits in a wide bend of the Ohio River, which is why locals still call it the Crescent City, or simply River City. Kentucky is on the far bank, Illinois a short drive west, and the whole region answers to one name: the Tri-State. Walk Riverside Drive at dusk and you'll see the grey hull of the LST-325, a Second World War landing ship turned museum, moored below the casino lights, with barges sliding past in the current. Every October the West Side smells of elephant ears and corn dogs during the Nut Club's Fall Festival, and the local dish that visitors are always told about is a fried-brain sandwich. The gay scene is small and local: one long-running nightclub on Main Street, a June Pride that has grown into the city's big summer party, and a friendly arts district at Haynie's Corner. Here's what is real in 2026, and what isn't.
Legal in one line: same-sex marriage has been legal in Indiana since 2014, and Evansville and Vanderburgh County have local ordinances covering sexual orientation and gender identity, but Indiana has no statewide LGBTQ+ anti-discrimination law and has tightened rules for trans people in 2025–2026 (see below).
The scene in brief
Evansville is a city of about 116,000, and its LGBTQ+ life is community-based rather than nightlife-heavy. There is one dedicated gay club, Someplace Else, plus a busy June calendar run by River City Pride and friends. Most socialising happens downtown along Main Street and in the Haynie's Corner Arts District, a few blocks south-east, with its galleries, historic houses and First Friday street nights. The nearest bigger scenes are a drive away: Louisville and Nashville are each roughly two to two and a half hours by car, and Indianapolis closer to three, so they work for a weekend rather than a night.

Nightlife
Someplace Else Nightclub · 930 Main St, downtown
The Tri-State's gay institution. Explore Evansville describes it as the region's longest-running alternative nightclub, with weekly karaoke and drag productions; Yellow Pages lists the business as over four decades old. It is a bar downstairs with a second-floor stage for drag shows, a small dance floor and pool tables, and a loyal, mixed local crowd. It also books touring male revues (in June 2025 it hosted shows billed as Magic Hunks and Girls Night Out, both 21+), so some nights you'll share the room with hen parties.
Several directories list it as open Thursday to Sunday, 18:00 to 03:00, closed Monday to Wednesday; other listings give shorter hours, so check its Facebook page (someplaceelse.nightclub) or call +1 812-424-3202 before you go. Bring photo ID: shows there are billed 21+. Reviews are warm about the drag and the sense of family, while a minority complain about drink prices, quieter nights and door staff, so go on a show night if you can. As the only gay club for miles around, it works as a community living room: its mixed local crowd takes in drag fans, students, couples and the odd hen party. Drag starts later in the evening, so arrive after dinner rather than at opening time.
Listed elsewhere, but not found in 2026: the GayOut guide text mentions Bar Twenty-Two and Krave Nightclub as Evansville gay venues; we found no current listing, press coverage or social page placing either in Evansville. Scandals, an "all-inclusive" alternative club that opened with The Pub in May 2015 (reported by 14 News), has no recent coverage. Old directory entries for The Brickhouse (W Illinois St) and Scotties (S Kentucky Ave) also show no sign of recent activity. Treat all of these as closed or unconfirmed unless you see a dated post from them.

River City Pride and the June calendar
River City Pride is the volunteer group behind Evansville's Pride festival, which moved from Haynie's Corner to Main Street in 2023 after outgrowing its old home. River City Pride 2026 was held on Saturday 6 June, from noon to 22:00 on Main Street: a parade to open, then live bands, DJs, drag shows on a stage at Main Street and Riverside Drive, food trucks, more than 80 vendors, sensory spaces and kids' inflatables. WNIN reported that thousands came, in sunny, humid weather. The festival is held on the first Saturday of June, which would put 2027 on 5 June; wait for the organisers to confirm.
Around it, June usually fills up with smaller events. In recent years these have included a Pride First Friday at Haynie's Corner with a free drag show and food trucks, Pride in the Park at Garvin Park (run by the Hudson & Reed Foundation), a Pride night with the Evansville Otters at historic Bosse Field, library events, and a Pride wiffleball tournament at Haynie's Corner. Programmes change each year, so check local listings in May.
For history lovers: local advocate Kelley Coures wrote Out in Evansville: An LGBTQ+ History of River City, and the city appeared in an episode of HBO's drag series We're Here, filmed here in 2021.
Community and health
- River City Pride has run events beyond the festival, such as drag nights, a resource fair and sports tournaments. GayOut lists it at 508 Main St, phone +1 812-434-1988.
- PFLAG Greater Evansville supports LGBTQ+ people and their families.
- Tri-State Alliance is the city's long-standing LGBT rights group; its former president, community leader Wally Paynter, died in 2023. We could not confirm its current activity.
- The University of Southern Indiana lists local LGBTQ+-affirming congregations and HIV-testing services. For free, confidential testing, contact the Vanderburgh County Health Department. If a condom breaks, PEP must start within 72 hours: go to a hospital emergency department.
- Hyatt Place Evansville / Downtown, 202 SE 2nd St: casual rooms and suites, some with river views, a pool and a restaurant. A comfortable walk from Main Street.
- Bally's Evansville Casino & Hotel, 421 NW Riverside Dr: on the river, with valet parking and restaurants on site.
- Coolbreeze Estate B & B, 1240 SE 2nd St: a small bed and breakfast south-east of downtown, for a quieter, more personal stay.
- See all gay-friendly hotels in Evansville. Several budget and extended-stay options sit on the east side near Green River Road, but from there you'll need a car or a ride for a night out.
- Marriage and couples: same-sex marriage has been recognised since October 2014.
- Discrimination: there is no statewide law covering sexual orientation or gender identity. Some protection comes from federal law and from local ordinances, including those of Evansville and Vanderburgh County. Indiana's 2015 religious freedom law was amended so that it does not authorise refusing service on these grounds.
- Hate crimes: a 2019 law lets judges add tougher sentences for bias-motivated crimes, though critics call it vague.
- Trans travellers: gender-affirming care for minors has been banned since 2024. A March 2025 executive order defined sex as sex assigned at birth, and the state stopped amending birth certificates. From February 2026, the BMV stopped allowing gender-marker changes on driving licences. As of spring 2026, no state law restricted restroom use by adults, though bills keep being filed. Downtown Evansville and Haynie's Corner are relaxed, but on long drives through rural southern Indiana and western Kentucky, trans and gender-nonconforming travellers may prefer to keep a lower profile at roadside stops.
- Time zone: Evansville is on Central Time, an hour behind Indianapolis and Louisville. Watch this when booking shows or flights, and when driving in from Indianapolis or Louisville: you gain an hour on the way here and lose it going back.
- Getting there: Evansville Regional Airport (EVV) is on the city's northern edge; Nashville is the nearest large airport.
- Getting around: the city is car-shaped. The Metropolitan Evansville Transit System (METS) runs city buses; at night, use a taxi or a ride-hailing app.
- Across the river: Henderson, Kentucky, is across the Ohio on US-41. Note that the GayOut "Envi Boutique Hotel Henderson – Evansville South" is in Kentucky, not Indiana.

