The honest summary: DC has about two dozen LGBTQ+ bars, more than most US cities its size, but they're spread over four neighbourhoods rather than one strip. Since 2023 the busiest corner has been 14th and U, where Washingtonian counted six LGBTQ+ bars in early 2026. Dupont Circle still has its old-guard bars, Adams Morgan has the sports bar, the lesbian bar and a QTBIPOC dance space, and a couple of good queer spots sit out on Capitol Hill and in NoMa.

This list was checked in October 2026 against the Washington Blade's queer bar guide, Metro Weekly's weekly nightlife listings, Out x Out's June 2026 guide and the bars' own sites. Instagram is where most of them post their weekly schedules.

    • Red Bear Brewing Co: 209 M St NE. A gay-owned brewery and taproom, open since 2019.

    Gone but still Googled

Shakers (closed November 2025), The Dirty Goose (September 2024), the old DC Eagle (2020), Ziegfeld's/Secrets (2020), Cobalt (2019) and Town (2018) are all closed, even though some older guides still list them. Freddie's Beach Bar is open, but it's across the river in Arlington, Virginia, not in DC.

    Practical notes

    • DC bars can stay open later on Friday and Saturday nights than during the week. Check each bar's hours, because many of the smaller ones close well before the legal limit on weeknights.
    • Metro shuts before the bars do, so plan a rideshare home. U Street/Cardozo and Dupont Circle are the stations for most of these bars.
    • Expect covers at the dance bars on weekends and on party nights. The neighbourhood bars are usually free.
    • Busy weekends are Capital Pride in June, Black Pride over Memorial Day weekend and Mid-Atlantic Leather in January.