Where to stay
Eat, drink and see
Start on the river: walk the Riverside Drive promenade, past the Four Freedoms Monument, and tour the USS LST-325, moored here since 2005. Head to Haynie's Corner for galleries, boutiques and bars, especially on a First Friday, when the arts district fills with vendors and food trucks. For a drink before Someplace Else, Mo's House on Parrett Street (as listed), in the arts district, is a well-regarded cocktail lounge, with classic cocktails given a twist and a long bourbon and whiskey list. In the morning, Parlor Doughnuts, the layered-doughnut chain that started in Evansville in 2019, has its downtown shop on the corner of Second and Main. Baseball fans can catch the Evansville Otters at Bosse Field, built in 1915 and used for scenes in A League of Their Own.
For a local taste, the West Side's Hilltop Inn is known for its fried-brain sandwich and its burgoo, a thick, smoky stew. In the first full week of October, the West Side Nut Club Fall Festival takes over the streets west of downtown with a huge food fair, from elephant ears and pronto pups to alligator stew and chocolate-covered crickets.

Indiana in 2026: what visitors should know
Cruising and apps: public sex is a criminal offence in Indiana, and Evansville's parks and riverfront are not places to look for it. There is no gay sauna or cruise club in town; Someplace Else and the apps are where people meet. If you use Grindr or similar apps, meet first in a public place, tell a friend where you're going, and be wary of anyone who rushes you to a private address.
Practical tips
A few words to know: the Tri-State, the Indiana-Kentucky-Illinois region around Evansville; Eville or River City, local nicknames for the city; the Lloyd, the Lloyd Expressway, the main road across town; Haynie's, Haynie's Corner, the arts district; Nut Club, the West Side club that runs the Fall Festival; burgoo, a slow-cooked meat and vegetable stew from the Ohio Valley.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a gay bar in Evansville?
Yes, one dedicated gay nightclub: Someplace Else, at 930 Main St downtown. It has been running for decades, hosts drag shows on its upstairs stage, and recent directory listings give it as open Thursday to Sunday from 18:00 until late. Other bars named in older guides could not be confirmed as open in 2026.
When is Evansville Pride?
On the first Saturday of June. River City Pride 2026 took place on Saturday 6 June, from noon to 22:00 on Main Street downtown, opening with a parade and followed by a festival with live music, drag on a stage at Main and Riverside, and more than 80 vendors. Check River City Pride's channels for the 2027 date.
Is Evansville gay-friendly?
Mostly, with some caveats. Evansville is a mid-sized, fairly conservative river city, but it has a long-running gay club, a Pride festival that draws thousands, and local ordinances in Evansville and Vanderburgh County that cover sexual orientation and gender identity. Downtown and Haynie's Corner are the most relaxed areas.
What are the LGBTQ+ laws in Indiana in 2026?
Same-sex marriage has been legal in Indiana since 2014, and a 2019 law lets judges impose tougher sentences for crimes motivated by bias. There is no statewide anti-discrimination law covering sexual orientation or gender identity, and the state has restricted trans rights: a ban on gender-affirming care for minors, a 2025 executive order on birth certificates and, from February 2026, no gender-marker changes on driving licences.
Where should I stay in Evansville?
Downtown, so you can walk to Main Street and the riverfront. Hyatt Place Evansville Downtown on SE Second Street is a reliable mid-range option, Bally's Evansville sits on the riverfront, and Coolbreeze Estate B&B on SE Second Street offers a smaller, more personal stay. Use a taxi or ride-hailing app late at night.
